Head and neck paragangliomas: Report of 175 patients (1989-2010)

Attention of the otorhinolaryngologist needs to be drawn to the versatile aspects of head and neck paragangliomas (PGLs).This study is a retrospective, nonrandomized clinical study of all 175 individuals with PGLs treated in our department between 1989 and 2010. A genetic analysis was performed on 86 patients.The 175 patients presented 224 head and neck PGLs as well as 2 thyroid papillary carcinomas. Genetic analysis resulted in 1 patient positive for a von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) gene mutation and 34 for succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) gene mutations (22 SDHD, 7 SDHC, and 5 SDHB), 12 of the latter carrying a novel mutation. Abstract Background The long-acting somatostatin analog lanreotide autogel is effective in the treatment of patients with neuroendocrine tumors. Objective To evaluate the long-term treatment response in patients with neuroendocrine tumors receiving lanreotide autogel in routine clinical practice. Aims: Erythrophagocytosis is a characteristic feature of tumour cells in malignant histiocytosis, some leukaemias, lymphomas, and also reactive histiocytes in the haemophagocytic syndrome associated with a variety of infections and neoplasms. It has also been found exceptionally in metastatic malignant epithelial cells in bone marrow and lymph nodes. Matrix metalloproteinases production in malignant pleural effusions after talc pleurodesis

SUMMARY In this study we have evaluated the modifications of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in malignant pleural fluids taken from patients suffering from lung cancer and treated with intrapleural talc instillation to induce pleurodesis. Furthermore, we have analysed the variations of some inflammatory mediators (C-reactive protein, α-1 antitrypsin) and of a protein (plasminogen) involved in MMP activation. In all patients the clinical improvement after talc pleurodesis was followed by a reduction in MMP-1, TIMP-1, C-reactive protein, α-1 antitrypsin and plasminogen activity. The gene MTS1 encodes p16INK4, an inhibitor of cyclin-dependent kinase 4, and is frequently deleted, mutated, or silenced by promoter methylation in melanoma cells and in the germline of familial melanoma patients. Intracranial teratomas are nongerminomatous germ cell tumors and they account for 0.3 to 0.9% of all intracranial tumors.
