Strengthening Institutional Isomorphism in Development NGOs? Program Mechanisms in an Organizational Intervention
2017
Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in international development struggle between being actors in the mainstream or representatives of alternatives to it. However, many NGOs all over the world align with the mainstream and are increasingly similar to each other. This homogenization results from institutional isomorphism, which is affected by their aspirations to be legitimate vis-á-vis the international field. Consultancies are among the main practices to promote normative isomorphism, but little is known about their micro-level dynamics. Drawing on the notion of program mechanisms in realistic evaluation, we scrutinize how external facilitators in organizational development processes enab…
Il sistema di copertura del Teatro Politeama di Palermo
2012
In the project of the Politeama’s Theater in Palermo, the Architect Almeyda summarizes, in an expressive and model balance, the technological component and geometrical/spatial shape, providing optimal solutions to a structural and functional problems. Thanks to its typological approach, thanks to its technological aspects and, specifically, thanks to its size and its style, the work offers us some interesting reflections about the technical choices carried out for the construction. The Author, basing on some original Almeyda’s drawings, deepens the geometric and compositional system of the roof. The daring and complex construction carried out in iron and glass, modern and progressive in for…
“Terve uni on kasvatuksella hankittavissa”. Nukkumisen ohjeistaminen 1800-1900-luvun vaihteen suomalaisissa terveysohjeissa
2017
The museum setup in the benedictine dormitory of monreale: The artworks of Santa Maria Del Bosco and the textile artefacts of the Cathedral, Sicily, …
2018
The recent decision to convert the Benedictine Dormitory in Monreale into an exhibition site offers the opportunity to enjoy the whole monumental complex where the wonderful cloister is the core attraction. It is on this site that the Norman Cathedral stands, brightly decorated with golden mosaics. The new exhibition has gathered together the artworks from the ruined abbey of Santa Maria del Bosco in Calatamauro and added them to the artefacts already exhibited at the Diocesan Museum. They include marble gravestones from the 16th-17th century church and those dating to the 18th century; one stone is in polychrome marble of the family of the canons, Candes and Donato; another was used for th…
GLOBAL ISSUES, WESTERN FOCI: BANAL OCCIDENTALISM IN A FINNISH NEWSPAPER
2016
‘The West’ is an imagined community par excellence with a plethora of connotations that often contradict each other. Although it is often not at all certain exactly what the West or things Western refer to, the concepts are used as if there was some distinct cultural reality corresponding to them. Like any other ethnic group, tribe, nation state, or even village, the West is both fantasy and real, a social construction and, to some extent, an observable social formation. The Western world exists because people believe in its unity and share the connotations but also for a more mundane—or banal— reason: because these are constantly expressed in text and speech. This article examines the news…

L'écart et l'entre-deux : traduire la culture
2011
Comparative linguistics seems to suggest that the gap between two languages can be filled by grammar. But mapping the structural gaps between languages hardly makes for the more fundamental gap that is created by the writing of a new text, a supposedly identical addendum to the first. Writing that new text entails questions about the nature of texts, their intentions, their interpretations. Translation must therefore develop a hermeneutical approach. This critical stance is about sorting out what belongs to the languages and what belongs to the text as a specific unit, as a cultural and authorial unit. Because of its cultural nature, translation questions the way one can carry meaning acros…
STUDIES AND RESEARCHES CONCERNING THE POSSIBILITY OF USING HYDROGEN IN TURBO ENGINES
2014
The paper aims to study the main aspects related to using Hydrogen as fuel in thermal engines, the advantages and disadvantages of using it as fuel and the technical posibilities of adjusting it, Hydrogen used as supplement at the main fuel and Hydrogen used as working fluid. As a perspective, it can be considered using Hydrogen as thermical agent in a closed energetic flux with thermo- chemical compression of Hydrogen in a hybrid heat changer, based on the heat of burning products of thermical engines. The experiments made showed that using such a way of using the heat of burning products of turbo engines can assure the increase of power and efficiency of the whole instalation with 20 %, w…

Hermetic Roots of Marsilio Ficino’s Anthropocentric Thought
2013
Marsilio Ficino’s relationship to the Hermetic literary tradition has long been a controversial issue in academic discussion. Although Ficino is commonly known as a translator and keen reader of the philosophical Hermetica, his allegiances to the Hermetic ideas have been recognized only in his theory of magic (only to be denied later), while in other cases, in general, scholars tend to deny the impact of Hermetic writings instead of accepting it. This paper explores a topic in which the denial has been particularly harsh, namely Ficino’s Promethean philosophy of man, highlighted as the most influential achievement of his thought by previous generations (e.g. by Trinkaus). Despite the neglec…
