Informal Institutions and Democracy
2000
Informal institutions have grown in relevance for the analysis of new ‘third wave’ democracies. The research strategy receives its impetus from the debate on neo‐institutionalism theory, which offers a productive perspective for structuring the field of analysis. This article explains the distinguishing factors between formal and informal institutions. It addresses five basic types of informal institutions, examines the ways in which they function and discusses their relevance in terms of democracy theory. Each type is characterized by the way in which it enacts its respective means of political influence. The study distinguishes between forms of specific relationship (clientelism), of mate…
Klientelistische Korruptions-Netzwerke – Konzeptionelle und empirische Ansätze
2014
Corruption is widespread all over the world. It is seen as a serious problem for wealth, equality, democracy and development. In many countries, corruption is not a deviant behaviour but the norm, generally practised by actors; hence corruption is an informal institution. Despite this, a consensual definition of corruption is nowhere in sight. One way of approaching corruption might be to study forms of corruption. A form or variant often mentioned is corruption networks, or clientelism. In this paper, clientelism is analysed in order to proceed further towards an understanding of corruption. With this perspective, corruption is not seen as a deviant behaviour but the social embeddedness of…
A future for Kiribati. New models for resilient housing settlements
2023
According to the Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate, the sea level has grown at a rate of 3.6 mm per year in the period between 2005 and 2015, increasing faster over the last century due to the melting of ice caps and the thermal expansion of the ocean. This increases the risks for populations living in coastal areas and in particular for those living in arctic regions and in the atolls, like the islands of Kiribati which, by the middle of the century, could become uninhabitable. The coastal protection systems and the adaptation processes that use ecosystems and solutions derived from nature (ecosystem-based adaptation), foresee rather long realization times an…
Introducing “healthcare resilience” in clinical risk management
2016
This paper reports the results of an explorative case study in an Italian hospital and presents a conceptual framework for healthcare resilience, which clarifies why and how healthcare structures need to be resilient in order to fully deal with clinical risk. In other words, it is not sufficient to take the “path to zero harm”. Healthcare companies have also to pursue strategies for maximizing the organizational resilience, in terms of resistance, reliability, redundancy and flexibility. This is quite important because, no matter which CRM technique and/or best practice is adopted, sometime adverse events occur. And, in this case, being resilient can help in dampening their negative consequ…
Funkcionālā programmēšana mājaslapu izstrādē
2017
A reappraisal of the Pleurotus eryngii complex – New species and taxonomic combinations based on the application of a polyphasic approach, and an ide…
2014
The Pleurotus eryngii species-complex comprises choice edible mushrooms growing on roots and lower stem residues of Apiaceae (umbellifers) plants. Material deriving from extensive sampling was studied by mating compatibility, morphological and ecological criteria, and through analysis of ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and IGS1 rRNA sequences. Results revealed that P. eryngii sensu stricto forms a diverse and widely distributed aggregate composed of varieties elaeoselini, eryngii, ferulae, thapsiae, and tingitanus. Pleurotus eryngii subsp. tuoliensis comb. nov. is a phylogenetically sister group to the former growing only on various Ferula species in Asia. The existence of Pleurotus nebrodensis outside of S…
Mapping and assessing coastal resilience in the Caribbean region
2015
Assessing the vulnerability and resilience to coastal hazards is a critical worldwide issue, especially for hurricane-prone coastal regions such as the Caribbean. However, the development of a useful metric for vulnerability and resilience assessment has a lot of challenges. Cartography and GIS analysis can contribute effectively to the solution of the issue by integrating natural and human data layers for assessment, mapping, and visualization. This paper uses the new Resilience Inference Measurement (RIM) model to assess the resilience of 25 countries in the Caribbean region to hurricanes. The RIM indices of the countries were computed using three variables representing three dimensions: …
Parental Stress and ASD
2016
The objectives of this study were (a) to evaluate parental stress in parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD group) and compare it with the stress in parents of children with typical development (comparison group); (b) to study the relationship between parental stress, autism severity, and both verbal and performance IQ; and (c) to study the relationship between parental stress and resilience. Parental stress in the ASD group was clinically significant and higher than in the comparison group. The child’s autism severity was a significant predictor of parental stress related to the child’s distractibility and hyperactivity. The child’s verbal IQ was a significant predictor o…
Spatio-temporal saliency detection in dynamic scenes using color and texture features
2014
Visual saliency is an important research topic in the field of computer vision due to its numerouspossible applications. It helps to focus on regions of interest instead of processingthe whole image or video data. Detecting visual saliency in still images has been widelyaddressed in literature with several formulations. However, visual saliency detection invideos has attracted little attention, and is a more challenging task due to additional temporalinformation. Indeed, a video contains strong spatio-temporal correlation betweenthe regions of consecutive frames, and, furthermore, motion of foreground objects dramaticallychanges the importance of the objects in a scene. The main objective o…
