(1) On the Canary Islands and Madeira typical bird-flowers occur in at least twelve species of six genera, although true flower-birds are absent. This inconsistency is in part elucidated by field observations on exotic and wild plants of Tenerife. —(2) In the Botanical Garden of Orotava it could be observed that various ornithophilous plants, which were introduced there, were visited by indigenous birds for nectar and in one case (Orthostemon) for food tissue. Etymological research of Silesian dialects lexis enables to present its diverse linguistic and cultural bonds with neighboring dialects and languages. The existing scope and State of lexicographical study of Silesian lexis allows to engage in this extensive research. Not many articles concerning this matter have been published until now. This article discusses the etymology of a few word family originating from the words: kiełb, kisać, kisieć, kisnąć, kiełzać (się), klizać, klejzać as well as from the core kur-l-.

Lexicographic studies in medicine: Academic Word List for clinical case histories

Medical texts are often thought to pertain to a closed community, but how far the language used by that community overlaps with general academic lexis is unknown. We examined a corpus of clinical case histories using the software RANGE to characterise the lexis of clinical case histories quantitatively and present a wordlist for clinical medicine. Only 58% of the general academic wordlists are found in clinical texts but the 85% overlap with an important academic wordlist, the Coxhead 570, furnishes evidence for the academic nature of the lexis used for clinical cases in Medicine. The subject of the article is the name of an old dish made of water and bread, registered in the Silesian dialects as warmuszka. The purpose of the article is to discuss the etymology of the name and to show how the name functioned in comparison with other terms for bread soup in the old general Polish lanquage and the dialects. Material research revealed that the most likely source of the name warmuszka is Middle Upper German form warmuos adopted through the Czech language in various forms (farmuszka, framuszka, faramuszka, warmuz) and adapted to the Polish language, eventually.

Jauniešu mobilitāte ir nozīmīgs pētījumu virziens migrācijas literatūrā. Jaunieši ir ģeogrāfiski ļoti mobila iedzīvotāju grupa. Migrācijas izpētē iedzīvotāju pārvietošanās bieži tiek skatīta cilvēka dzīves gājuma kontekstā. Šajā darbā pētītas vienas Rīgas ģimnāzijas klases absolventu migrācijas biogrāfijas, lai labāk izprastu jauniešu migrācijas komplekso raksturu Latvijā. Pētījumā izmantota mikro analītiskā pieeja jauniešu migrācijas izpētē, bet nepieciešamie dati iegūti ar padziļinātu un strukturētu interviju palīdzību. The article is devoted to sublimity as one of the rule shaping religious discourse (especially in Christian religious tradition). In the first part the author presents three ways of understanding of the term sublime/sublimity, which have developed during historical reflection on this category: sublimity as a grand style (one of the three rhetoric styles); as a grand (high) speech (Pseudo-Longinus); as an ambivalent experience of dread and fascination (Rudolf Otto), that arouses in the believer feelings of numinous.
