Una experiencia de aprendizaje servicio interciclo: Relaciones interorganizacionales y orientación de carrera
2021
[EN] This service learning collaboration combines community service with academic learning. With that purpose, a collaboration network was created between the University of Valencia and Escola Gavina, a preschool, primary and secondary school. The objective was twofold, first, it attempts to give postgraduate students the opportunity to carry out a diagnostic of the inter-organizational relations of Escola Gavina. This objective is pursued through collaboration between different entities, which is one of the basis of service learning. Inter-organizational relationships are crucial in today’s society, they are becoming more frequent, and allow some organizations to achieve objectives that wo…
Metals in supramolecular chemistry
2014
Abstract Metals have played a fundamental role in the development of supramolecular chemistry. The main steps taken from the pre-supramolecular age to the present time are retraced with a brief description of salient examples from the unconscious use of gold nanoparticle in the preparation of the Lycurgus cup (5th or 4th century B.C.) to the modern use of metals as templates, for the preparation of large self-assembled structures, of molecular sensors, switches, motors and machines, for mimicking biological processes, for tissue and organ imaging or for the application of the Boolean logic at the molecular level.
Computational strategies to model the interaction and the reactivity of biologically-relevant transition metal complexes
2022
Abstract Transition metal atoms possess the unique capacity to induce significant changes in the electronic structure of their ligands, often culminating in substantial modification of their chemical behavior, and this ability explains well their evolutionary incorporation into the living matter. Exactly this complexity of metal atom behaviours on the electronic level is the reason of various quantum chemistry strategies have been developed for their description. On the other hand, the application of quantum chemistry methodologies to gain a comprehensive understanding of the interaction between metal and biological matter, can only be approached through adequate modelling of the chemical p…
"A Comment on Tobias Kronenberg's "Construction of Regional Input-Output Tables Using Nonsurvey Methods: The Role of Cross-Hauling"
2012
This article examines the effectiveness of a new non-survey regionalization method: Kronenberg’s Cross-Hauling Adjusted Regionalization Method (CHARM). This aims to take into account the fact that regions typically both import and export most commodities. Data for Uusimaa, Finland’s largest region, are employed to carry out a detailed empirical test of CHARM. This test gives very encouraging results. CHARM is suitable for studying environmental questions, but it can only be applied in situations where foreign imports have been included in the national input–output table. Where the focus is on regional output and employment, location quotients (LQs) can be used for purposes of regionalizati…
An overview of the Ephydridae (Diptera) of Saudi Arabia
2019
Despite the species richness of Ephydridae world-wide (2000 species) and its prominent environmental roles as a minor pest and as a food for wildlife, only 13 species have been recorded from Saudi Arabia. Between 2012 and 2016, a biodiversity study of Diptera was conducted at Jazan, Asir, and Najran in south-western Saudi Arabia, at 22 sites, was performed mainly using Malaise traps and sweep nets. In this study, 43 known species of Ephydridae were identified, 37 of them for the first time from southwestern Saudi Arabia and 16 from Arabian Peninsula. This brings the total number of Ephydridae species in Saudi Arabia to 49 (including previous records). There were a further four species, whic…

Primary Stability of a Hybrid Self-Tapping Implant Compared to a Cylindrical Non-Self-Tapping Implant with Respect to Drilling Protocols in an Ex Viv…
2011
Background: Modifications of implant design have been intending to improve primary stability. However, little is known about investigation of a hybrid self-tapping implant on primary stability. Purposes: The aims of this study were to evaluate the primary stability of two hybrid self-tapping implants compared to one cylindrical non-self-tapping implant, and to elucidate the relevance of drilling protocols on primary stability in an ex vivo model. Materials and Methods: Two types of hybrid self-tapping implants (Straumann® Bone Level implant [BL], Straumann® Tapered Effect implant [TE]) and one type of cylindrical non-self-tapping implant (Straumann® Standard Plus implant [SP]) were investig…
SWAPHI-LS: Smith-Waterman Algorithm on Xeon Phi coprocessors for Long DNA Sequences
2014
As an optimal method for sequence alignment, the Smith-Waterman (SW) algorithm is widely used. Unfortunately, this algorithm is computationally demanding, especially for long sequences. This has motivated the investigation of its acceleration on a variety of high-performance computing platforms. However, most work in the literature is only suitable for short sequences. In this paper, we present SWAPHI-LS, the first parallel SW algorithm exploiting emerging Xeon Phi coprocessors to accelerate the alignment of long DNA sequences. In SWAPHI-LS, we have investigated three parallelization approaches (naive, tiled, and distributed) in order to deeply explore the inherent parallelism within Xeon P…
