Detecting Crystalline Nonequilibrium Phases on the Nanometer Scale

The use of Automated electron Diffraction Tomography (ADT) is presented as a novel approach for crystallization studies at the nanometer scale for nonequilibrium phases. Here, ADT was applied to elucidate the structural identity of the recently reported hexagonal morphology of caffeine crystals, which grow only on specific surfaces. Caffeine was crystallized from solution on a specially treated TEM carbon grid. The analysis of ADT data revealed that the lattice parameters of these hexagons match those of the high temperature α- form of caffeine. Raman spectrum of the high pressure phase of polyethylene

The Raman spectrum of the hexagonal high pressure phase of polyethylene was measured at 5.2 kbar and 240 °C, using a hydrostatic high pressure cell. The spectrum is largely identical to that obtained for the melt. This result indicates that the conformational short range order in the hexagonal phase remains melt —like and is not modified by the overall straightening of chains.

Elastoplastic analysis by active macro-zones with linear kinematic hardening and von Mises materials.

In this paper a strategy to perform elastoplastic analysis with linear kinematic hardening for von Mises materials under plane strain conditions is shown. The proposed approach works with the Symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method applied to multidomain problems using a mixed variables approach, to obtain a more stringent solution. The elastoplastic analysis is carried out as the response to the loads and the plastic strains, the latter evaluated through the self-equilibrium stress matrix. Nonmonotone Saturation Profiles for Hydrostatic Equilibrium in Homogeneous Porous Media

Nonmonotonic saturation profiles (saturation overshoot) occur as travelling waves in gravity driven fingering. They seem important for preferential flow mechanisms and have found much attention recently. Here, we predict them even for hydrostatic equilibrium when all velocities vanish. We suggest that hysteresis suffices to explain the effect. In this paper, we consider a sensing-based spectrum sharing scenario in cognitive radio networks where the overall objective is to maximize the sum-rate of each cognitive radio user by optimizing jointly both the detection operation based on sensing and the power allocation, taking into account the influence of the sensing accuracy and the interference limitation to the primary users. A non-hydrostatic pressure distribution solver for the nonlinear shallow water equations over irregular topography

Abstract We extend a recently proposed 2D depth-integrated Finite Volume solver for the nonlinear shallow water equations with non-hydrostatic pressure distribution. The proposed model is aimed at simulating both nonlinear and dispersive shallow water processes. We split the total pressure into its hydrostatic and dynamic components and solve a hydrostatic problem and a non-hydrostatic problem sequentially, in the framework of a fractional time step procedure. Multicell power allocation method based on game theory for inter-cell interference coordination

As a new technology, coordinated multipoint (CoMP) transmission is included in LTE-Advanced study item. Moreover, the network architecture in LTE-Advanced system is modified to take into account coordinated transmission. A Study of Nash-Evolutionary Algorithms for Reconstruction Inverse Problems in Structural Engineering

In this paper we deal with solving inverse problems in structural engineering (both the reconstruction inverse problem and the fully stressed design problem are considered). We apply a game-theory based Nash-evolutionary algorithm and compare it with the standard panmictic evolutionary algorithm. The procedure performance is analyzed on a ten bar sized test case of discrete real cross-section types structural frame, where a significant increase of performance is achieved using the Nash approach, even achieving super-linear speed-up.

Nash Equilibrium in a Road Network with Many Groups of Users

In this chapter concentrates on the relationships between individual and group behaviour of drivers in a road network. Such relationships are established by comparing the optimal routing of drivers (system optimum of Wardrop), the competitive drivers’ groups routing (Nash equilibrium), and the selfish drivers routing (user equilibrium of Wardrop).
