Lexical and sublexical units in speech perception.
2009
Saffran, Newport, and Aslin (1996a) found that human infants are sensitive to statistical regularities corresponding to lexical units when hearing an artificial spoken language. Two sorts of segmentation strategies have been proposed to account for this early word-segmentation ability: bracketing strategies, in which infants are assumed to insert boundaries into continuous speech, and clustering strategies, in which infants are assumed to group certain speech sequences together into units (Swingley, 2005). In the present study, we test the predictions of two computational models instantiating each of these strategies i.e., Serial Recurrent Networks: Elman, 1990; and Parser: Perruchet & Vint…
Spatiotemporal Dynamics of the Processing of Spoken Inflected and Derived Words:A Combined EEG and MEG Study
2011
The spatiotemporal dynamics of the neural processing of spoken morphologically complex words are still an open issue. In the current study, we investigated the time course and neural sources of spoken inflected and derived words using simultaneously recorded electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) responses. Ten participants (native speakers) listened to inflected, derived, and monomorphemic Finnish words and judged their acceptability. EEG and MEG responses were time-locked to both the stimulus onset and the critical point (suffix onset for complex words, uniqueness point for monomorphemic words). The ERP results showed that inflected words elicited a larger left-late…
Elaboration of a Critical Paradigm for Interpreting Modern Architecture: The Almost Intangible Essence of Luigi Moretti's Casa del Balilla at Trecate
2021
Modern architecture is not, from a lexical point of view, uniquely definable. The heterogeneity of the twentieth century heritage is therefore a collective wealth that should be protected from the risk of falling into oblivion. In order to avoid this, it could prove fundamental to establish a process of the knowledge of these assets. This should not, however, result in a simple and passive recording of architectural facts: a deep understanding of the complexity of modern architecture, which has as its objective the protection of buildings, could be obtained, for example, through a real and proper decoding of signs, conducted by a critical use of the metalanguage most congenial to the archit…
What Makes a Text Easy or Difficult to Understand?
1989
Abstract The question of what makes a text easy or difficult to comprehend is answered on the basis of an empirical investigation, which draws especially on theories related to text and memory linguistics. Easy and difficult texts, verified empirically, were analyzed on micro‐ and macro‐levels. Certain aspects of syntax, lexicon and information structure were first studied. These were followed by text‐level analyses related to the narrative and structural organization and the propositional structure of the texts. The article gives an account of the parameters that were most clearly associated with level of text comprehension. The results are also discussed in the light of the possible impli…
The analysis of lexical change in specialized discourse
2019
A Methodology for Bilingual Lexicon Extraction from Comparable Corpora
2015
Dictionary extraction using parallel corpora is well established. However, for many language pairs parallel corpora are a scarce resource which is why in the current work we discuss methods for dictionary extraction from comparable corpora. Hereby the aim is to push the boundaries of current approaches, which typically utilize correlations between co-occurrence patterns across languages, in several ways: 1) Eliminating the need for initial lexicons by using a bootstrapping approach which only requires a few seed translations. 2) Implementing a new approach which first establishes alignments between comparable documents across languages, and then computes cross-lingual alignments between wor…
2013
Propositional content is often incomplete but comprehenders appear to adjust meaning and add unarticulated meaning constituents effortlessly. This happens at the propositional level (The baby drank the bottle) but also at the phrasal level (the wooden turtle). In two ERP experiments, combinatorial processing was investigated in container/content alternations and adjective-noun combination transforming an animate entity into a physical object. Experiment 1 revealed that container-for-content alternations (The baby drank the bottle) engendered a Late Positivity on the critical expression and on the subsequent segment, while content-for-container alternations (Chris put the beer on the table) …

Signals of intensification and attenuation in orchestra and choir conduction
2017
Based on a model of communication according to which not only words but also body signals constitute lexicons (Poggi, 2007), the study presented aimes at building a lexicon of conductors’ multimodal behaviours requesting intensification and attenuation of sound intensity. In a corpus of concerts and rehearsals, the conductors’ body signals requesting to play or sing forte, piano, crescendo, diminuendo were analysed through an annotation scheme describing the body signals, their meanings, and their semiotic devices: generic codified (the same as in everyday language); specific codified (shared with laypeople but with specific meanings in conduction); direct iconic, (resemblance between visua…
Daudzvalodu kompetences loma angļu leksikas apguvē
2021
