Pastāv daudz veidi kā cilvēki, kuri mācās svešvalodu var apgūt jaunu vārdu krājumu. Viens no tiem ir skatīt piemērus kā vārdi tiek izmantoti kontekstā, starp cilvēkiem, kuriem konkrētā valoda ir dzimtā. Angļu valodas monolingvālās mācību vārdnīcas iekļauj daudz šādus piemērus, padarot tās par vienu no labākajiem avotiem. Oppiminen on vahvasti sidoksissa identiteettiin, sillä se voi saada aikaan muutoksen ihmisessä niin ajatuksen, toiminnan kuin tekojenkin tasolla. Vieraan kielen oppimista onkin verrattu uuden identiteetin omaksumiseen, sillä sen myötä oppijan käsitys itsestään muuttuu. Tarkempaa tietoa siitä, miten oppijat kokevat muuttuvansa ja millaisia identiteettejä heillä on kielen oppimisen myötä, löytyy kuitenkin hyvin vähän. This article discusses written narratives about foreign language learning. The stories were collected in a contest organised by KVS Foundation (Kansanvalistusseura), a Finnish organisation for adult education. Over 500 texts were sent for the contest, representing writers of both sexes, various language backgrounds and many professions. The age of writers varied from 8 to 80. In this article we discuss the nature of the data and the creation of a data base. Some preliminary observations are reported and a case study discussed. The relation between the academic and everyday views of language learning is also dealt with. peerReviewed
Narratives in L2 Learner Identity Development

This article focuses on second or foreign language (L2) learner identity and its development as discursively constructed, and we will summarize four studies conducted on this topic. The studies were conducted in the context of L2 teacher education in Finland, and the participants were student teachers (pre-service teachers) or recently qualified teachers of English or other L2s. As data we made use of narratives in different modes (oral, written, visual). The summarizing of the studies will be followed by a joint critical discussion of the theoretical and methodological lessons learned and possible applications. peerReviewed

Student Engagement and School Burnout in Finnish Lower-Secondary Schools: Latent Profile Analysis

Self-ratings of behavioural engagement, cognitive engagement and school burnout were used in person-centred analyses to identify latent profiles among 2,485 Finnish lower-secondary school students. Three profiles were identified: high-engagement/low-burnout (40.6% of the sample), average-engagement/average-burnout (53.9%), and low-engagement/high-burnout (5.5%). Another sample of lower-secondary school students was used to validate the 3 profiles. The factors most strongly associated with the high-engagement/low-burnout profile of lower-secondary school students’ were high levels of support from teachers and family, good academic performance, and lack of truancy. This exploratory mixed data study investigated the role of technology in adult migrant language and late literacy education in Finland. In addition to an online pre-pandemic survey targeted at Finnish language and literacy teachers, four in-service teachers were interviewed during the COVID-19 pandemic in late 2020.
