Effect of COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns on planned cancer surgery for 15 tumour types in 61 countries: an international, prospective, cohort study

2021

This international, prospective, cohort study enrolled 20 006 adult (≥18 years) patients from 466 hospitals in 61 countries with 15 cancer types, who had a decision for curative surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic and were followed up until the point of surgery or cessation of follow-up (Aug 31, 2020). Average national Oxford COVID-19 Stringency Index scores were calculated to define the government response to COVID-19 for each patient for the period they awaited surgery, and classified into light restrictions (index 60). The primary outcome was the non-operation rate (defined as the proportion of patients who did not undergo planned surgery). Cox proportional-hazards regression models wer…

Recommendations for design and analysis of health examination surveys under selective non-participation

2019

Background The decreasing participation rates and selective non-participation peril the representativeness of health examination surveys (HESs). Methods Finnish HESs conducted in 1972–2012 are used to demonstrate that survey participation rates can be enhanced with well-planned recruitment procedures and auxiliary information about survey non-participants can be used to reduce selection bias. Results Experiments incorporated to pilot surveys and experience from previously conducted surveys lead to practical improvements. For example, SMS reminders were taken as a routine procedure to the Finnish HESs after testing their effect on a pilot study and finding them as a cost-effective way to inc…

Questions related to respondents’ practices regarding re-admission of patients to the ICU and how these decisions were made. Criteria were evaluated by the health care professionals as regards importance for non-readmission.Results: In total, 167 physicians agreed to participate, of whom 165 (99%) actually returned a completed questionnaire from 58 ICU…

Intellectual engagements of accounting academics: The ‘forecasted losses' intervention

2022

This paper explores the social and political potential of accounting scholarship, presenting and discussing an intellectual intervention challenging a legislative reform that significantly affected Spanish industrial relations. In this reform, an accounting artifact (forecasted losses) played an unexpected role and was misrepresented, prompting a sizeable number of scholars to sign two manifestos in 2010 and 2012 against the use of forecasted losses made by the new legislation. As promoters of this manifesto, we perform in this paper a collaborative autoethnography to reflect on the context, events, reactions, and significance of this intervention for both the academic and the industrial re…

Legal Issues Affecting Labour Market Integration of Migrants in Finland

2021

AbstractFinland has only relatively recently become a country of immigration, and as a result most immigration and integration policy legislation is also relatively recent. Since the 1990s, the number of migrants to Finland has increased steadily, motivating the adoption of various policy measures to regulate migration and support integration. From the perspective of migrant labour market integration, the two most important legislative acts are the Aliens Act (FINLEX 301/2004) and the Act on the Promotion of Immigrant Integration (FINLEX 1386/2010), which lay out basic labour market integration supports for migrants, and determine who can work in Finland and on which grounds. Finland’s comp…

Employment Protection Reform and Unemployment Inequality in a Matching Model (Reforme De La Protection De L'Emploi Et Inegalites Face Au Chomage Dans…

2007

This paper studies the impact of an unemployment protection legislation reform - a substitution between an experience rated tax and firing costs - on the level and structure of unemployment by skills. In this purpose, we consider a matching model which incorporates endogenous reservation products for job creation and job destruction, labor demand derives from a free entry condition and the tax rate aimed at financing unemployment benefits results from a balanced budget constraint. In this setting, it is shown that the introduction of the experience rated tax may improve the performance of the labor marekt; the drawbacks of such a reform depend on the degree of substitution between tradition…

Comprehensiveness Is a Cliché

2001

The purpose of this study was to explore professionals' orientation toward child assessment and planning. Semistructured questionnaire data and interview data were collected from child neurological units in Finland. Legislation in Finland does not specifically provide guidelines for family centeredness and comprehensiveness in early intervention, yet professionals have widely accepted these approaches in their work with children with disabilities and their families. Results of this study indicated that practices were not implemented consistently. Professionals' varying perceptions of the concept of comprehensiveness and family involvement seemed to interfere with the implementation of thes…

Are Traffic Announcements Really Effective? A Systematic Review of Evaluations of Crash-Prevention Communication Campaigns

2021

Communication campaigns are commonly used in the traffic and road safety sector to raise public awareness of the importance of avoiding risky road user attitudes and behaviors. Surprisingly few of these communication campaigns evaluate their effectiveness in a formal and comprehensive manner. The core aim of the present systematic review is to identify the type of studies that evaluate the effectiveness of campaigns in this sector, in order to identify and contrast their main findings. This systematic review followed the PRISMA methodology, by means of which the relevant articles based on the search term were identified. A total of 613 indexed articles were filtered, and a final set of 27 a…

Herbal medicinal products - Evidence and tradition from a historical perspective.

2017

Abstract Background Aside from the fully licensed herbal medicines there are products on the European pharmaceutical market which are registered by virtue of their longstanding traditional use. The normal registration procedure does not apply to them because presently they do not meet the legal requirements for a full license as set out in the relevant European Union Directive. One of these requirements, “proof of tradition”, has so far been dealt with in different ways and fails to meet the criteria of good practice. Method This analysis is based on a selective literature search in PubMed and in databases of medical and pharmaceutical history, interviews with licensing experts, a consensus…

Boundary Issues in New Metropolitan Cities

2012

In the last decade, the focus of Italian politics aimed at the definition of metropolitan cities and independent associations of municipalities has become increasingly important. With regard to legislation, the issue has been considered since the 1990s, but despite several debates and legislative reforms there have been no real results. The only approach used was political-institutional, anchored in obsolete patterns and unable to deal with existing realities.Urban Planning and Urban Studies materialize the political choices in operational programs and control the evolution of urban and territorial transformations. These disciplines represent the starting point to reflect upon the process o…
