Using the fibre structure of paper to determine authenticity of the documents: analysis of transmitted light images of stamps and banknotes.
2014
A novel method is presented for distinguishing postal stamp forgeries and counterfeit banknotes from genuine samples. The method is based on analyzing differences in paper fibre networks. The main tool is a curvelet-based algorithm for measuring overall fibre orientation distribution and quantifying anisotropy. Using a couple of more appropriate parameters makes it possible to distinguish forgeries from genuine originals as concentrated point clouds in two- or three-dimensional parameter space.
Human Soul, Body and Life Horizons
2013
Phenomenology of life develops an essential transformation of the positioning of life, human being, soul and life horizons. Human soul reflects the passions of the earth and of the skies. There are two directions characteristic for the soul – upward and downward. Life horizons are closely connected with life forms, styles of living. It has been described in rather different cultures including post-modern culture. This paper deals with A.-T. Tymieniecka’s ideas about the New Enlightenment and critique of too narrow an explanation of human subjectivity and body and discusses the need for balance between soul’s directions and decreasing of materialistic, consumerism life form, orientations to …
Thermal Aggregation of Bovine Serum Albumin in Trehalose and Sucrose Aqueous Solutions
2012
We report results of static and dynamic light scattering measurements performed on bovine serum albumin (BSA) in saccharide (trehalose and sucrose) solutions. Our aim is to study the effects of the two disaccharides on the first steps of thermal aggregation of BSA in aqueous solutions at two protein concentrations (1 and 30 mg/mL) at increasing sugar/water ratio. Results show that sugars modify early stages of aggregation mainly by perturbing the thermodynamic behavior of the solvent (i.e., general solvent effects) without involving direct, specific sugar-protein interactions. This agrees with current hypotheses on sugar action in protein solutions. (1-3) The linear correlation detected bet…
Spatial analysis of plant metabolism: Sucrose imaging within Vicia faba cotyledons reveals specific developmental patterns
2002
During legume embryogenesis the differentiation of the cotyledons proceeds gradually in a wave-like manner. The process is metabolically and genetically controlled and regulated by sugars. In order to perform a spatial and temporal analysis of the sugar distribution pattern a new method was developed to specifically measure sucrose directly in tissues via bioluminescence and single photon counting. This enabled a quantitative sucrose imaging with a resolution close to the single cell level. The procedure was applied on sections of Vicia faba cotyledons covering the main stages of histodifferentiation. Young embryos before the storage phase contained moderate levels of sucrose, which were ev…
Light-driven proton transport of bacteriorhodopsin incorporated into long-term stable liposomes of a polymerizable sulfolipid
1983
Abstract The chromoprotein bacteriorhodopsin from Halobacterium halobium has been incorporated into liposomes made of a fully synthetic, polymerizable lipid. Bacteriorhodopsin is found to be active in these polymer liposomes. The advantage in the use of such polymer systems concerning long-term stability in comparison with liposomes made of natural lipid is demonstrated.
Tracing the ICME plasma with a MHD simulation
2021
The determination of the chemical composition of interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) plasma is an open issue. More specifically, it is not yet fully understood how remote sensing observations of the solar corona plasma during solar disturbances evolve into plasma properties measured in situ away from the Sun. The ambient conditions of the background interplanetary plasma are important for space weather because they influence the evolutions, arrival times, and geo-effectiveness of the disturbances. The Reverse In situ and MHD APproach (RIMAP) is a technique to reconstruct the heliosphere on the ecliptic plane (including the magnetic Parker spiral) directly from in situ measurements a…
Post-flare Ultraviolet Light Curves Explained with Thermal Instability of Loop Plasma
2012
In the present work, we study the C8 flare that occurred on 2000 September 26 at 19:49 UT and observed by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory/Solar Ultraviolet Measurement of Emitted Radiation spectrometer from the beginning of the impulsive phase to well beyond the disappearance in the X-rays. The emission first decayed progressively through equilibrium states until the plasma reached 2-3 MK. Then, a series of cooler lines, i.e., Ca X, Ca VII, Ne VI, O IV, and Si III (formed in the temperature range log T = 4.3-6.3 under equilibrium conditions), are emitted at the same time and all evolve in a similar way. Here, we show that the simultaneous emission of lines with such a different forma…
Long-range & Self-powered IoT Devices for Agriculture & Aquaponics Based on Multi-hop Topology
2019
This article presents the prototype design and testing of a long-range, self-powered IoT devices for use in precision agriculture and aquaponics. The devices are designed using the ultra-low power nRF52840 microcontroller with Bluetooth 5 support and ambient energy harvesting. A power of 942µW is harvested in an indoor environment. The devices are therefore suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, as natural sunlight will provide far more energy compared to artificial indoor lights. A line-of-sight range of up to 1.8km is achieved with the use of coded transmissions. However, the coverage area and range can be extended significantly by deploying the devices in multi-hop network topology. T…
Effects of reduced irradiance on hydraulic architecture and water relations of two olive clones with different growth potentials
2009
Abstract The hydraulic architecture and water relations of two olive genotypes, ‘Leccino Dwarf’ (LD) and ‘Leccino Minerva’ (LM) growing at two irradiance levels i.e. full sunlight irradiance (HI) and 50% sunlight irradiance (LI) were studied. The two clones showed similar plant hydraulic conductances (Kplant) and similar conductance of roots and leaves (Kroot and Kleaf) when growing at equal irradiance levels. However, both Kplant and Kroot were significantly lower in LI plants than in HI ones. On the contrary, Kleaf was unaffected by the light regime. One-year-old twigs of LI plants produced longer xylem conduits but lower average diameter of conduits and less conduits per unit xylem cross…
