The conflict in Northern Uganda is recognized as having come to an end with the signing of a cessation of hostilities agreement between the Lord’s Resistance Army and the Government of Uganda in August 2006, which resulted in improved security. Estimates suggest that the majority of the displaced populations have left their camps and moved either to transit sites near farms or to their village of origin. Building natural science learning through youth science camps

This study focuses on a youth science camp for pupils in sixth to ninth grades that is organized annually by the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The main idea of the science camp is to learn to do guided inquiry in nature. The study investigates the significance of science camp for encouraging young participants to learn science and how the camp supports their learning. The research method used was a survey. Altogether, 47 youth participated in the camp in 2012 and 2013. The story of Pitkis-Sport in Satakunnan kansa : content analysis of newspaper articles on a children and youth sports camp

This study examines the media publicity of Pitkis-Sport, a children and youth sports camp, in Satakunnan Kansa, a regional newspaper. The representations of Pitkis-Sport in the paper during the camp’s 50 years of history from 1963 to 2013 will be explored by using qualitative content analysis. Furthermore, changes in the coverage between the decades will be highlighted. The study aims to find out more about how child and youth sports and physical activities are reported in Finnish regional newspapers. Maailman terveysjärjestön WHO:n kouluviihtyvyyttä mittaavista tutkimuksista ilmenee, että mukana olevista 43 maasta Suomi sijoittui sijalle 40 kysyttäessä 11–15-vuotiailta, kuinka moni pitää koulunkäynnistä (HBSC 2010). Suomalaisissa kouluissa ei viihdytä. Tilanne on huolestuttava, sillä koulu on lasten ja nuorten työpaikka, jossa he viettävät vähintään 10 vuotta elämästään. Tässä artikkelissa kuvaamme, kuinka pyrimme purkamaan muun muassa em. tutkimuksessa esiin tullutta kouluun ja oppimiseen liittyvää viihtymättömyyttä kielileireillä, joita järjestämme Jyväskylän yliopiston Kielikampus-yhteistyönä. nonPeerReviewed

Adolescents' perception of scientific inquiry in nature : a drawing analysis

This study was carried out to determine adolescents’ perception of scientific inquiry (SI) in nature and the effect of a science camp on those perceptions. Eleven science campers (14 to 16 years old) participated in this research during a science camp. Pre- and post-test included open questions and drawing tasks. The campers’ drawings were analyzed to assess their out-of-school perceptions related to SI. The aim was to clarify what phases and factors the campers associated with SI in nature, and how their perceptions differ after participating at a science camp. Leirikouluviikko Suomen ulkopuolella: opettajan painajainen vai mahdollisuus tarjota oppilaille unohtumattomia oppimiskokemuksia ja toteuttaa opetussuunnitelmaa monipuolisesti? Astuminen ulos luokkahuoneesta oppilasjoukon kanssa on aina riski ja vaatii rohkeutta. Merkityksellisimmät oppimiskokemukset saadaan kuitenkin usein luokan ulkopuolella. Näitä voivat olla esimerkiksi oppilaiden hyvinvointiin ja osallistuvaan kansalaisuuteen liittyvät kokemukset (OPH 2006). Toivomme, että vuonna 2016 käyttöön otettava perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman perusteet kehottaisi vielä nykyistä opetussuunnitelmaa enemmän meitä opettajia toteuttamaan oppimista luokan ulkopuolella. nonPeerReviewed

Pro gradu -tutkielmani tehtävänä on kuvata ja selittää vapaaehtoisten kokemuksia Parasta Lapsille ry:n monikulttuurisista perheleireistä. Tarkoitukseni on selvittää, millaisilla selonteoilla vapaaehtoiset tekevät vapaaehtoistoimintaansa ymmärrettäväksi järjestön monikulttuurisessa perheleiritoiminnassa. Tutkimuksen näkökulma perustuu funktionaaliseen kielikäsitykseen, jonka mukaan kielelliset merkitykset ovat tilannesidonnaisia ja syntyvät siten sosiaalisessa vuorovaikutuksessa. Näin kielen käytön voidaan nähdä muokkaavan ja uusintavan yhteistä sosiaalista todellisuutta. Tutkielmani aineiston muodostaa kahdeksan yksilöteemahaastattelua.
