Designing a graphics processing unit accelerated petaflop capable lattice Boltzmann solver: Read aligned data layouts and asynchronous communication

2017

The lattice Boltzmann method is a well-established numerical approach for complex fluid flow simulations. Recently, general-purpose graphics processing units (GPUs) have become available as high-performance computing resources at large scale. We report on designing and implementing a lattice Boltzmann solver for multi-GPU systems that achieves 1.79 PFLOPS performance on 16,384 GPUs. To achieve this performance, we introduce a GPU compatible version of the so-called bundle data layout and eliminate the halo sites in order to improve data access alignment. Furthermore, we make use of the possibility to overlap data transfer between the host central processing unit and the device GPU with comp…

A fuzzy parameter to characterize the uncertainty in the plant layout design

2015

The present work aims at proposing a methodology able to return a single parameter that synthesizes the aspects characterizing the layout design problem that the analyst translates into requests of closeness and distance among departments. In order to consider the uncertainty of the problem, closeness and distance requests are expressed by means of fuzzy numbers and a weight fuzzy function modules the importance of the aspects by allowing the analyst to express his/her priorities on the basis of the specific decisional context. The weight function is characterized by the presence of a threshold value that makes the method non compensative. The hypothesis herein assumed is that, when the dis…

An international review on one and two level innovative unconventional intersection and interchange.

2013

The research on road intersection and interchange has recently allowed to design innovative one and two level unconventional layouts (UIIDs) which are of undoubted interest, especially in terms of traffic functionality and safety. The main objective of the paper is to discuss the geometric layouts, the principal advantages and the disadvantages, in terms of cost, safety, performances of the most interesting UIIDs, like two-level signalized intersection (TLSI), single-point urban interchanges (SPUI), center-turn overpass (CTO), echelon interchange (EI), Crossover Diamond interchanges (DCD), Upstream Signalized Crossover Intersection (USC), Median U-turn Intersection (MUT), “Target”, “Flower”…

The impact of store atmospherics and store layout on customer behavior in a hardware store retail setting : case: do-it-yourself store

2015

Comprehensive apprehension of retail establishment’s atmosphere’s effects on its cus-tomers’ overall perceptions of the store and thus purchasing behavior is an essential goal for any retailer, yet the previous marketing literature has converged on understanding the shopping environments of mostly malls, grocery stores, furniture stores and clothing stores. A window was left open for construing a wholly different shopping environment; DIY (do-it-yourself)/ hardware/ home improvement store. Shopping environment studies rely largely on environmental psychology theories in their attempts of deciphering the effects of environment on individuals. This study is fundamentally similar in nature, by…
