Photoinduced Formation Mechanism of the Thymine−Thymine (6−4) Adduct

The photoinduced mechanism leading to the formation of the thymine-thymine (6-4) photolesion has been studied by using the CASPT2//CASSCF approach over a dinucleotide model in vacuo. Following light absorption, localization of the excitation on a single thymine leads to fast singlet-triplet crossing that populates the triplet (3)(nπ*) state of thymine. This state, displaying an elongated C(4)═O bond, triggers (6-4) dimer formation by reaction with the C(5)═C(6) double bond of the adjacent thymine, followed by a second intersystem crossing, which acts as a gate between the excited state of the reactant and the ground state of the photoproduct. Kissing molars are a very rare form of inclusion defined as molars included in the same quadrant, with occlusal surfaces contacting each other within a single dental follicle. We present four cases of this pathology: a 35 year-old male, referred to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the Hospital Virgen del Rocio in Seville, and three females of 24, 26, and 31 years, all of which had kissing molars that were treated by tooth extraction. The aim was to carry out a literature review of preoperative radiographic signs in orthopantomography (OPG) and computed tomography (CT) related with the risk of inferior alveolar nerve damage during the surgical extraction of lower third molar (LTM). A search was made on PubMed for literature published between the years 2000 and 2009. In the reviewed literature, radiographic signs in the OPG that indicate a relationship between the LTM and the inferior alveolar canal are considered a risk factor for nerve damage. Intraoral approach for the removal of impacted third molars represents a common surgical procedure for the specialized clinician. However, in some cases such as ectopic third molars, extraoral surgical removal seems to be inevitable. We present a step by step case of a 56 year old woman with an ectopic third molar of the lower jaw along with a cystic lesion, which were surgically removed by a submandibular approach. Postoperative clinical course was uneventful and there were no signs of facial nerve paresis. Material and methods This study reports a clinical case of a 34-years old man with a pericoronal radiolucent lesion associated to an impacted lower third molar with the presence of radiopaque material inside. Factors associated with the potential for recurrence of keratocystic odontogenic tumours (KCOT) still remain to be clearly determined and no consensus exists concerning the management of KCOT. The purpose of this study was to evaluate different clinical factors associated with KCOT and its treatment methods. A retrospective review was performed of 55 cases treated from 2001 to 2010. Of the 55 cases, 27% were associated with an impacted or semi-impacted tooth. Background To investigate the prevalence of malignant and potentially malignant lesions of the lip in an oral pathology service and to compare these data with a literature review. Material and methods A total of 3173 biopsy reports and histopathological records were analyzed. Cases with a histological diagnosis of actinic cheilitis (AC) with or without epithelial dysplasia, in situ carcinoma, or lip squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) were included. Analysis of 930 patients with focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver (FNH), including 23 seen by the authors, showed the following results: 82.2% of patients were female, 37.8% of these had taken female steroidal hormones. There was no preference for a particular lobe of the liver. 57.7% of FNH were subcapsular, 33.7% were intrahepatic and 8.8% were pedunculated. Average size was 5.9 cm, 80.8% of the patients were asymptomatic. In 93.5% (115 out of 123) a space-occupying lesion in the liver could be demonstrated by sonography.
