DETERMINATION OF THE IMPACTS OF LAND USE CHANGE ON WATER BASIN USING REMOTE SENSING AND GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM

2016

The population has been increasing as a result of mass immigration in Istanbul. An urbanization process continues and it causes serious increases in urban areas while decreasing the amount of natural environment. This uncontrolled and illegal urbanization accompanied by insufficient infrastructure has caused degradation of cropland and forested areas in the metropolitan area, especially in water basin area. The watershed basins inside the metropolitan area have accelerated the land-cover changes, which have negative impacts on water quality of the basins. The Terkos water basin, one of the seven water basins of Istanbul providing drinking water, was selected as a study area. In order to und…

Green Synthesis, Molecular Characterization and Associative Behavior of Some Gemini Surfactants without a Spacer Group.

2013

A series of new gemini surfactants without a spacer group, disodium 2,3-dialkyl-1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylates, were synthesized in a green chemistry context minimizing the use of organic solvents and applying microwaves (MW) when activation energy was required. Once the desired architecture was confirmed by means of the nuclear magnetic resonance technique (1H-NMR, 1H-1H COSY) for all the studied surfactants, the critical micellization concentration was determined by conductance measurements. The diffusion coefficient of micelles formed by the four compounds was characterized using pulsed field gradient (PFG)-NMR. Diffusion coefficients were found to be dependent on the concentration and …

Optimized Handover Algorithm Based on Stackelberg Games in CBTC Systems for Urban Rail Transit

2014

Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) systems have become indispensable for train operation to improve the safety and efficiency of train running to the utmost extent at present. In this paper, the problem of train handover in wireless LAN of CBTC systems for urban rail transit was taken into consideration, which was formulated as a market competition with Stackelberg games and cooperative diversity to obtain the reasonable resource allocation for trains. Under the environment of continuous train-to-wayside communications with high reliability, the successful train handover probability was analyzed in detail. Firstly, the relay triggering during handover was introduced, and the price st…

Deep and Meaningful E-Learning with Social Virtual Reality Environments in Higher Education: A Systematic Literature Review

2021

Deep and meaningful learning (DML) in distant education should be an essential outcome of quality education. In this literature review, we focus on e-learning effectiveness along with the factors and conditions leading to DML when using social virtual reality environments (SVREs) in distance mode higher education (HE). Hence, a systematic literature review was conducted summarizing the findings from thirty-three empirical studies in HE between 2004 (appearance of VR) and 2019 (before coronavirus appearance). We searched for the cognitive, social, and affective aspects of DML in a research framework and studied their weight in SVREs. The findings suggest that the use of SVREs can provide aut…

Evolutionary Design Optimization of an Alkaline Water Electrolysis Cell for Hydrogen Production

2020

Hydrogen is an excellent energy source for long-term storage and free of greenhouse gases. However, its high production cost remains an obstacle to its advancement. The two main parameters contributing to the high cost include the cost of electricity and the cost of initial financial investment. It is possible to reduce the latter by the optimization of system design and operation conditions, allowing the reduction of the cell voltage. Because the CAPEX (initial cost divided by total hydrogen production of the electrolyzer) decreases according to current density but the OPEX (operating cost depending on the cell voltage) increases depending on the current density, there exists an optimal cu…

A conceptual dynamic vegetation-soil model for arid and semiarid zones

2007

Plant ecosystems in arid and semiarid zones show high complexity from the point of view of water resources, since they depend on water availability to carry out their vital processes. In these climates, water stress is the main factor controlling vegetation development. The available water in the system results from a water balance where the soil, vegetation and the atmosphere are the key issues; but it is the vegetation which modulates (to a great extent) the total balance of water and the mechanisms of the feedback between soil and atmosphere, being the knowledge about soil moisture quite relevant for assessing available water and, as a consequence, for growth and plants maintenance and t…
