Springs-based Simulation for Image Retargeting

2011

In this paper an efficient method for image retargeting is pro- posed. It relies onto a mechanical model based on springs network. Each pixel displacement (compression or expan- sion) is given by the network response, according to the springs stiffness. The properties of the springs are deter- mined as function of the visual relevance of the pixels. Such model does not require any optimization, since its so- lution is obtained simply from a linear system of equations, allowing real-time application even for large images. The approach is fully automatic, though can be improved by interactively providing cues such as geometric constraints and/or manual relevant object labeling. The results pr…

Object Matching in Distributed Video Surveillance Systems by LDA-Based Appearance Descriptors

2009

Establishing correspondences among object instances is still challenging in multi-camera surveillance systems, especially when the cameras’ fields of view are non-overlapping. Spatiotemporal constraints can help in solving the correspondence problem but still leave a wide margin of uncertainty. One way to reduce this uncertainty is to use ap- pearance information about the moving objects in the site. In this paper we present the preliminary results of a new method that can capture salient appearance characteristics at each camera node in the network. A Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model is created and maintained at each node in the camera network. Each object is encoded in terms of the…

Real-time content-aware image resizing using reduced linear model

2010

In this paper an effective and efficient method for contentaware image resizing is proposed. It is based on the solution of a linear system where each pixel displacement (compression or expansion) is determined in dependence of the visual relevance of the pixel itself. The linear nature of the model allows real-time application of the method even for large images. This fully automatic approach can be also improved by interactively providing cues such as geometric constraints and/or manual relevant object labeling. The results have proven that the presented method achieves results comparable or superior to existent strategies, while improving efficiency.

Methods and Techniques for Multi-source Data Analysis and Fusion

This work has been inspired by the recent trend in remote sensing and environmental data acquisition. Remote sensing techniques allow us to measure information about an object without touching it. In the last decades remote sensing via satellites has been used in various applications such as Earth observation, weather and storm predictive analysis, atmospheric monitoring, climate change, human-environment interactions. Sensors on airborne and satellite platforms have been recording signals from space for many years, giving rise to a huge amount of data. Some data are processed on-board but others are treated and post-processed in ground stations. Signal and image processing are widely appli…

Retargeting Framework Based on Monte-carlo Sampling

2015

Advance in image technology and proliferation of acquisition devices like smartphones, digital cameras, etc., made the display of digital images ubiquitous. Many displays exist in the market, spanning within a large variety of resolutions and shapes. Thus, displaying content optimizing the available number of pixels has become a very important issue in the multimedia community, and the image retargeting problem is being widely faced. In this work, we propose an image retargeting framework based on monte-carlo sampling. We operate the non-homogeneous resizing as the composition of several simple atomic resizing functions. The shape of such atomic operator can be chosen within a set of tested…

Resilient hexapod robot

2017

In this paper, we present a method of learning desired behaviour of the specific robotic system and transfer of the existing knowledge in the event of partial system failure. Six-legged robot (hexapod) built on top of the Bioloid platform is used for the method verification. We use genetic algorithms to optimize the hexapod's gait, after which we simulate physical damage caused to the robot. The goal of this method is to optimize the gait in accordance with the actual robot morphology, instead of the assumed one. Also, knowledge that was previously gained will be transferred in order to improve the results. Nonstandard genetic algorithm with the specific mixed population is used for this.

An Evolution of the Non-Parameter Harris Affine Corner Detector: A Distributed Approach

2009

A parallel version of a new automatic Harris-based corner detector is presented. A scheduler to dynamically and homogeneously distribute high computational workload on heterogeneous parallel architectures such as Grid systems has been implemented to speedup the whole procedure. Experimental results show the robustness of the underlying scheduler, which can be easily exploited in various automatic image analysis systems.

Saliency Based Image Cropping

2013

Image cropping is a technique that is used to select the most relevant areas of an image, discarding the useless ones. Handmade selection, especially in case of large photo collections, is a time consuming task. Automatic image cropping techniques may help users, suggesting to them which part of the image is the most relevant, according to specific criteria. We suppose that the most visually salient areas of a photo are also the most relevant ones to the users. In this paper we present an extended version of our previously proposed method, to extract the saliency map of an image, which is based on the analysis of the distribution of the interest points of the image. Three different interest…

Midground Object Detection in Real World Video Scenes,

2007

Traditional video scene analysis depends on accurate background modeling to identify salient foreground objects. However, in many important surveillance applications, saliency is defined by the appearance of a new non-ephemeral object that is between the foreground and background. This midground realm is defined by a temporal window following the object's appearance; but it also depends on adaptive background modeling to allow detection with scene variations (e.g., occlusion, small illumination changes). The human visual system is ill-suited for midground detection. For example, when surveying a busy airline terminal, it is difficult (but important) to detect an unattended bag which appears…

Il conto corrente bancario

2016
