Large solid-angle polarisation analysis at thermal neutron wavelengths using a 3He spin filter

2002

Abstract The strongly spin-dependent absorption of neutrons in nuclear spin-polarised 3 He opens up the possibility of polarising neutrons from reactors and spallation sources over the full kinematical range of cold, thermal and hot neutrons. In this paper we describe the first large solid-angle polarisation analysis measurement using a 3 He neutron spin filter at thermal neutron wavelengths ( λ =2.5 A). This experiment was performed on the two-axis diffractometer D1B at the Institut Laue-Langevin using a banana-shaped filter cell (530 cm 3 ) filled with 3 He gas with a polarisation of P =52% at a pressure of 2.7 bar. A comparison is made with a previous measurement on D7 using a cold neutr…

The3He neutron spin filter at ILL

1997

Abstract Neutron Spin-Filters (NSF) using gaseous polarized 3He have long been recognized as having enormous potential value in many polarized neutron scattering applications and, accordingly, ILL started a development program some years ago. This report gives an account of the present status of the project. Let us first briefly recall the reasons why the 3He-NSF is desirable as a generic polarization tool: Being a pure transmission device, NSF naturally decouples the neutron spin selection from other optical functions. Designing polarized instruments will be simplified having no geometrical constraints due to Bragg optics or beam deviation in the polarizer. Angular acceptance and energy ba…

Calibration of a neutron time-of-flight multidetector system for an intensity interferometry experiment

2004

We present the details of an experiment on light particle interferometry. In particular, we focus on a time-of-flight technique which uses a cyclotron RF signal as a start and a liquid scintillator time signal as a stop, to measure neutron energy in the range of En approximate to 1.8-150 MeV. This dynamic range (up to 300 ns) is much larger than the beam bunch separation (54 ns) of the AGOR cyclotron (KVI). However, the problem of a short burst period is overcome by using the time information obtained from a fast projectile fragment phoswich detector. The complete analysis procedure to extract the final neutron kinetic energy spectra, is discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Event rates for CDM detectors from large-scale shell-model calculations

2006

Abstract We investigate the scattering of the CDM candidate LSP (Lightest Supersymmetric Particle) off nuclei. We have computed the associated event rates and annual modulation signals for the 23 Na, 71 Ga, 73 Ge and 127 I CDM detectors by using the nuclear shell model in realistic model spaces and exploiting microscopic effective two-body interactions. Large-scale computations had to be performed in order to achieve convergence of the results. We have tabulated the associated nuclear-structure coefficients for several LSP masses enabling easy interpolation of our results for any other mass. The relevance of the spin-dependent and coherent channels for the event rates is discussed, from bot…

Elastic and inelastic LSP-nucleus scattering on medium-heavy nuclei

2010

Elastic and inelastic scattering rates of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) off nuclei are derived for the stable iodine, xenon and cesium detectors. The parameters of the supersymmetric theory are decoupled from the nuclear structure. The involved nuclear wave functions are calculated in the nuclear shell model by using a realistic effective two-nucleon interaction in a realistic valence space. By using fitted nuclear gyromagnetic factors we successfully reproduce the relevant spectroscopic data in the discussed nuclei.

First Accurate Normalization of the β -delayed α Decay of N16 and Implications for the C12(α,γ)O16 Astrophysical Reaction Rate

2018

The C-12(alpha,gamma)O-16 reaction plays a central role in astrophysics, but its cross section at energies relevant for astrophysical applications is only poorly constrained by laboratory data. The reduced a width, gamma(11), of the bound 1(-) level in O-16 is particularly important to determine the cross section. The magnitude of gamma(11) is determined via sub-Coulomb a-transfer reactions or the beta-delayed a decay of N-16, but the latter approach is presently hampered by the lack of sufficiently precise data on the beta-decay branching ratios. Here we report improved branching ratios for the bound 1(-) level [b(beta,11) = (5.02 +/- 0.10) x 10(-2)] and for beta-delayed alpha emission [b(…

Squeezed Light Generation via Spatial Symmetry Breaking

2009

The spontaneous spatial symmetry breaking occurring in the transverse section of the light beam emitted by a degenerate optical parametric oscillator is shown to give rise to perfectly squeezed light. Such phenomenon occurs at any operating conditions, unlike conventional squeezing.

Perspectives of XUV sources development on LASERIX facility, ILE, and ELI

2009

In this paper we present the perspectives of the development of the XUV laser sources using High-power laser facilities. We focus our paper on the present statuts of the LASERIX facility and especially its role in the development of the XUV laser sources considering the French "Institut de la Lumiere Extreme" (ILE) and the potential European project Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI).

Long-term variability of the Be/X-ray binary EXO 2030+375

1998

We present a multi-wavelength study of the Be/X-ray binary system EXO 2030+375. We report that the Be companion is currently in a low-activity phase as indicated by the notable decrease of the infrared and optical emission. If this trend continues the source will lose its circumstellar envelope. Infrared spectroscopy in the IJHK bands is presented for the first time, along with optical and X-ray observations. These infrared spectra agree with the optical companion being an early-type (B0) main-sequence star. When active EXO 2030+375 shows an X-ray outburst at each periastron passage of the neutron star. In addition to the maximum X-ray luminosity displayed at orbital phase ∼0.0, we find a s…

Strong lowering of the mirrorless optical oscillation threshold by angular mismatches for nonlocal photorefractive nonlinearity.

2008

We show that the introduction of an angular mismatch for the pump waves results, in the case of nonlocal photorefractive nonlinearity, in a strong almost twofold decrease of the threshold value of the coupling strength for the mirrorless optical oscillation. This surprising feature will lead to a strong modification of the threshold and near-threshold behavior of a vast variety of optical oscillators based on the photorefractive phase conjugation and involving finite-size light beams.
