Spatially resolved optical studies of F-center diffusion during and after the photothermal F\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X color center conversion have been performed by optical scanning and holographic methods in electrolytically colored KBr crystals. Average velocities and diffusion coefficients of F centers have been determined for Gaussian and periodical spatial exposing light intensity distributions. A strong influence of the light intensity gradient has been found on F-center diffusion. It manifests itself by a rapid increase of the effective diffusion coefficient when the light intensity gradient is decreased. Modulation of coaxial modal interferometers based on long period gratings in double cladding fibers

This paper reports on the dynamic modulation of coaxial interferometers based on two cascaded long period gratings written in double cladding fibers. The interferometer is modulated by a piezoelectric ceramic which stretches one the gratings at tens of kHz, the output light is intensity modulated with an efficiency of 97 %. The device operates at 1530nm, has more than 50nm bandwidth, insertion loss of 0.4 dB and a temperature drift of 0.11 nm/ degrees C.
Measuring the refractive state of an eye based on the intensity of the retinal reflex

AbstractWhen examining the fundus of the eye with an ophthalmoscope, the intensity of the retinal reflex depends on the refractive state of the eye. In this study, application of this phenomenon for measuring the refractive state of the eye is demonstrated. First, a calibration curve relating the intensity of the retinal reflex and the refractive state was obtained using a model eye. Next, the intensity of the retinal reflex was measured while subjects were viewing a checker-board pattern, the distance of which was varied within the range from 0.17 to 1 m. [1] A high-resolution quantitative analysis of the calcareous planktonic assemblages (planktonic foraminifers and calcareous nannofossils) at the Punta Piccola section (at the base of which, the global standard stratotype-section and point of the Piacenzian stage is defined) provided a more accurate biostratigraphy for the Mediterranean middle Pliocene (2.6–3.6 Ma). Summary The influence of light quantity on the steady-state levels of plastid encoded transcripts was examined during the development of primary leaves from mustard ( Sinapis alba ) plants. RbcL mRNA, petA mRNA, and psbA mRNA, which encode the large subunit (LSU) of Rubisco, Cyt f of the Cyt b6/f complex, and D1 protein of PS II were investigated in leaves grown under high-light (HL) or low-light (LL) conditions. Additionally, the nuclear encoded 25 S rRNA was quantified. As a proportion of total RNA, the levels of 25 S rRNA, rbcL mRNA, petA mRNA, and psbA mRNA did not differ substantially in the HL versus LL plants. Enhanced viewing-angle integral imaging by multiple-axis telecentric relay system

One of the main limitations of integral imaging is the narrow viewing angle. This drawback comes from the limited field of view of microlenses during the pickup and display. We propose a novel all-optical technique which allows the substantial increase of the field of view of any microlens and therefore of the viewing angle of integral-imaging displays.

Images taken in noncooperative environments do not always have targets under the same illumination conditions. There is a need for methods to detect targets independently of the illumination. We propose a technique that yields correlation peaks that are invariant under a linear intensity transformation of object intensity. The new locally adaptive contrast-invariant filter accomplishes this by combining three correlations in a nonlinear way. Intensity-invariant nonlinear filtering for detection in camouflage.

We introduce a method based on an orthonormal vector space basis representation to detect camouflaged targets in natural environments. The method is intensity invariant so that camouflaged targets are detected independently of the illumination conditions. The detection technique does not require one to know the exact camouflage pattern, but only the class of patterns (e.g., foliage, netting, woods). We use nonlinear filtering and the calculation of several correlations. The nonlinearity of the filtering process also allows high discrimination against false targets. Several experiments confirm the target detectability where strong camouflage might delude even human viewers.
Effect of reflections on phase hologram recording in amorphous As-S-Se films

Experimental and theoretical studies of phase hologram recording in amorphous As-S-Se films with slightly wedge-shaped thickness profile are presented. It is shown that Fabry-Perot resonator effect caused by the interference of multiply reflected light beams inside the sample strongly changes the values of diffraction efficiency and its growth rate as well as the exposure time dependences of diffraction efficiency and transmissivity making them site-dependent and sample-dependent. Absorptivity and recording light intensity inside the sample are also significantly changed.
