‘I don’t know the answer to that question’: a corpus-assisted discourse analysis of White House Press Briefings

White House Press Briefings, daily meetings with the press held by the White House Press Secretary, are the main information conduit for the White House (Kumar 2007). They are considered a “political chess game” where the Press Secretary and the press face a “wrestling match” (Partington 2006: 16). Our analysis is carried out on a corpus comprising all the Press Briefings across three presidencies from Clinton to Obama. The additional mark-up includes information about individual speakers and their role, allowing us to compare different discourse strategies adopted by the participants in the briefings at different points in time. About the Use of Tag Questions in Andean Spanish

This paper aims to describe the use of tag questions in the variety of Andean Spanish spoken in Bolivia. In particular, it explores the tag questions that occur in the Corpus oral del español hablado por bilingües de aymara-español. The analysis consists of two levels. On the one hand, it describes the pragmatic functions of tag questions and identifies the correlation between their distribution and their pragmatic functions. On the other hand, it focuses on the impact that social factors (the speakers’ sex, age, and education) have on the frequency of the tags. Yhä useammalla nuorella aikuisella on omakohtaisia kokemuksia englannin kielen käytöstä monikulttuurisessa ympäristössä, esimerkiksi vaihto-opiskelun tai vapaaehtoistyön kautta. The essay introduces a series of classical essays by Bruno Latour on design and techniques, showing the relationships between Actor Network Theory and semiotics. In particular, the theoretical convergences and problematic nodes on the methodological level concerning the application of certain semiotic notions, such as that of actant and that of enunciation, within Bruno Latour's anthropology are discussed.
