How can design be socially engaged and politically efficient, as proposed by discourses labeled as critical design? This article introduces a conceptualization and historiography of politically charged design discourse based on philosopher Jacques Rancière’s work on the intersections of politics, aesthetics, and critical artistic practices. By focusing especially on Rancière’s reading of the genealogy of design from Ruskin to constructivism and the Bauhaus, the article aims to show that there is an important connection between design and politics present in Rancière’s thought. Communicative memory of irregular migration: The re-circulation of news images on YouTube

This article analyses user-generated YouTube cut and mix videos of irregular migration as producing communicative memory of those who have suffered at Europe’s external borders. Visual and textual analyses examine a neglected perspective on the study of media representations of migration by examining a particular practice through which people engage with news images and participate in (re)construction of collective memory in relation to irregular migration. Comparison of body segment models for female high jumpers utilising DXA images

In motion analysis of sport competitions, the question is often about the most convenient choice for defining the segment endpoints when no visible landmarks can be used. The purpose of the present study was to determine the location of the body centre of mass (CoM) of female high jumpers by using a high accuracy reaction board and two different segment models: Dempster, 1955, de Leva, 1996. Digitising the bony landmarks from the images of dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and overhead digital camera were used to compare the digitising accuracy. Although dancing often takes place in social contexts such as a club or party, previous study of such music-induced movement has focused mainly on individuals. The current study explores music-induced movement in a naturalistic dyadic context, focusing on the influence of personality, using five-factor model (FFM) traits, and trait empathy on participants’ responses to their partners. Fifty-four participants were recorded using motion capture while dancing to music excerpts alone and in dyads with three different partners, using a round-robin approach. Data-driven decision support (DDDS) provides insight for decision makers by exploring and extracting underlying patterns within a dataset. This thesis covers the process of DDDS in reducing driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) offenses by introducing proposed prison sentences. In this thesis, DDDS is applied to a DUI dataset by analyzing patterns in the dataset and by introducing proposed prison sentences for offenders to reduce the number of DUI cases. Revisiting Dubai's Business School Mania

We continue the ongoing dialogue in AMLE on business school hubs and addresses from Rogmans (2019, this issue) by evaluating the applicability of Dunning’s OLI advantages—Ownership (O), Location (L), Internalization (I)—in explaining Dubai’s emergence as a global education hub. Because business schools typically possess few transferable Ownership-advantages, Dunning’s OLI advantages theory appears simplistic and decontextualized when applied to the global business school field. This commentary contributes to existing research on business school hubs by providing some guiding points for future discussions seeking to develop a better understanding of international branch campuses. peerReviewed

Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassani selvitän ELY-keskusten liikuntatoimen viranhaltijoiden näkemyksiä aluehallintouudistuksen vaikutuksista alueellisen liikuntatoimen tilaan. Aluehallinnon uudistus käynnistettiin hallitusohjelmalla vuonna 2007. Uudistus toteutui ja uudet viranomaiset aloittivat toimintansa 1.1.2010. Uudistuksessa lakkautettiin vanha lääninhallitusjärjestelmä ja liikuntatoimet siirrettiin ELY-keskusten alaisuuteen. Sivistyshallinto pirstoutui, kun osa sen tehtävistä sijoitettiin aluehallintovirastoihin ja osa maakunnan liitoille. The creative class: do jobs follow people or do people follow jobs?

Data used are for labour market regions in Finland, Norway and Sweden from the 2000s. Creative class jobs follow people with high educational attainment (one way causation), but creative class jobs also follow other jobs and vice versa (circular causation).
