Mildronate: An Antiischemic Drug for Neurological Indications

2005

Mildronate (3-(2,2,2-trimethylhydrazinium)propionate; MET-88; meldonium, quaterine) is an antiischemic drug developed at the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis. Mildronate was designed to inhibit carnitine biosynthesis in order to prevent accumulation of cytotoxic intermediate products of fatty acid beta-oxidation in ischemic tissues and to block this highly oxygen-consuming process. Mildronate is efficient in the treatment of heart ischemia and its consequences. Extensive evaluation of pharmacological activities of mildronate revealed its beneficial effect on cerebral circulation disorders and central nervous system (CNS) functions. The drug is used in neurological clinics for the trea…

Crystal structure of human gamma-butyrobetaine hydroxylase.

2010

Gamma-butyrobetaine hydroxylase (GBBH) is a 2-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase that catalyzes the biosynthesis of l-carnitine by hydroxylation of gamma-butyrobetaine (GBB). l-carnitine is required for the transport of long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria for generating metabolic energy. The only known synthetic inhibitor of GBBH is mildronate (3-(2,2,2-trimethylhydrazinium) propionate dihydrate), which is a non-hydroxylatable analog of GBB. To aid in the discovery of novel GBBH inhibitors by rational drug design, we have solved the three-dimensional structure of recombinant human GBBH at 2.0A resolution. The GBBH monomer consists of a catalytic double-stranded beta-helix (DBSH) domai…

Unveiling the strong interaction among hadrons at the LHC

2020

One of the key challenges for nuclear physics today is to understand from first principles the effective interaction between hadrons with different quark content. First successes have been achieved using techniques that solve the dynamics of quarks and gluons on discrete space-time lattices1,2. Experimentally, the dynamics of the strong interaction have been studied by scattering hadrons off each other. Such scattering experiments are difficult or impossible for unstable hadrons3–6 and so high-quality measurements exist only for hadrons containing up and down quarks7. Here we demonstrate that measuring correlations in the momentum space between hadron pairs8–12 produced in ultrarelativistic…

Cultural Identity and Using Music in the Intercultural Educational Process

2014

Abstract Working with music in early childhood education stimulates a child's brain, motor skills and communicative abilities, in addition to their socio-affective relationships. Through songs, a child can start learning about and practicing his or her culture of origin. At this point, the teacher should be aware of pluriculturalism in the classroom and promote awareness of cultural identity as an approach to developing interculturalism. Nursery rhymes, because of their compositional characteristics, are the perfect tool to develop intercultural values and ensure that children not only understand their own culture but also recognise their cultural characteristics in other cultures. A series…

A novel EDA variant causing X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia: Case report

2021

Abstract Hereditary ectodermal dysplasias are a complex group of inherited disorders characterised by abnormalities in two or more ectodermal derivatives (skin, nails, sweat glands, etc.). There are two main types of these disorders – hidrotic and hypohidrotic/anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasias. Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) or Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome (OMIM: 305100 ) occurs in 1 out of 5000–10,000 births [19] and has an X-linked recessive inheritance pattern (X-linked hypohydrotic ectodermal dysplasia – XLHED) [2] . The main cause of XLHED is a broad range of pathogenic variants in the EDA gene (HGNC:3157, Xq12-13) which encodes the transmembrane protein ectodysplasin-A [4]…

The oxidizing agent tertiary butyl hydroperoxide induces disturbances in spindle organization, c-meiosis, and aneuploidy in mouse oocytes

1996

It has been recently proposed that a concomitant generation of oxidative stress of oocytes with increasing maternal age may be a major factor responsible for the age-related increase in aneuploid conceptions. As a preliminary step in the testing of this hypothesis, we need to confirm that oxidative stress in itself can induce errors in chromosome segregation. In order to achieve this goal, germinal vesicle (GV)-stage mouse oocytes from unstimulated ICR and (C57BL x CBA) F1 hybrid female mice were matured in vitro for 9 h for metaphase I (MI) oocytes or 16 h for metaphase II (MII) oocytes in the presence of varying concentrations of the oxidizing agent tertiary-butyl hydroperoxide (tBH). MII…

Mono and Stereoscopic Image Analysis for Detecting the Transverse Profile of Worn-Out Rails

2012

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to suggest a new procedure for reconstructing the transverse profile of rails in operation by means of image-processing technique. This methodological approach is based on the “information” contained in high-resolution photographic images of tracks and on specific algorithms which allow to obtain the exact geometric profile of the rails and therefore to measure the state of the rail-head extrados wear. The analyses and the results concern rails taken from railway lines under upgrading by means of mono- and stereoscopic methods which are appropriate to be employed in laboratory applications or in high-efficiency surveys in situ.

Ūdeņraža mikrobioloģiska producēšana, izmantojot Enterobacter aerogenes, un uzkrāšana AB5 tipa sakausējumā

2017

Nosakot LaNi…
