In vitro and in vivo characterization of a new organic nitrate hybrid drug covalently bound to pioglitazone.

2014

Background/Aims: Organic nitrates represent a group of nitrovasodilators that are clinically used for the treatment of ischemic heart disease. The new compound CLC-3000 is an aminoethyl nitrate (AEN) derivative of pioglitazone, a thiazolidinedione antidiabetic agent combining the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ agonist activity of pioglitazone with the NO-donating activity of the nitrate moiety. Methods: In vitro and in vivo characterization was performed by isometric tension recording, platelet function, bleeding time and detection of oxidative stress. Results:</…

Clinical evaluation of the Er:YAG laser in combination with an enamel matrix protein derivative for the treatment of intrabony periodontal defects: a…

2003

OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study was to compare the combination therapy of deep intrabony periodontal defects using an Er:YAG laser (ERL) and enamel matrix protein derivative (EMD) to scaling and root planing+ ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)+EMD. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-two patients with chronic periodontitis, each of whom displayed 1 intrabony defect, were randomly treated with access flap surgery and defect debridement with an Er:YAG (160 mJ/pulse, 10 Hz) plus EMD (test) or with access flap surgery followed by scaling and root planing (SRP) with hand instruments plus EDTA and EMD (control). The following clinical parameters were recorded at baseline and at 6 months: plaq…

OPTIMIZATION OF GREEN-BUILDING DESIGN PROCESSES - CASE STUDY

2016

The development of a green-building project following a specific reference standard such as LEED, brings new conditions and restrains for all subjects involved in the process. Such changes affect technicians, owners, bureaucracy and also the management tasks either during design or construction phases. Within this scope, project management plays a key role for the optimization of the design-project development. This research analyzes the design process of a single case-study project from the project management perspective, taking into consideration all the activities that negatively affected the project design development. The project selected for the scope of the research is a new school …

Ileo-ileal invagination--a cause of recurrent mid-gastrointestinal bleeding: diagnostic and endoscopic therapy by means of push-and-pull enteroscopy.

2008

The types of lesions that cause bleeding in the small bowel are similar to those found in other areas in the gastrointestinal tract, such as vascular malformations, ulcers and inflammatory lesions, neoplasms and other less common lesions like Meckel's diverticulum. This report describes three patients with suspected mid-gastrointestinal bleeding with no significant past medical history. Before presenting to our unit the diagnostic work-up such as oesophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy and radiological small bowel imaging such as conventional enteroclysis or magnet resonance imaging enteroclysis had been performed without detecting any bleeding source. Capsule endoscopy suspected an angiod…

Transvalvular enteroscopy using a mother-baby endoscope system: a new approach to the distal ileum.

1997

In the past decade various endoscopes have been developed to examine the small bowel, with two principal procedures established: sonde-type enteroscopy and push-type enteroscopy. The main indication is gastrointestinal bleeding of obscure origin. Push-type enteroscopy has proved itselfto be useful for the investigation ofdiseases of the small intestine. 1 The mean instrumental insertion length published by different working groups varied between 50 and 90 cm past the ligament of Trei tzfl 2 The small bowel examination area is limited to the jejunum. The alternative method is sonde-type enteroscopy that allows an insertion length of 140 (30 to 200) cm. 3, 4 Disadvantages of this type of ente…

ag) Push-and-pull enteroscopy in the small bowel using the double-balloon technique: results of a prospective European multicenter study.

2005

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and clinical impact of push-and-pull enteroscopy (PPE) in patients with suspected or documented small-bowel diseases, in a prospective multicenter trial in three European medical centers. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 100 patients (mean age 56 +/- 16 years; range 13 - 90) were included at the three institutions between July and November 2004. The leading symptoms were: acute recurrent or chronic gastrointestinal bleeding (n = 64), polyposis syndrome (n = 8), chronic abdominal pain (n = 7), chronic diarrhea (n = 7), and others (n = 14). RESULTS No major PPE-associated complications such as perforation,…

Double-balloon enteroscopy-facilitated cyanoacrylate-injection endotherapy of small-bowel varices: an international experience from 2 European tertia…

2019

Background and Aims Small-bowel varices (SBVs) are an uncommon consequence of portal hypertension. Radiologic intervention is usually considered for first-line management. When radiologic intervention is not possible, management options become very limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE)-facilitated cyanoacrylate-injection endotherapy of SBVs. Methods This was a retrospective review of DBE-facilitated cyanoacrylate-injection endotherapy of SBVs (December 2015 to October 2016). Results Ten DBEs were performed in 6 patients (4 women; median age, 68.5 years). No radiologic or surgical options were deemed feasible. Thirteen nests of SBVs…

Long-term outcome after argon plasma coagulation of small-bowel lesions using double-balloon enteroscopy in patients with mid-gastrointestinal bleedi…

2011

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Vascular malformations are the most common sources of bleeding in the small bowel. They can be treated with argon plasma coagulation (APC) during double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE). This study aimed to evaluate the long-term follow-up of the effectiveness of APC for small-bowel bleeding by means of a single-center retrospective study. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between June 2003 and December 2005, APC treatment for small-bowel lesions was carried out during DBE in 63 patients with known or suspected mid-gastrointestinal bleeding. Fifty patients were included in the analysis. Main outcome measurements were comparison of hemoglobin values and blood transfusion requirements b…

Clinical efficacy of highly purified, doubly virus-inactivated factor VIII/von Willebrand factor concentrate (Fanhdi® ) in the treatment of von Wille…

2002

Summary. The goal of therapy in patients with von Willebrand disease (vWD) is to correct the dual defect of primary haemostasis and intrinsic coagulation reflected by low levels of von Willebrand factor (vWF) and factor VIII coagulant activity (FVIII:C). Factor VIII/von Willebrand factor (FVIII/vWF) concentrates are currently the treatment of choice in vWD patients unresponsive to desmopressin (DDAVP). However, only few studies on their clinical use are available so far. The main objective of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the clinical efficacy of a highly purified, doubly virus-inactivated FVIII/vWF concentrate with a high content of FVIII/vWF (Fanhdi®). Twenty-two patients wit…
