Conditioned place preference: an animal model of motivational properties of drugs

2016

2016

This article investigated the Conditioned Place Preference (CPP) technique as a useful model for studying the motivational properties of drugs of abuse. The background of the technique is presented. Methodological issues that need to be considered when designing a study using CPP are discussed. These issues include the different types of apparatus available, the different phases of the protocol and its possible variations, the type of design (biased vs unbiased), and the need to consider time effects. We discuss data interpretation issues, such what the animal learns, the presentation of the dependent variable, the influence of novelty, state-dependent learning, latent inhibition, the motor…

Developing Tele-Operated Laboratories for Manufacturing Engineering Education

2010

The aim of the PeTEX-project is to establish an e-Learning platform for the development, implementation, and delivery of educational training programs in the field of manufacturing engineering. The PeTEX team designs both: a technical platform for eLearning based on “Moodle” including distributed tele-operated experimentation facilities, and didactic and socio-technical requirements for a successful online learning community. User interfaces are deployed for remote access to instruments, data analysis and multiplexed data access via network protocols. Hence, the platform provides complex tools in order to perform various activities to support the educational process, from telemetric experim…

Gap Filling of Biophysical Parameter Time Series with Multi-Output Gaussian Processes

2018

In this work we evaluate multi-output (MO) Gaussian Process (GP) models based on the linear model of coregionalization (LMC) for estimation of biophysical parameter variables under a gap filling setup. In particular, we focus on LAI and fAPAR over rice areas. We show how this problem cannot be solved with standard single-output (SO) GP models, and how the proposed MO-GP models are able to successfully predict these variables even in high missing data regimes, by implicitly performing an across-domain information transfer. Anomaly and Change Detection in Remote Sensing Images

2021

Earth observation through satellite sensors, models and in situ measurements provides a way to monitor our planet with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. The amount and diversity of the data which is recorded and made available is ever-increasing. This data allows us to perform crop yield prediction, track land-use change such as deforestation, monitor and respond to natural disasters and predict and mitigate climate change. The last two decades have seen a large increase in the application of machine learning algorithms in Earth observation in order to make efficient use of the growing data-stream. Machine learning algorithms, however, are typically model agnostic and too flexi…

2021

ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the impact of innovative education tools-in this case, based on experimental methodology-on the acquisition of theoretical knowledge among management students. The study incorporates a clear split-sample design using two equivalent, randomly created groups. One group participates in a classroom experiment designed to illustrate the concept of the Phillips Curve, while the other participated in a traditional non-experimental lesson. The experiment is implemented under a strict protocol, while results evaluation is based on the comparison of post-experiment academic performance, which guarantees full anonymity and privacy of decisions. This design analyzes the imp…

Data from: Learning outdoors: Male lizards show flexible spatial learning under semi-natural conditions

2013

Spatial cognition is predicted to be a fundamental component of fitness in many lizard species, and yet some studies suggest that it is relatively slow and inflexible. However, such claims are based on work conducted using experimental designs or in artificial contexts that may underestimate their cognitive abilities. We used a biologically realistic experimental procedure (using simulated predatory attacks) to study spatial learning and its flexibility in the lizard Eulamprus quoyii in semi-natural outdoor enclosures under similar conditions to those experienced by lizards in the wild. To evaluate the flexibility of spatial learning, we conducted a reversal spatial-learning task in which p…

Research on Service-Learning in Physical Activity and Sport: Where We Have Been, Where We Are, Where We Are Going

2022

Higher education is under constant transformation through the use of new pedagogical models such as university service-learning (SL). Indeed, there has been an exponential uptake of university SL, among others, in the field of physical activity and sport (PAS) along with research examining these practices. However, these initiatives highlight the need to improve the quality of research in this field. This paper presents a systematic review focused on how research in this arena has been carried out, examining the following topics: paradigm, methods, instruments, discipline, limitations, and further research. A total of 45 articles met the inclusion criteria. The results show that qualitative…

Oppilaiden kanssa vastuuta jakamassa : peruskoulun kahdeksannen luokan oppilaiden autonomian vahvistaminen englannin oppitunneilla samanaikaisopetuks…

2016

The aim of this ethnographic and autoethnographic research was to explore what kind of a learning culture existed in an 8th grade English class in a Finnish basic education school in the 2011-2012 academic year. The class was taught jointly by a subject teacher and a special education teacher. A teaching experiment was implemented with the support of co-teaching during which teachers aimed to strengthen students' learning autonomy: to support their active learning and help them act as responsible learners. The research data included participant observation notes, interviews of a subject teacher and students, and different kinds of documents produced by teachers and students during the imple…
