Veronico beccabungae-callitrichetum stagnalis (Oberd. 1957) Müller 1962, a plant association new to Poland - Quality of habitat
2011
The paper presents a community of water plants that is new to Poland, <em>Veronico beccabungae-Callitrichetum</em> stagnalis (Oberd. 1957) Müller 1962. This community belongs to the class <em>Potametea</em>. It was discovered in the village of Odrowąż near the town of Krapkowice in Silesia (SW Poland). <em>Veronico beccabungae-Callitrichetum stagnalis</em> in Poland occurs within an irregularly shaped shallow underwater spring, located in the distal part of the Oder River’s flood terrace. This plant community covered 0.2 ha in 2008. <em>Callitriche stagnalis</em> predominated in this community. Species such as <em>Callitriche hamulata<…
Advanced earth observation approach for multiscale forest ecosystem services modeling and mapping (MIMOSE)
2014
In the last decade ecosystem services (ES) have been proposed as a method for quantifying the multifunctional role of forest ecosystems. Their spatial distribution on large areas is frequently limited by the lack of information, because field data collection with traditional methods requires much effort in terms of time and cost. In this contribution we propose a methodology (namely, MultIscale Mapping Of ecoSystem servicEs - MIMOSE) based on the integration of remotely sensed images and field observation to produce a wall-to-wall geodatabase of forest parcels accompanied with several information useful as a basis for future trade-off analysis of different ES. Here, we present the applicat…
<i>Acacia cyclops</i> A. Cunn. ex G. Don (Leguminosae) in Italy: first cases of naturalization
2012
The first two cases of naturalization of <i>Acacia cyclops</i> are reported for Italy. Young trees were observed growing in the wild some 15 years ago on Linosa (Pelagie Islands, Strait of Sicily). A decade later, this alien plant should no longer be considered as a casual, since a very intensive process of self-sown regeneration has been observed in some plantations on Lampedusa, the major island of the same Archipelago. The available literature suggests the need for careful monitoring of the ongoing invasion process, as <i>A. cyclops</i> has already shown a very invasive behaviour elsewhere within Mediterranean-type biomes due to its ability to withstand high envir…
Rare and threatened pondweed communities in anthropogenic water bodies of Opole Silesia (SW Poland)
2011
The paper presents results of geobotanic studies conducted in anthropogenic water bodies like excavation ponds, fish culture ponds, other ponds, dam reservoirs, ditches, channels and recreational pools incl. watering places in Opole Silesia and surroundings in the years 2002-2005. The research focused on occurrence of threatened and rare pondweed communities. As the result of the investigations of several dozen of water bodies, 28 localities of rare pondweed communities were documented by 75 phytosociological relevés. Associations of <em>Potametum trichoidis</em> J. et R Tx. in R. Tx. 1965, <em>Potametum praelongi</em> Sauer 1937, <em>P. alpini</em> Br.-B…
Summer pruning in table grape
2013
This paper reviews cultural practices to improve fruit quality in table grape during vegetative and reproductive seasons. Summer pruning in table grape (Vitis vinifera L.) has more effects than winter pruning, above all with regard to plant productivity and final number of bunches for harvesting. Thinning is one of the most cultural technique and it consists in the elimination of vegetative or reproductive organs in excess. Other summer canopy management techniques include leaf removal, fruit shoots positioning, shoot trimming and girdling.
A casual alien plant new to Mediterranean Europe: Ceiba speciosa (Malvaceae) in the suburban area of Palermo (NW Sicily, Italy)
2014
The abiotic and biotic characteristics of the first sites where floss silk tree behaves as a casual alien plant in the Mediterranean Europe are described. The species was probably first planted in botanical gardens of southern France few decades before mid XIX century. It was introduced in Palermo in 1896, a city which appears to match very well its climatic requirements. According to the available information on its biology and ecology in both its original and secondary range, the floss silk tree should not become an invasive alien plant in the Mediterranean. Nevertheless, several gaps need to be filled in order to increase our understanding of future trends of Ceiba speciosa in southern E…
Novedades sobre taxonomía y nomenclatura de híbridos vasculares españoles
1990
The nomenclature of some Iberian hybrids is revised and several new combinations are proposed: <i>Centaurea X subdecurrens</i> var. segobricensis, C.</i> X <i>subdecurrens</i> notbosubsp. <i>albuferae, Cistus</i> X <i>hybridus</i> nothosubsp. <i>grandiflorus</i> var. <i>secallianus. C.</i> X <i>ledon</i> var. <i>recognitus, C. </i>X <i>nigricans</i> var. <i>longifolius, C.</i> X <i>nigricans</i> nothosubsp. <i>grosii</i> and <i>Onopordum</i> X <i>humile</i> var. <i>turolensis</i>. Besides, a new nothosubspec…
A real-time PCR quantitative detection assay for Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. nerii in Nerium oleander
2008
A real-time PCR assay based on TaqMan chemistry was developed for the detection of Pseudomonas savastanoi pathovars that cause bacterial knot disease on different plant species. Primers and probe sequences were based on the iaaL gene coding for (indole-3-acetyl)-L-lysine synthetase and previously used in conventional PCR tests. Assay specificity was tested with an extended range of strains of P. savastanoi from eight hosts, with 13 other Pseudomonas spp., and with other microorganisms naturally occurring on or in oleander plants. A pure culture cell suspension was quantifi ed over a seven log concentration range (108 to 102 cfu ml-1 ). Different protocols were developed for the detection an…
