Walking, physical activity and life-space mobility among older people
2017
Autonomy in mobility is a central component of active ageing. Life-space mobility describes where, when, and how an individual reaches desired destinations. Walking, an important form of physical activity among older people, is a prerequisite for engaging in daily activities. This study explored the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between physical activity and life-space mobility. The associations of walking with reasons for going outdoors in different life-space areas, living arrangements, and environmental barriers to mobility were also examined. Data from two larger studies were used: the Life-Space Mobility in Old Age (LISPE) accelerometer substudy (n=174, median age 79.7…

The purpose of this study was to examine the values of movement and physical activity (MoPA) using government policy documents (e.g., laws and curricula) on early childhood education and care (ECEC) from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. This descriptive, comparative study was designed based on curriculum theory and used word count and content analyses to identify similarities and differences in the occurrence of MoPA in the ECEC policies of Nordic countries. Seven terms were identified as MoPA-related in Nordic policy documents. These terms occurred in various content contexts: development, environment, expression, health and well-being, learning and play, albeit sparsely. MoP…

2016
Tästä syystä liikettä sisältävä tilanne herättää mielenkiintoa selvittää tulkkauksen edellytyksiä tällaisessa tilanteessa: Millainen konteksti liikettä sisältävä vuorovaikutustilanne on viittomakielentulkkaukselle? Mitä keinoja tulkki käyttää saadakseen ja ylläpitääkseen katsekontaktin viittomakielisen osallistujan kanssa? Vastaan näihin kysymyksiin tarkastelemalla vuorovaikutust…

This study examines the meanings and prerequisites of self-organised physical activity from young people’s perspective. The theoretical framework is social space, which enables young people’s experiences to be interpreted in parallel with their physical, social, and cultural environment. Three research questions are addressed: (1) Where does young people’s self-organised physical activity take place? (2) What are the forms of the activity? (3) What meanings do young people associate with the spaces of the activity? The research data were collected within one municipality. The main data consist of 34 theme interviews with young people aged 12 to 16 years. The interviewees were selected mainl…

The low level of physical activity among young people has become a common societal concern. This study sought new information on the backgrounds of adolescents’ physical activity. The aim was to find out whether the adolescents’ subjective social status is related to physical activity. The data were collected as part of the follow-up research and evaluation of the Finnish Schools on the Move programme in 2012–2015. The data were collected through student surveys, measuring adolescents’ physical activity with accelerometers, and observing and interviewing secondary school students.
