Background: A small cross sectional area (CSA) of the paraspinal muscles may be related to low back pain among military aviators but previous studies have mainly concentrated on spinal disc degeneration. Sotilaslentokone sai tulikasteensa ensimmäisessä maailmansodassa. Lentokoneilla taivaalla sotineet miehet nousivat sodan aikana kansan sankareiksi. Tutkin ensimmäisen maailmansodan hävittäjälentäjien sankarimyyttiä Englannissa ja Saksassa sodan aikana ja sen jälkeen. Tutkin aihetta analysoimalla englantilaisen The Manchester Guardian -lehden ja saksalaisen Freiburger Zeitung -lehden kirjoituksia hävittäjälentäjistä. Tutkin lehdistä vuosia 1915–1924. Analysoin lisäksi kuuden kuuluisan hävittäjälentäjän omaelämäkertoja. Palvellessani Puolustusvoimia tutkijana ja ilmailufysiologina 17 vuotta Ilmavoimissa sekä kuusi vuotta Ilmailulääketieteen keskuksessa, sain sukkuloida aitiopaikalta lentäjien liikuntakoulutuksen ja työterveyshuollon välimaastossa. Tarkastelen artikkelissa lentäjän fyysiseen suorituskykyyn liittyviä tekijöitä liikuntatieteiden ja liikuntalääketieteen kannalta, historiaankin nojaten ja paikoitellen rakentavan kriittisesti. Sotilaslääketiede voisi hyödyntää tehokkaammin liikuntatieteen, liikuntalääketieteen sekä sotilaan fyysisen suorituskyvyn alan osaamista sotilaslentäjiin liittyvissä kysymyksissä.
