Nonequilibrium magnetization dynamics of gadolinium studied by magnetic linear dichroism in time-resolved 4f core-level photoemission.
2008
The magnetic linear dichroism of the gadolinium 4f core level is studied in a time-resolved photoemission experiment employing laser pump- and synchrotron-radiation probe pulses. Upon optical excitation of the 5d6s valence electrons with femtosecond laser pulses, the magnetic order in the 4f spin system is reduced. Remarkably, the linear dichroism remains at 80% of the equilibrium contrast while the lattice temperature reaches the Curie temperature due to electron-phonon scattering. Contrasting itinerant ferromagnets, this shows that equilibration between the lattice and spin subsystems takes in Gd about 80 ps and is established in parallel with heat diffusion.
Spin structure and spin Hall magnetoresistance of epitaxial thin films of the insulating non-collinear antiferromagnet SmFeO3
2019
We report a combined study of imaging the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin structure and measuring the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in epitaxial thin films of the insulating non-collinear antiferromagnet SmFeO$_3$. X-ray magnetic linear dichroism photoemission electron microscopy measurements reveal that the AFM spins of the SmFeO$_3$(110) align in the plane of the film. Angularly dependent magnetoresistance measurements show that SmFeO$_3$/Ta bilayers exhibit a positive SMR, in contrast to the negative SMR expected in previously studied collinear AFMs. The SMR amplitude increases linearly with increasing external magnetic field at higher magnetic field, suggesting that field-induced canti…
Infrared spectroscopy on new multiphase thermoplastic elastomers based on hydrogen bond complexes - temperature dependence and orientation behaviour
1991
The structure and deformation behaviour of a new class of thermoplastic elastomers is studied by temperature dependent infrared (IR) spectroscopy and by IR - dichroism spectroscopy. The thermoplastic elastomer is based on polybutadiene with statistically distributed side groups which form an anisotropic supramolecular structure via hydrogen bonds. Changes in the IR spectra at elevated temperatures are related to the melting of the ordered structure. The uniaxial deformation behaviour is studied by linear dichroism Fourier-transform (FT)-IR spectroscopy. A deformation model is developed which accounts for the major experimental results: while the polybutadiene segments behave as flexible cha…
Symmetry of valence states of Heusler compounds explored by linear dichroism in hard-x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
2011
This study reports on the linear dichroism in angular-resolved photoemission from the valence band of the Heusler compounds ${\mathrm{NiTi}}_{0.9}{\mathrm{Sc}}_{0.1}\mathrm{Sn}$ and NiMnSb. High-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy was performed with an excitation energy of $h\ensuremath{\nu}=7.938\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{keV}$. The linear polarization of the photons was changed using an in-vacuum diamond phase retarder. The valence band spectra exhibit the typical structure expected from first-principles calculations of the electronic structure of these compounds. Noticeable linear dichroism is found in the valence band of both materials, and this allows for a symmetry analysis of the cont…
Isoindolo[2,1-a]quinoxaline derivatives, novel potent antitumor agents with dual inhibition of tubulin polymerization and topoisomerase I.
2008
Isoindoloquinoxalines 4 and 5 were obtained by refluxing 2-(2'-aminoaryl)-1-cyanoisoindoles 3a- e in acetic or formic acid. All derivatives were screened by the National Cancer Institute (Bethesda, MD) for the in vitro one dose primary anticancer assay against a 3-cell line panel. Compounds 4a- e, screened against a panel of about 60 human tumor cell lines, showed remarkable antineoplastic activity; they had GI 50 values in the low micromolar or submicromolar range and reached, in the case of 4c, nanomolar concentrations on 88% of the 59 tested cell lines. Flow cytometric analysis of cell cycle after treatment with 4c demonstrated an arrest of the cell cycle in G2/M phase. This effect was a…
DNA Binding Studies and Cytotoxicity of a Dinuclear PtII Diazapyrenium- Based Metallo-supramolecular Rectangular Box
2012
The interaction with native DNA of a 2,7-diazapyrenium-based ligand 1 and its Pt II rectangular metal- lacycle 2 is explored through circular and linear dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopies. The metal-free ligand 1 binds through intercalation, with a binding constant of approximately 5 10 5 m 1 , whereas the metallacycle 2 binds and bends the DNA with a bind- ing constant of 7 10 6 m 1 . PCR assays show that metallo-supramolecular box 2 interferes with DNA transactions in vitro whereas the intercalator 1 does not. The metallacycle is active against four human cancer cell lines, with IC50 values ranging between 3.1 and 19.2 mm and shows similar levels of efficacy, but a differen…
Magnetic Domain Imaging of Thin Metallic Layers Using PEEM
2001
Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) in combination with resonant excitation by circularly polarized soft X-rays has proven to be a powerful analytical tool for the study of magnetic microstructures and multilayers. In this type of electron microscope the lateral intensity distribution of the emitted low-energy secondary or photoelectrons is imaged by an electron-optical system. Owing to its fast parallel image acquisition, its wide zoom range allowing fields of view from almost 1 mm down to a few µm combined with a high base-resolution of the order of 20 nm, the method offers a unique access to many aspects in surface and thin film magnetism on the mesoscopic length scale. Magnetic con…
Statistical analysis of time resolved single molecule fluorescence data without time binning
2010
We depict two algorithms to calculate correlation functions from two different time resolved single molecule fluorescence experiments without the need of time binning. Our first procedure allows to calculate the reduced linear dichroism from polarization resolved fluorescence data. Since we process single photon counts instead of time binned data, considerably faster fluctuations of the dichroism can be analyzed than with conventional methods. With our second procedure time resolved fluorescence obtained with a time correlated single photon counting setup can be analyzed with respect to fluorescence lifetime fluctuations. Again this new algorithm processes single photon events making time b…
Linear Dichroism in Photoemission from Oriented Molecules
1993
It is shown that oriented molecules reveal both Linear Dichroism (LD) and Linear Dichroism in the Angular Distribution (LDAD) of photoelectrons, which means a difference between photoelectron currents ejected at a definite angle by linearly polarized light of two mutually perpendicular polarizations. Measurements of LD and LDAD enable one to investigate the orientation of molecules and to make an essential step towards the complete quantummechanical experiment. As an example, LDAD in a model case of oriented heteronuclear diatomic molecules is presented.
Angular and temperature dependence of the magnetic circular dichroism in4dcore-level photoemission from Gd(0001)
2002
We present experimental and theoretical results for the angular and temperature dependence of magnetic circular dichroism in Gd $4d$ core-level photoelectron emission from a Gd(0001) surface in both normal and off-normal directions and with azimuthal variation. Two theoretical approaches are used to model this data: a single electron theory with full multiple scattering of the outgoing photoelectron and a full-relativistic many-electron theory with single scattering only. Thermal effects due to atomic vibrations and the excitation of initial-state multiplets are also included. For normal emission, we find smooth free-atom-like angular variations in emission intensity, while for off-normal e…
