Building on Entrepreneurs’ Leadership through ‘Lean’ and Dynamic Performance Management Systems in Small and Micro Firms. Challenges and Missed Oppor…

2014

This paper frames the potential benefits of ‘lean’ and dynamic performance management (PM) systems for small and micro enterprises. In this context, the ‘lean’ attribute is used to characterize a different approach in applying PM to small firms, in respect to larger organizations. In fact, such systems may exploit the entrepreneur’s tacit knowledge and build on leadership, by incorporating individual attributes into organizational routines. Related to small and micro firms, direct experience and case-studies suggest that their sudden crises and demises are often a product of gradual – internal and external – phenomena that entrepreneurs are not enabled to selectively and promptly detect and…

Commissioning of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer with cosmic rays

2010

The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider has collected several hundred million cosmic ray events during 2008 and 2009. These data were used to commission the Muon Spectrometer and to study the performance of the trigger and tracking chambers, their alignment, the detector control system, the data acquisition and the analysis programs. We present the performance in the relevant parameters that determine the quality of the muon measurement. We discuss the single element efficiency, resolution and noise rates, the calibration method of the detector response and of the alignment system, the track reconstruction efficiency and the momentum measurement. The results show that the detector i…

Improved tau polarisation measurement

1996

Using 22 pb−1 of data collected at LEP in 1992 on the peak of the Z resonance, the ALEPH collaboration has measured the polarisation of the tau leptons decaying into $$ev\bar v, \mu v\bar v$$ ,πν, ρν and a1 ν from their individual decay product distributions. The measurement of the tau polarisation as a function of the production polar angle yields the two parametersN τ andN e, where, in terms of the axial and vector couplingsg Al andg Vl,N l=2g Vl gAl/(g Vl 2 +g 2 ). This analysis follows to a large extent the methods devised for the 1990 and 1991 data but with improvements which bring a better understanding of the systematic uncertainties. Combining the 1992 measurements with our previous…

Induction of apoptosis in a leukemia cell line by triterpene saponins from Albizia adianthifolia

2004

Abstract Triterpenoid saponins, which are present in plants and some marine animals, exert various important pharmacological effects. The present study examines the effects of adianthifoliosides A, B, and D (AdA, AdB, and AdD) together with two prosapogenins (Pro1 and Pro2) obtained from Albizia adianthifolia (Mimosaceae) on human leukemia T-cells (Jurkat cells) and on splenocytes. AdA, AdB, and AdD were found to exhibit a cytotoxic effect on Jurkat cells, whereas the prosapogenins were found to exert a lymphoproliferative effect on this cell type. Furthermore, all tested compounds were found to exert a synergistic lymphoproliferative activity with concanavalin A (ConA) on splenocytes. The …

In-beam spectroscopic study of Cf244

2018

The ground-state rotational band of the neutron-deficient californium (Z = 98) isotope 244Cf was identified for the first time and measured up to a tentative spin and parity of I I-pi = 20(+). The observation of the rotational band indicates that the nucleus is deformed. The kinematic and dynamic moments of inertia were deduced from the measured gamma-ray transition energies. The behavior of the dynamic moment of inertia revealed an up-bend due to a possible alignment of coupled nucleons in high-j orbitals starting at a rotational frequency of about (h) over bar (omega) = 0.20 MeV. The results were compared with the systematic behavior of the even-even N = 146 isotones as well as with avail…

Alternative approach to populate and study the $^{229}Th$ nuclear clock isomer

2019

A new approach to observe the radiative decay of the $^{229}$Th nuclear isomer, and to determine its energy and radiative lifetime, is presented. Situated at a uniquely low excitation energy, this nuclear state might be a key ingredient for the development of a nuclear clock, a nuclear laser and the search for time variations of the fundamental constants. The isomer's $\gamma$ decay towards the ground state will be studied with a high-resolution VUV spectrometer after its production by the $\beta$ decay of $^{229}$Ac. The novel production method presents a number of advantages asserting its competitive nature with respect to the commonly used $^{233}$U $\alpha$-decay recoil source. In this …

Subsistence strategies throughout the African Middle Pleistocene: Faunal evidence for behavioral change and continuity across the Earlier to Middle S…

2018

Abstract The African Middle Pleistocene (781–126 ka) is a key period for human evolution, witnessing both the origin of the modern human lineage and the lithic turnover from Earlier Stone Age (ESA) Acheulean bifacial tools to Middle Stone Age (MSA) prepared core and point technologies. This ESA/MSA transition is interpreted as representing changing landscape use with greater foraging distances and more active hunting strategies. So far, these behavioral inferences are mainly based on the extensive stone tool record, with only a minor role for site-based and regional faunal studies. To provide additional insights into these behavioral changes, this paper details a pan-African metastudy of 63…

Divertor of the European DEMO: Engineering and technologies for power exhaust

2022

International audience; In a power plant scale fusion reactor, a huge amount of thermal power produced by the fusion reaction and external heating must be exhausted through the narrow area of the divertor targets. The targets must withstand the intense bombardment of the diverted particles where high heat fluxes are generated and erosion takes place on the surface. A considerable amount of volumetric nuclear heating power must also be exhausted. To cope with such an unprecedented power exhaust challenge, a highly efficient cooling capacity is required. Furthermore, the divertor must fulfill other critical functions such as nuclear shielding and channeling (and compression) of exhaust gas fo…
