Diversity in CLIL as experienced by Finnish CLIL teachers and students : matters of equality and equity
2022
This article focuses on how Finnish CLIL teachers and students orient to and experience diversity in CLIL. The data consist of teacher and student interviews that were analysed using qualitative content analysis to identify recurrent themes with regard to diversity. The findings indicate that the theme of equality in the sense of ‘the same for all’ in both teaching, assessing and homework was readily brought up by both groups, reflecting the ethos of equality prevalent in Finnish education. Equity, however, was not similarly highlighted even though it is a guiding principle alongside equality in the Finnish Core Curriculum for Basic Education. Teachers were found reluctant to topicalise div…
Oppijankieliaineistojen annotointi – esimerkkinä ICLFI:n annotoinnin prosessit, ongelmat ja ratkaisut
2014
This article illustrates the grammatical and error annotation of learner language with the help of the International Corpus of Learner Finnish (ICLFI). In particular, we will focus on issues arising from handling with at least semi-automatic methods a morphologically rich language. What makes this corpus special compared to, for example, English-language material, is the frequent variation in di" erent forms and related errors, both due to the rich morphology of the target language. This article begins with a description of the design and implementation process of both the grammatical and error annotation, followed by a brief introduction to the material for which the annotations were desig…
Complementing the Guidance Provided by a Simulation through Teacher Questioning
2016
The interaction between the teacher and the learners when using simulations is in need of research. This study concentrates on two questioning approaches, series of probing and series of guiding questions that teachers use to guide learning with simulations. These two approaches are contrasted with non-directive and directive guidance provided by the simulation. The data was collected through screen capture videos of pre-service primary teachers teaching physics with a PhET simulation. Two cases were selected for further analysis of teacher questioning and its adaptation to the learners. Even though teachers might use the spaces for explanations created by the simulation to probe for learne…
"If I don’t enjoy it, how are my kids going to enjoy it?" : case study in English grammar teaching
2015
The question over how grammar should be taught has been discussed amongst s everal linguistics scholars. Different grammar teaching methods present different focus on the target language, grammar and learner’s role. All of the methods have their strengths and weaknesses and in order to know which method to pick, one must know all the strengths and weaknesses of these methods. In this case study, a teacher from Central Finland was interviewed on her grammar teaching methods and the reasons behind these methods for fifth-graders. Factors influencing her selection of methods were the grammatical topic to be taught, learners’ different learning styles, relevance of the topic and the most natura…

Eighth-graders' attitudes towards studying English : A study of the effect of language choices and the differences between the genders

Lexical cross-linguistic influence in the written English production of Finnish 6th grade pupils

Kielten väliset vaikutteet (transfer) ovat monitahoinen ilmiö, jota on tutkittu kielen oppimisen viitekehyksessä aktiivisesti 1900-luvun puolivälistä lähtien. Transfer-tutkimuksessa on kuitenkin perinteisesti keskitytty tutkimaan lähinnä äidinkielen vaikutuksia opittavaan vieraaseen kieleen.
CLIL-opetuksen merkitys elämänkulkujen rakentajana : kahden entisen oppilaan pohdintoja
2017
This article discusses the significance of CLIL education from the students’ perspective. Two former CLIL students, who received extensive English CLIL education in primary school in 1990s, were interviewed during the summer 2016. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the memories they had of CLIL and how they perceived its influence on their life courses. The interviews were analysed using thematic analysis with a theory-oriented framework. CLIL education had been a highly positive experience to both and they believed it had influenced their life courses pervasively. Due to CLIL, English had become an inherent part of their lives. CLIL had guided their professional choices and…
