Subclinical hypothyroidism and erectile dysfunction: The potential nexus

2020

Purpose: The aim of the study was to evaluate the link between subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and erectile dysfunction (ED). Materials and Methods: Seventy-two male patients aged 23–41 years with SCH compared with 25 healthy matched subjects were recruited, and they were divided into Group A: healthy controls (n = 25), Group B: patients with SCH with ED (n = 43), and Group C: patients with SCH without ED (n = 29). Thyroid function test and hormonal assay included total testosterone (TT), sex hormone-binding globulin, free androgen index, and prolactin (PRL) were measured; erectile function was assessed by the 5-item version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) question…

0102: Atherogenic lipid profile and lipid peroxide products of patients with rheumatoid arthritis

2016

IntroductionRheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic relapsing immune-inflammatory multisystem disease with predominant synovial proliferation and destruction of articular cartilage. Patients with RA have a higher riskof mortality related to increased risk of cardiovascular disease with atherogenic lipid profile. In recent years, oxidative stress in RA patients has received considerable attention and has been implicated as mediators of tissue damage and cardio-vascular disease in patients with RA.The aim of the present study was to assess the lipid profile and lipid peroxide products of patients with rheumatoid arthritis compared with healthy controls.Patients and MethodsThe study included 70…

2019

The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of frequency, thereby increasing training volume, of resistance training on body composition, inflammation markers, lipid and glycemic profile in healthy older individuals (age range 65-75 year). Ninety-two healthy participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups; performing strength training one- (EX1), two- (EX2), or three- (EX3) times-per-week and a non-training control (CON) group. Whole-body strength training was performed using 2-5 sets and 4-12 repetitions per exercise and 7-9 exercises per session. All training groups attended supervised resistance training for 6 months. Body composition was measured by dua…

PO-58 - Cardiovascular risk profile in survivors of adult cancer - results from the general population study.

2016

The advancements in cancer treatment and detection of early cancer have resulted in steady increase of adult cancer survivors over the years. However, due to the long term toxic effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is increasing in survivors. Identifying risk factors and interventions to reduce the excess burden of CVD in this vulnerable population is urgently needed. To investigate the cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs), inflammation and coagulation profile in cancer survivors from a large population-based study.Presence of CVRFs and laboratory markers have been compared in individuals with (n=1,359) and without (n=13,626) history of canc…

Hirsutism: investigation and management.

2019

In all hirsute women, a careful diagnostic evaluation should be performed, and the findings will largely influence the therapeutic decisions and the follow-up of the patients. An assay of serum 17-OH progesterone is needed, while the measurement of total testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin, with the calculation of free androgen index, are useful to assess androgen secretion. Other tests should be suggested only according to responses of specific clinical questions. Owing to their high cardiovascular and metabolic risk, patients with polycystic ovary syndrome should have an oral glucose-tolerance test and a complete lipid profile. No ideal treatment for hirsutism exists but, with c…

The consumption of a bread enriched with dietary fibre and l-carnitine improves glucose homoeostasis and insulin sensitivity in patients with metabol…

2015

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a bakery product enriched with dietary fibre and L-carnitine in countering glucose homoeostasis and insulin sensitivity in patients with and without MetS. This was a 12-week, double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial employing fifty-four subjects (28 with MetS and 26 without MetS). After one month (run-in period), subjects were divided into two intervention groups: one received dietary fibre (5.59 g of soluble fibre and 9.49 g of insoluble fibre) plus 2325 mg of L-carnitine enriched bread (n = 26) and the other received placebo bread (n = 28). Anthropometric measurements, biochemical parameters inflammatory markers and LDL subfra…

Effect of weight loss on C3 and C4 components of complement in obese patients

2011

Eur J Clin Invest 2012; 42 (5): 503–509 Abstract Background  Circulating C3 levels are elevated in obese patients, but how this factor is affected after weight loss through diet is a question that is yet unanswered. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of weight loss on lipid and hydrocarbonated metabolism parameters and on the levels of C3 and C4 components of complement in obese patients. Design  This is a longitudinal intervention study based on a 6-week very low-calorie diet (VLCD), a liquid formula of 603 kcal/day. A total of 131 middle-aged patients were distributed among grades II, III and IV of obesity. Anthropometric parameters, total cholesterol, triglyceri…

THE METABOLIC SYNDROME IN HYPERTENSION

2019

The metabolic syndrome (MS) is currently considered to be a cluster of metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors including blood pressure elevation. A higher risk to develop hypertension in MS subjects with high-normal blood pressure has been observed and, when hypertension is established, seems to be what confers a higher cardiovascular risk on top of the risk induced by blood pressure elevation. Therefore, assessment of MS components can result in clinical utility strategy to manage hypertension based on individual risk. The main mechanisms for blood pressure elevation include overactivity of the sympathetic and the reninangiotensin system, abnormal renal sodium handling, and endothelial …

Transdermal estrogens do not appear to modify the extent of lesional areas of aortic atherosclerosis in oophorectomized rabbits on a cholesterol-rich…

2000

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in older women in industrialised countries. It has been suggested that it is the cessation of estrogen production by the ovaries that puts postmenopausal women at increased risk of CVD. Estrogen therapy has demonstrated a protective effect against CVD and several reports suggest that diverse mechanisms may be involved. Oral estrogen appears to be associated with a better lipid profile than the use of transdermal estrogens; however, it is assumed that estrogens, oral and non-oral, have direct actions on the blood vessels that may exert an important role in cardiovascular disease prevention. To investigate the effect of transdermal es…

Human antiphospholipid antibodies induce TNFα in monocytes via Toll-like receptor 8

2009

The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is characterized by recurrent arterial and/or venous thromboses, pregnancy loss and the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL). One of the discussed mechanisms of this thrombotic activity in APS patients is attributed to TNFalpha secretion in monocytes after aPL stimulation. To investigate this mechanism in detail, we employed a monoclonal aPL and IgG fractions of APS patients for stimulation of human peripheral monocytes. Stimulation with this monoclonal aPL resulted in an increased expression and secretion of TNFalpha, caused by specific upregulation of TLR8 mRNA and protein expression levels. To confirm the specificity of this finding we could d…
