Phantom/liminal fat and feminist theories of the body

This article brings together two concepts, ‘phantom fat’ and ‘liminal fat’, which both aim to grasp how fat in contemporary culture becomes a kind of material immateriality, corporeality in suspension. Comparing the spheres of representation and experience, we examine the challenges and usefulness of these concepts, and feminist fat studies perspectives more broadly, to feminist scholarship on the body. Introduction Body weight perception (BWP) is associated with health behaviors. Current evidence points to an increase over time in both actual and perceived weight status among adolescents, however there is limited evidence on time trends in BWP in cross-national samples of adolescents. Therefore, the aims of this study were to examine time trends in BWP between 2002 and 2018 among adolescents from 41 countries and regions, including gender and country differences and to explore the role of changes over time in country-level overweight/obesity prevalence in these trends. Tässä pro gradu –tutkielmassa haluttiin selvittää, havaitaanko yksilöiden tulotasossa poikkeamia, jos heillä on yksi tai kaksi haitallisen terveyskäyttäytymisen muotoa verrattuna yksilöihin, joilla näitä ei ole. Empiirisessä analyysissä hyödynnettiin kansainvälisen International Social Survey Programme –vertailututkimusohjelman (ISSP) Suomen osa-aineistoa vuodelta 2011. Economic Costs of Obesity in Europe

This chapter summarizes the evidence on the indirect costs of obesity that result from adverse labour market outcomes (i.e., earnings and employment losses) at the individual level. We focus on empirical evidence covering European countries emphasizing the most recent studies in this field. Research has established three key empirical observations. The first fact is that there is a negative link between excess weight and various labour market outcomes. Obesity is linked to significantly lower earnings, lower levels of employment and higher probability of entering sick leave or exiting from paid employment through disability pension. Sokerilla makeutettujen juomien kulutus on yhteydessä ylipainoon, liikalihavuuteen ja niihin liittyviin sairauksiin, kuten tyypin 2 diabetekseen. Sokerillisten juomien valmisteveroa pidetään tehokkaana keinona vähentää kulutusta ja parantaa väestön terveyttä. Koska virvoitusjuomien kulutukseen liittyy potentiaalisia markkinahäiriöitä, niiden verotuksella on mahdollista parantaa yhteiskunnallista kokonaishyvinvointia. Tammikuussa 2014 Suomi kaksinkertaisti virvoitusjuomien valmisteveron sokerillisten juomien osalta 0,11 eurosta 0,22 euroon litralta.
