First Observation of a Four-egg Clutch of Long-tailed Jaeger (Stercorarius longicaudus)

5 pages; International audience; Long-tailed Jaegers (Stercorarius longicaudus) normally lay one or two eggs (rarely three), with a maximum of two eggs set by the existence of only two brood patches. Here, however, we present the first documentation of a clutch of four eggs in a Long-tailed Jaeger nest found at Zackenberg in northeastern Greenland.

AbstractMost small rodent populations in the world have fascinating population dynamics. In the northern hemisphere, voles and lemmings tend to show population cycles with regular fluctuations in numbers. In the southern hemisphere, small rodents tend to have large amplitude outbreaks with less regular intervals. In the light of vast research and debate over almost a century, we here discuss the driving forces of these different rodent population dynamics. We highlight ten questions directly related to the various characteristics of relevant populations and ecosystems that still need to be answered. 25 pages; International audience; Climate change is taking place more rapidly and severely in the Arctic than anywhere on the globe, exposing Arctic vertebrates to a host of impacts. Changes in the cryosphere dominate the physical changes that already affect these animals, but increasing air temperatures, changes in precipitation, and ocean acidification will also affect Arctic ecosystems in the future. Adaptation via natural selection is problematic in such a rapidly changing environment.
