A decade of research into player communities in online games
2013
The social dynamics of player communities in online games have been the subject of much research during the last decade. Following a systematic review of empirical research publications from 2000–2010, this article synthesizes the key methods and concepts researchers have used to study and characterize player communities. It also synthesizes the key aspects and operationalizations researchers have concentrated on. The analysis shows that qualitative approaches have been more common than quantitative ones. The concepts used to characterize player communities were often not clearly defined or overlapped in meaning. Yet they revealed a prevalence of micro (groups or teams), meso (guilds or org…
Atomic layer deposition of lithium containing thin films
2009
Five different lithium containing compounds, all representing different chemical systems, were studied in order to deposit lithium containing films by atomic layer deposition ALD. The studied compounds were a lithium β-diketonate Li(thd) (thd = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate), a lithium alkoxide LiOtBu (OtBu = tert-butoxide), a lithium cyclopentadienyl LiCp (Cp = cyclopentadienyl), a lithium alkyl n-butyllithium, and a lithium amide lithium dicyclohexylamide. Films containing lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) were obtained from alternate pulsing of Li(thd) and ozone in a temperature range of 185–300 °C. The film composition was analyzed by time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis (…
Structure and electronic properties of ultrathin Co films on W(110)
2004
Abstract The structure and electronic properties of ultrathin Co films on W(1 1 0) grown by molecular beam epitaxy in UHV were investigated by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS). For coverages above 0.7 ML the pseudomorphic (ps) monolayer is transformed gradually into close-packed (cp-) monolayer areas, showing up as separated islands that increase in size with coverage until the cp-monolayer is complete. Two different structures of the cp-monolayer were observed by atomically resolved STM, both leading to a 8 × 1 superstructure in the LEED pattern. Higher coverages continue to grow in the Stransky–Krastanov growth mode fo…
MITC FINITE ELEMENTS FOR MAGNETO-ELECTRO-ELASTIC PLATES BASED ON EQUIVALENT SINGLE-LAYER THEORY
2013
Finite elements for magneto-electro-elastic laminated plates are formulated. They are based on an equivalent single-layer model, which assumes the first order shear deformation theory and quasi-static behavior for the electric and magnetic fields. To infer the plate model, the electro-magnetic state is firstly determined and condensed to the the mechanical primary variables, namely the generalized displacements. In turn, this result is used into the layers constitutive law to obtain the equivalent single-layer laminate constitutive relationship that expresses the plate mechanical stress resultants in terms of the generalized displacements taking the magneto-electro-elastic couplings into ac…
Scrutiny of the Failure of Lipid Membranes As A Function of Headgroups, Chain Length, and Lamellarity Measured by Scanning Force Microscopy
2004
AbstractA fast, quantitative, and unambiguous screening of material properties of biomembranes using scanning force microscopy in pulsed force mode on lipid membranes is presented. The spatially resolved study of breakthrough force, breakthrough distance, adhesion, stiffness, and topography of lipid membranes as determined simultaneously by digitalized pulsed force mode provides new insight into the structure-function relationship of model membranes, which are systematically analyzed by varying chain length, lipid headgroup, and lamellarity. For this purpose, a novel unbiased analysis method is presented. A strong correlation between adhesion and breakthrough events is found on lipid bilaye…
Partitioning of Pyrene-Labeled Phospho- and Sphingolipids between Ordered and Disordered Bilayer Domains
2004
AbstractHere we have studied how the length of the pyrene-labeled acyl chain (n) of a phosphatidylcholine, sphingomyelin, or galactosylceramide affects the partitioning of these lipids between 1), gel and fluid domains coexisting in bovine brain sphingomyelin (BB-SM) or BB-SM/spin-labeled phosphatidylcholine (PC) bilayers or 2), between liquid-disordered and liquid-ordered domains in BB-SM/spin-labeled PC/cholesterol bilayers. The partitioning behavior was deduced either from modeling of pyrene excimer/monomer ratio versus temperature plots, or from quenching of the pyrene monomer fluorescence by spin-labeled PC. New methods were developed to model excimer formation and pyrene lipid quenchi…
Mean-field theory for superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene
2018
Recent experiments show how a bilayer graphene twisted around a certain magic angle becomes superconducting as it is doped into a region with approximate flat bands. We investigate the mean-field $s$-wave superconducting state in such a system and show how the state evolves as the twist angle is tuned, and as a function of the doping level. We argue that part of the experimental findings could well be understood to result from an attractive electron--electron interaction mediated by electron--phonon coupling, but the flat-band nature of the excitation spectrum makes also superconductivity quite unusual. For example, as the flat-band states are highly localized around certain spots in the st…
Monolayer-to-mesoscale modulation of the optical properties in 2D CrI3 mapped by hyperspectral microscopy
2023
Magnetic 2D materials hold promise to change the miniaturization paradigm of unidirectional photonic components. However, the integration of these materials in devices hinges on the accurate determination of the optical properties down to the monolayer limit, which is still missing. By using hyperspectral wide-field imaging at room temperature, we reveal a nonmonotonic thickness dependence of the complex optical dielectric function in the archetypal magnetic 2D material CrI3 extending across different length scales: onsetting at the mesoscale, peaking at the nanoscale, and decreasing again down to the single layer. These results portray a modification of the electronic properties of the mat…
