Horizon: Resilience – Design of a Serious Game for Ecological Momentary Intervention for Depression

2021

Depression is the world’s most prevalent mental disorder and the primary source of disability adjusted life years (DALY). While traditional face-to-face therapies have been shown to be effective, alternative delivery methods, e.g. internet-based therapies, have been investigated to overcome barriers to access, such as lack of availability of therapists and infrastructure. This article presents the design of a mobile serious game as a novel psychological momentary ecological intervention for depressive symptoms. We discuss how selected principles and techniques of common psychological frameworks used to tackle depression, namely Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (including Behavioral Activation) …

Paths to the recognition of homo-parental adoptive rights in the EU-27: a QCA analysis

2015

ABSTRACTAlthough the recognition of the adoptive rights of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) couples is a socially salient topic, cross-national variation regarding this issue has been largely underexplored in social science research. With the aid of configurational analysis, this article fills this gap and shows the conditions that explain the recognition of the adoptive rights of homosexual couples in the countries of the EU-27. It is argued that two different paths led to this outcome. All countries where adoptive rights were recognized had higher degrees of secularization and lower levels of social homophobia. In addition, in Northern European countries, the Protestant back…

A Multi-Scale Colour and Keypoint Density-Based Approach for Visual Saliency Detection

2020

In the first seconds of observation of an image, several visual attention processes are involved in the identification of the visual targets that pop-out from the scene to our eyes. Saliency is the quality that makes certain regions of an image stand out from the visual field and grab our attention. Saliency detection models, inspired by visual cortex mechanisms, employ both colour and luminance features. Furthermore, both locations of pixels and presence of objects influence the Visual Attention processes. In this paper, we propose a new saliency method based on the combination of the distribution of interest points in the image with multiscale analysis, a centre bias module and a machine …

GDL90fuzz: Fuzzing - GDL-90 Data Interface Specification Within Aviation Software and Avionics Devices–A Cybersecurity Pentesting Perspective

2022

As the core part of next-generation air transportation systems, the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is becoming very popular. However, many (if not most) ADS-B devices and implementations support and rely on Garmin’s GDL-90 protocol for data exchange and encapsulation. In this paper, we research GDL-90 protocol fuzzing options and demonstrate practical Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks on popular Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) software operating on mobile devices. For this purpose, we specifically configured our own avionics pentesting platform. and targeted the popular Garmin’s GDL-90 protocol as the industry-leading devices operate on it. We captured legitimate traffic from …

Reconfigurations in sustainability transitions : a systematic and critical review

2021

Two streams of literature have become especially prominent in understanding social change toward sustainability within the past decades: the research on socio-technical transitions and applications of social practice theory. The aim of this article is to contribute to efforts to create dialogue between these two approaches. We do this by focusing on the concept of reconfiguration, which has become a much-used, but poorly defined notion in the discussion on sustainability transitions. To understand what is defined as reconfiguration in systems and practices, and how the understanding of reconfiguration in regimes could benefit from insights about reconfiguration in practices, we conducted a …

Invasions of the non-indigenous red alga Lophocladia lallemandii (Montagne) F. Schmitz off the Island of Ischia (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy)

2021

This paper describes the distribution and spread of the non-indigenous red alga Lophocladia lallemandii (Montagne) F. Schmitz along the coast of the Island of Ischia (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). Lophocladia lallemandii was monitored through surveys from July 2019 to January 2020 at the Capo Sant’Angelo (Ischia), where L. lallemandii was observed, but not reported, in the years preceding the invasion of the upper rocky infralittoral shore reported here. It is noteworthy that a large portion of the study area is included within one of the two “B no-take” zones of the Marine Protected Area of the “Regno di Nettuno” (“Neptune’s Realm”). During the surveys, the alga was first observed in the middle …

Notes about the naturalization in Sicily of Paulownia tomentosa (Paulowniaceae) and remarks about its global spread

2019

Paulownia tomentosa is native to different regions of East Asia. Here, the first case of natural regeneration in Sicily is reported. Although Paulownia is not still invading typically Mediterranean areas, mainly due to ecological constraints, its recognized invasiveness at a global level imposes the need to monitor the ongoing process.

Retail Geography in Italy: Historical Evolution and Future Challenges

2020

This chapter deals with the evolution of retail geography in Italy through a double perspective of analysis. On the one hand, the work deals with the transformation of retailscapes in the country, ranging from the first department stores to the evolution of retail in central and suburban areas. On the other hand, the chapter scrutinises the emergence of retail geography in Italy as a sub-discipline, strictly linked to the urban and economic approach, in order to deeply evaluate the geographical contribution in interpreting as well as analysing the transformation of retail and consumption places, which, in recent decades, have been completely reshaping forms and functions of Italian urban an…

Gerontology is essential to the identity of geriatric medicine

2019

The concept of the preeminence of multidimensional func-tional status in health care, one of the first achievements of geriatric medicine, has been endorsed by diverse sources, and is now a cultural patrimony of medicine. One of the main goals of geriatric medicine is to allow older people to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible. The integrated research of geriatricians and gerontologists has been at the forefront of the development, testing, and application of tools to assess functional status, including activities of daily living, gait and mobility, cognition, psy-chological status, depression, and social support.
