Historical mining and smelting in the Vosges Mountains (France) recorded in two ombrotrophic peat bogs
2010
Two peat sequences were sampled in the vicinity of the main mining districts of the Vosges Mountains: Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines and Plancher-les-Mines. Lead isotopic compositions and excess lead fluxes were calculated for each of these radiocarbon-dated sequences. Geochemical records are in very good agreement with the mining history of the area, well known over the last millennium. Except for an anomaly corresponding to the Middle Bronze Age which has not yet been resolved, there is no clear geochemical evidence of local metal production in the Vosges before the 10th century as excess lead deposition archived between 500 BC and 500 AD is attributed to long-range transport of polluted particul…
Prenatal co-exposure to neurotoxic metals and neurodevelopment in preschool children: The Environment and Childhood (INMA) Project
2018
We sought to determine whether prenatal co-exposure to As, Cd, Hg, Mn, and Pb was associated with impaired neurodevelopment in preschool children from the Spanish Environment and Childhood (INMA) Project, using the placenta as exposure matrix. We measured metal levels in placenta tissue samples randomly selected from five of the seven population-based birth cohorts participating in the INMA Project, collected between 2000 and 2008. Neuropsychological assessment of cognitive and motor function was carried through the use of the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities (MSCA) at the age of 4-5years. Data on placental metal levels, MSCA scores, and relevant covariates was available for 302 chil…
Subjective Assessment of Head and Facial Appearance in Children with Craniosynostoses after Surgical Treatment
2018
Background: Craniosynostoses are congenital defects in the construction of the skull involving premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures. Premature fusion of sutures causes characteristic skull deformation(s). This affect the structure and thus the appearance of the entire head and face. The aim of this study was to analyze parents&rsquo
Transfusion‐transmitted malaria of plasmodium malariae in palermo, sicily
2021
Transfusion-transmitted malaria (TTM) is a rare occurrence with serious consequences for the recipient. In non-endemic areas, the incidence of transmission of malaria by transfusion is very low. We report a clinical case of transfusion-transmitted malaria due to Plasmodium malariae, which happened in a patient with acute hemorrhagic gastropathy. Case presentation: In April 2019, a 70-year-old Italian man with recurrent spiking fever for four days was diagnosed with a P. malariae infection, as confirmed using microscopy and real-time PCR. The patient had never been abroad, but about two months before, he had received a red blood cell transfusion for anemia. Regarding the donor, we revealed t…
Phenothiazine: the seven lives of pharmacology's first lead structure.
2011
Rooted in the early days of organic dye chemistry, the phenothiazine structure and its derivatives have since held a prominent place in pharmacology and biomedicine. Initially used for histochemical stains of plasmodia by Paul Ehrlich, anthelmintic and antibiotic properties of phenothiazines were globally exploited in the 1930s and 1940s. Clinical use of N-substituted phenothiazines as antihistaminics (1940s), sedatives and antipsychotics (1950s) followed and continues to this day. Recently, interest in these structures has re-emerged for a variety of fascinating features in relation to neurodegenerative disease, spearheaded by the unique redox chemistry of phenothiazine--arguably the most …
Fragment- and negative image-based screening of phosphodiesterase 10A inhibitors.
2019
A novel virtual screening methodology called fragment- and negative image-based (F-NiB) screening is introduced and tested experimentally using phosphodiesterase 10A (PDE10A) as a case study. Potent PDE10A-specific small-molecule inhibitors are actively sought after for their antipsychotic and neuroprotective effects. The F-NiB combines features from both fragment-based drug discovery and negative image-based (NIB) screening methodologies to facilitate rational drug discovery. The selected structural parts of protein-bound ligand(s) are seamlessly combined with the negative image of the target's ligand-binding cavity. This cavity- and fragment-based hybrid model, namely its shape and electr…
Antiasthmatic acetophenones - an in vivo study on structure activity relationship.
1994
The recently isolated acetophenone glucoside androsin, as the major antiasthmatic principle of Picrorhiza kurroa Royle ex Benth. (Scrophulariaceae), was used as a lead compound for detailed structure-activity relationship studies. More than 25 synthesized or commercially available acetophenones with modified substitution patterns were screened in the Plethysmographic guinea pig model using PAF and/or ovalbumin as challenging agents for the generation of bronchial constriction. Whereas the aglycones in most cases were more effective than the corresponding glycosides, substitution patterns in position 3 and 4 of the phenyl ring and the keto function attached to the phenyl ring were found to b…
Dielectric Properties of PbSc1/2Nb1/2O3-PbTiO3Ceramics
2004
Lead titanate solid solutions exhibits extreme values of some physical parameters. We have investigated a ferroelectric relaxor ceramics of PSN-PT composition near the morphotropic phase boundary. Results are discussed with account for the relaxor properties related to defects and disordering of the PSN-PT system.
Low and Infra-Low Frequency Measurements in Lead Titanate Solid Solutions
2006
The study of PSN-PT ferroelectric relaxor ceramics exhibiting extreme values of some physical parameters near the morphotropic phase boundary is reported. The results are discussed to account for the relaxor properties related to defects and disordering of the PSN-PT system.
