The EM imaging reconstruction method in γ-ray astronomy

1998

Abstract The simpler imaging reconstruction methods used for γ-ray coded mask telescopes are based on correlation methods, very fast and simple-to-use but with limitations in the reconstructed image. To improve these results, other reconstruction methods have been developed, such as the maximum entropy methods or the Iterative Removal Of Sources (IROS). However, such kind of methods are slower and can be impracticable for very complex telescopes. In this paper we present an alternative image reconstruction method, based on an iterative maximum likelihood algorithm called the EM algorithm, easy to implement and that can be successfully used for not very complex coded mask systems, as is the …

Modelling of Magnetic Resonance Spectra Using Mixtures for Binned and Truncated Data

2007

Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) provides the biochemical composition of a tissue under study. This information is useful for the in-vivo diagnosis of brain tumours. Prior knowledge of the relative position of the organic compound contributions in the MRS suggests the development of a probabilistic mixture model and its EM-based Maximum Likelihood Estimation for binned and truncated data. Experiments for characterizing and classifying Short Time Echo (STE) spectra from brain tumours are reported.

Measurements of the Branching Fraction andCP-Violation Asymmetries inB0→f0(980)KS0

2005

The authors present measurements of the branching fraction and CP-violating asymmetries in the decay B{sup 0} {yields} f{sub 0}(980)K{sub S}{sup 0}. The results are obtained from a data sample of 123 x 10{sup 6} {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} decays. From a time-dependent maximum likelihood fit they measure the branching fraction {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} f{sub 0}(980)({yields}{Pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup 0})K{sup 0}) = (6.0 {+-} 0.9 {+-} 0.6 {+-} 1.2) x 10{sup -6}, the mixing-induced CP violation parameter S = 1.62{sub -0.51}{sup +0.56} {+-} 0.09 {+-} 0.04 and the direct CP violation parameter C = 0.27 {+-} 0.36 {+-} 0.10 {+-} 0.07, where the first errors are statistical, the second systematic and …

Measurement of theCPAsymmetry and Branching Fraction ofB0→ρ0K0

2007

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and time-dependent CP asymmetry of B^0 to rho^0 K^0. The results are obtained from a data sample of 227 10^6 Y4S to BB_ decays collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP2 asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. From a time-dependent maximum likelihood fit yielding 111+/-19 signal events we find B(B^0 to rho^0 K^0)=(4.9+/-0.8+/-0.9) 10^-6, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. We report the measurement of the CP parameters S=0.20+/-0.52+/-0.24 and C=0.64+/-0.41+/-0.20.

Partition function based analysis of cosmic microwave background maps

1999

We present an alternative method to analyse cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps. We base our analysis on the study of the partition function. This function is used to examine the CMB maps, making use of the different information embedded at different scales and moments. Using the partition function in a likelihood analysis in two dimensions (Qrms-PS, n), we find the best-fitting model to the best data available at present (the COBE–DMR 4 years data set). By means of this analysis we find a maximum in the likelihood function for n=1.8-0.65+0.35 and Qrms-PS = 10-2.5+3μ K (95 per cent confidence level) in agreement with the results of other similar analyses [Smoot et al. (1 yr), Bennet et a…

Space-time Point Processes semi-parametric estimation with predictive measure information

2014

In this paper, we provide a method to estimate the space-time intensity of a branching-type point process by mixing nonparametric and parametric approaches. The method accounts simultaneously for the estimation of the different model components, applying a forward predictive likelihood estimation approach to semi-parametric models.

Benchmarking parameter-free AMaLGaM on functions with and without noise.

2013

We describe a parameter-free estimation-of-distribution algorithm (EDA) called the adapted maximum-likelihood Gaussian model iterated density-estimation evolutionary algorithm (AMaLGaM-ID[Formula: see text]A, or AMaLGaM for short) for numerical optimization. AMaLGaM is benchmarked within the 2009 black box optimization benchmarking (BBOB) framework and compared to a variant with incremental model building (iAMaLGaM). We study the implications of factorizing the covariance matrix in the Gaussian distribution, to use only a few or no covariances. Further, AMaLGaM and iAMaLGaM are also evaluated on the noisy BBOB problems and we assess how well multiple evaluations per solution can average ou…

Approximate Bayesian Computation for Forecasting in Hydrological models

2018

Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) is a statistical tool for handling parameter inference in a range of challenging statistical problems, mostly characterized by an intractable likelihood function. In this paper, we focus on the application of ABC to hydrological models, not as a tool for parametric inference, but as a mechanism for generating probabilistic forecasts. This mechanism is referred as Approximate Bayesian Forecasting (ABF). The abcd water balance model is applied to a case study on Aipe river basin in Columbia to demonstrate the applicability of ABF. The predictivity of the ABF is compared with the predictivity of the MCMC algorithm. The results show that the ABF method as …

Empirical Likelihood Method for a Location Parameter Using Some Robust Estimators

2022

Phylogenetic relationship among genera of Polymorphidae (Acanthocephala), inferred from nuclear and mitochondrial gene sequences.

2013

Abstract Acanthocephalans of the family Polymorphidae Meyer, 1931 are obligate endoparasites with complex life cycles. These worms use vertebrates (marine mammals, fish-eating birds and waterfowl) as definitive hosts and invertebrates (amphipods, decapods and euphausiids) as intermediate hosts to complete their life cycle. Polymorphidae has a wordwide distribution, containing 12 genera, with approximately 127 species. The family is diagnosed by having a spinose trunk, bulbose proboscis, double-walled proboscis receptacle, and usually four to eight tubular cement glands. To conduct a phylogenetic analysis, in the current study sequences of the small (18S) and large-subunit (28S) ribosomal RN…
