The formation of biominerals by living organisms is governed by the cooperation of soluble and insoluble macromolecules with peculiar interfacial properties. Controllable Nonspecific Protein Adsorption by Charged Hyperbranched Polyglycerol Thin Films

Antifouling thin films derived from charged hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) layers were fabricated and evaluated. The anionic hbPG (a-hbPG) monolayers and cationic hbPG/anionic hbPG (c/a-hbPG) bilayers were adsorbed on the underlying self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of cysteamine and 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) by electrostatic interaction, respectively, and their procession was monitored by surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (SPR). Modeling of anisotropic grain growth in minerals

The role of surface energy anisotropy during grain growth is investigated using both physical experiments on octachloropropane and numerical experiments using the Elle microstructural modelling system. In particular the effects of anisotropy on growth rates, grain shapes and lattice preferred orientations are analysed. Anisotropic growth in thin polycrystalline sheets of octachloropropane is found to systematically remove certain c-axis orientations from the sample, without obviously modifying the grain shapes. Group analysis and similarity solutions of the compressible boundary layer equations

In this paper the application of Lie's methods to the equations of the laminar boundary layer is discussed. The momentum and energy equations in Prandtl's form are considered for a steady, viscous, compressible laminar flow with non zero pressure gradient, variable viscosity and thermal conductivity. Group analysis yields similarity solutions for given pressure distributions and particular values of the invariance group parameters (group classification). Crocco's transformation is obtained for the infinite-dimensional group of the Lie's algebra admitted by the equations.

Head-group variations and monolayer structures of diol derivatives

Monolayers of 5 chemically modified diols varying the headgroup (nonadecane-1,2-diol (C1), hexadecyl-propane-1,3-diol (C2), hexadecyl-oxy-propane-1,2-diol (C3), hexadecyl-oxy-butane-1,2-diol (C4), hexadecanoyl-oxy-propane-1,2-diol (C5)) have been investigated by grazing incidence x-ray diffraction at 20°C and at different lateral pressures. C1 and C5 exhibit a centred-rectangular lattice with NN (nearest neighbour) tilt and NN distortion directions. In the case of C1 on increasing the lateral pressure the distortion changes to NNN (next-nearest neighbour direction) without a change in tilt direction (NN). Adhesively bonded multi-layer structures are frequently used, mostly in the aerospace industry, for their structural efficiency. Nondestructive evaluation of bond integrity in these types of structures, both after manufacturing and for periodic inspection during service, is extremely important. Somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration from pistil transverse thin cell layers of lemon (Citrus limon)

Callus induction, somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration were obtained in Citrus limon (L.) Burm. (cv. Femminello) from cultures of pistil transverse thin cell layer explants [(t)TCLs]. Explants were cultured on two different media, based on Murashige and Skoog salts and vitamins, supplemented with 500 mg l-1 malt extract (MSI), or 500 mg l-1 malt extract and 13.3 ¼M 6-benzylaminopurine (MSII). HPTLC Phenolic Profiles as Useful Tools for the Authentication of Honey

The present study reveals the utility of high-performance thin-layer chromatographic (HPTLC) fingerprinting of phenolic constituents for the authentication of monofloral honeys. The obtained data enables a more complete assessment of honey quality and the identification of emerging threats to honey quality. The developed procedure facilitates differentiation of varietal honeys and detection of honey adulterations.
