Alkoholinkäyttö EVI-hankkeeseen osallistuneilla keskisuomalaisilla

Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, miten Elintapasairauksien varhaistunnistaminen ja interventio (EVI) -hankkeeseen osallistuneiden keskisuomalaisten alkoholinkäyttö oli yhteydessä tutkittavien taustatekijöihin. Keskeisesti haluttiin tutkia alkoholikäytön useuden, kertakäyttömäärien sekä humalahakuisen käytön yhteyttä vastaajien sukupuoleen, ikään, koulutustaustaan ja työelämätilanteeseen sekä painoindeksiin ja vyötärönympärykseen. Tutkimuksella pyrittiin vastaamaan myös siihen, missä olosuhteissa alkoholia käytettiin eri taustatekijöiden mukaan sekä millaista oli tutkittavien alkoholiin liittyvien terveystottumusten muutoshalukkuus. Julkisen koulurakentamisen vallitseva trendi on tehdä suuria, satojen oppilaiden yhtenäiskouluja. Tavoitteena on tuottaa oppimista tukevia tiloja ja mahdollistaa oppilaille eheä oppipolku koko peruskoulun ajaksi. Keskustelussa esiintyy usein myös olettamia suurempien yksiköiden teknistaloudellisista skaalaeduista. Tässä tutkimuksessa analysoitiin yli 350 peruskouluyksikön otoksella, liittykö koulukoon kasvattamiseen skaalaetuja tilankäytön näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksen tulokset kyseenalaistavat käsityksen, että suurten koulujen oppilaskohtaiset tilakustannukset olisivat pääsääntöisesti pieniä kouluja edullisempia. peerReviewed

Computer aided scheduling and routing of vehicle-carrier fleet—a case study

This paper presents a case study of development of an information system for a large enterprise from vehicle-transport industry. A novel optimization model and algorithms developed to solve scheduling and routing of vehicle-carrier fleet are presented and discussed. Carried out qualitative experiments confirmed the usability of developed user-guided search paradigm and high performance of autonomous algorithmic solution search methods.

Tractional Motion Machines extend GPAC-generable functions

In late 17th century there appeared the Tractional Motion instruments, mechanical devices which plot the curves solving differential equations by the management of the tangent. In early 20th century Vannevar Bush’s Differential Analyzer got the same aim: in this paper we’ll compare the Differential Analyzer mathematical model (the Shannon’s General Purpose Analog Computer, or GPAC) with the Tractional Motion Machine potentials. Even if we will not arrive in defining the class of the functions generated by Tractional Motion Machines, we’ll see how this class will strictly extend the GPAC-generable functions.

Aims: The aims of this study were to explore time-based trends of socioeconomic differences in alcohol use and drunkenness in Finnish adolescents from 1990 to 2014 and to investigate the significance of two indicators in detecting socioeconomic differences in alcohol use and drunkenness. Methods: Data were retrieved from seven surveys conducted as part of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study in Finland from 1990 to 2014.
