Drought Stress Memory at the Plant Cycle Level: A Review

2021

International audience; Plants are sessile organisms whose survival depends on their strategy to cope with dynamic, stressful conditions. It is urgent to improve the ability of crops to adapt to recurrent stresses in order to alleviate the negative impacts on their productivity. Although our knowledge of plant adaptation to drought has been extensively enhanced during the last decades, recent studies have tackled plant responses to recurrent stresses. The present review synthesizes the major findings from studies addressing plant responses to multiple drought events, and demonstrates the ability of plants to memorize drought stress. Stress memory is described as a priming effect allowing a …

Evaluation Framework of Hypertext Access for Program Comprehension Support

2008

Hypertext consists of text fragments connected by links enabling fast nonlinear browsing of the fragments. In case of program text there are many alternative ways to form the fragmentation and linkage. Transient hypertext is a general and well-grounded approach for offering capabilities to form versatile information access support for many kinds of central software maintenance activities. Transient hypertextual access structures (THASs) are data structures formed automatically based on situation dependent information needs of the users of program comprehension support tools. The approach has been implemented in HyperSoft system. It is aimed at supporting legacy software maintenance and comp…

Rebuilding a cultural legacy in a New Town. Reshape physical and cultural continuity between Old and New Gibellina

2019

In one night the town of Gibellina was destroyed by the earthquake that hit the Belice Valley in January 1968. En- thusiastically embracing the urban theories/utopias that were on trend in the 1960s, with, however, excessive and in another site. The building of infrastructures, houses and services, albeit by means of goods conceived for a city meant to be a symbol of modernity, does not have be interpreted as a weay to donate life to a whole community. It was also necessary, indeed, to take into account issue like memory, the sense of belonging, the continuity of tra- ditions: it became necessary to construct a new identity. Therefore, under the visionary guidance of the mayor Ludovico Corr…

Using Blockchain in Digitalizing Enterprise Legacy Systems: An Experience Report

2021

Blockchain technology and distributed ledger technology (DLT) offer a secure, distributed, and tamper-proof way to store and exchange information. However, apart from standard cryptocurrency-based networks, innovations and process improvements based on the blockchain technology have mostly remained on the conceptualizing stage and have not yet reached mass adoption. There is a high demand for practical experiences from developing blockchain and DLT based systems in various domains outside FinTech. This work seeks to contribute to this gap by presenting real-world experiences from developing a proof of concept for automatizing conditional payments in social benefits and healthcare domains. W…

Entrepreneurs' perceptions of official sporting events' capacity to promote their business in the long term

2021

[EN] Academic literature includes numerous studies on the assessment of the economic impacts of sporting events. Some of these impacts are only temporary and don't produce a lasting effect on the productive fabric, while others lead to long term developments. Even though residents' reactions to the long term impacts of these events have been broadly studied, the views expressed by entrepreneurs located in the area of the event remain to be investigated. This article analyses perceptions of entrepreneurs located near the Sierra Nevada Ski and Mountain Resort in Spain relating to their assessment of the long term effects of hosting the 2017 Snowboard and Freestyle Ski World Championship. This …

The Rise of Distributed Artificial Intelligence Through Shared Data and Cloud Solutions

2021

Decision-makers of present times encounter influence by an ever-increasing emotional condition created by social media, market trends, experience, and historical facts. The concept of mixed human and artificial intelligence is one of the most underrated business drivers today, and conspiracy theories, fixed mindset, and legacy systems are slowing down collective evolution. This paper intends to contribute to the everyday awareness of data sharing through cloud solutions and services. It opens a wide range of possibilities for new solutions and insights that endorse a collaborative culture where a growth mindset paired with transparency and ethics reduces time-to-value in businesses, governm…

Semantics for Managing Systems in Heterogeneous and Distributed Environment

2002

The problem of legacy systems collaboration is being solved. Particularly we look at the collaboration as workflow in a distributed and heterogeneous environment. Attention is paid to the description of semantics for workflow process definition languages. There are many solutions how semantics can be decomposed into logical fragments, but the problem of obtaining reusable components that are easy to compile into desired specific semantics still remains. We evolve the division of semantics by semantic aspects whose description is based on abstract data types (pre-built components) and connectors (meta-programs to produce the glue code) between them. This paper offers a way in which semantic …

Stolen innocence? Observance of the EU Directive on presumption of innocence by Spanish crime reporting

2021

This paper examines the compliance of Spanish crime reporting with the principles of the 2016 EU Directive on presumption of innocence, which aims at preventing the publication of information that might bias the public and the jurors against the suspect. A content analysis applied to a sample of 200 crime news stories published by eleven of the most popular print and online news platforms in 2018 reveals that the Spanish press coverage of crime is centered around the pre-trial and sentence stages, with little attention to the oral trial. The full name and the face portrait of the suspect appear in roughly one-third of the stories, but this overwhelmingly happens in news stories reporting on…

Assessing Software Replacement Success: An Industrial Case Study Applying Four Approaches

2006

This paper describes an industrial case study assessing software replacement success and other effects. The target of assessments has been a large commercial legacy system for customer register management. The success of its replacement by its performed rewrite has been assessed via four approaches concerning: user satisfaction, strengths and problems of the system, problem surveillance and expert judgments. The approaches and metrics have been selected in cooperation with industrial experts in order that they would meet the needs of their organization. The assessments have been conducted by comparing the situations before and after the rewrite. They have included quality aspects. The appli…

HALE-IoT: HArdening LEgacy Internet-of-Things devices by retrofitting defensive firmware modifications and implants

2022

Internet-Of-Things (IoT) devices and their firmware are notorious for their lifelong vulnerabilities. As device infection increases, vendors also fail to release patches at a competitive pace. Despite security in IoT being an active area of research, prior work has mainly focused on vulnerability detection and exploitation, threat modelling, and protocol security. However, these methods are ineffective in preventing attacks against legacy and End-Of-Life devices that are already vulnerable. Current research mainly focuses on implementing and demonstrating the potential of malicious modifications. Hardening emerges as an effective solution to provide IoT devices with an additional layer of d…
