Inter-individual variation in response to resistance training in cardiometabolic health indicators.
2020
Resistance training (RT) may improve metabolic health; however, the extent of its effectiveness is constantly evaluated to assess improvements in the group means, thus obscuring the heterogeneous individual effects. This study investigated inter-individual variation in response to RT as reflected in metabolic health indicators and how age, sex, nutrition, and pre-training phenotypes are associated with such variabilities. Methods Previously collected data of men and women (39-73 years, 135 trained, 73 non-trained controls) were pooled for analysis. Measurements were taken twice before training to estimate individual day-to-day variations and measurement errors (n = 208). The individual resp…
Salivary composition in obese vs normal-weight subjects: towards a role in postprandial lipid metabolism?
2015
In the pathophysiological context of obesity, oral exposure to dietary fat can modulate lipid digestion and absorption but underlying in-mouth mechanisms have not been clearly identified. Therefore we tested the hypothesis that salivary components related to dietary fat sensitivity would differ according to BMI and postprandial lipid metabolism in young men. Saliva was collected from 9 normal-weight (BMI=22.3±0.5 kg/m2) and 9 non-morbid obese (BMI=31.7±0.3 kg/m2) men before a 8 h-postprandial metabolic exploration test involving the consumption of a 40 g fat-meal, in which obese subjects revealed a delayed postprandial lipid metabolism. Nine salivary characteristics (flow, protein content, …

2020
Alterations in Lipid and Carbohydrate Metabolism in Patients with Classic Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia due to 21-Hydroxylase Deficiency
2009
Background: Classic 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21HD) presents some traits of the metabolic syndrome. Aim: To characterize discrete alterations of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism in children and young adults with classic 21HD, which could predict early atherogenesis. Patients and Methods: Twenty-seven Caucasian patients with classic 21HD (4–31 years); 27 sex-, age- and BMI-matched controls. Clinical parameters, hormonal status and genotype were assessed in all patients. Lipid parameters, including relative (%) and absolute (mg/dl) small-dense low-density lipoproteins subfractions (sd-LDL) were measured in patients and controls. Oral …
Within subject variability of HDL-cholesterol in HIV-infected patients
2019
Background and objective: Within-subject variability of cardiovascular risk factors may influence the development of cardiovascular disease. We aimed to improve knowledge on HDL-cholesterol variability and its clinical significance in HIV-infected patients, a population at high risk of cardiovascular disease. Methods: This was a cohort study to quantify the variability of HDL-cholesterol between two consecutive visits and to determine factors associated with such variability, in a group of HIV-infected patients. Results: A total of 307 patients were included, mean ± standard deviation of their age was 45.1 ± 8.5 years, and 225 of them (73.3%) were male. The absolute difference (after squaring…
Higher doses of cabergoline further improve metabolic parameters in patients with prolactinoma regardless of the degree of reduction in prolactin lev…
2013
OBJECTIVE: Currently available studies that fully analyse the metabolic parameters in patients with prolactinoma are scarce and discordant. The aim of this study was to evaluate the metabolic effects of cabergoline (CAB) treatment in patients with newly diagnosed prolactinoma in relation to disease control and CAB dosage. DESIGN: This is a retrospective clinical-based therapy analysis. PATIENTS: Forty-three patients with prolactinoma (eight men, 35 women), aged 33·65 ± 11·23 years, were evaluated metabolically at baseline and after 12 months of CAB treatment. MEASUREMENTS: Body mass index (BMI), systolic and diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference (WC), lipid profile, haemoglobinA1c (…
Norursodeoxycholic acid versus placebo in the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, phase 2…
2019
Norursodeoxycholic acid is an orally administered side chain-shortened homologue of ursodeoxycholic acid that undergoes hepatic enrichment with hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antifibrotic activity. We assessed the efficacy of two doses of norursodeoxycholic acid versus placebo for the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. We did a multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised, phase 2 dose-finding clinical trial in tertiary referral hospitals and medical centres in Austria (n=6) and Germany (n=23) for patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with or without diabetes. Patients with a clinical diagnosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and serum alani…
Differential effects of the C1431T and Pro12Ala PPARgamma gene variants on plasma lipids and diabetes risk in an Asian population.
2004
We investigated the association of C1431T and Pro12Ala polymorphisms at the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) locus with plasma lipids and insulin resistance-related variables, according to diabetes status, in a large and representative Asian population from Singapore consisting of 2,730 Chinese, 740 Malays, and 568 Indians. Moreover, we estimated the diabetes risk and examined gene-nutrient interactions between these variants and the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acid to saturated fat (SFA) in determining body mass index (BMI) and fasting insulin. We found differential effects of these gene variants. The Pro12Ala polymorphism was more associated with plasma lipids and f…
A study of insulin resistance using the minimal model in nondiabetic familial combined hyperlipidemic patients.
1998
The presence of insulin resistance in 20 male nondiabetic patients with familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCH) and 20 controls of similar age and body mass index (BMI) was investigated using the minimal model method modified by the administration of insulin and an oral glucose tolerance test. The peripheral sensitivity of insulin, expressed as the insulin sensitivity index (Si), was 1.91 ± 1.05 and 2.86 ± 1.19 × 10−4 · min−1 · mU/L in FCH patients and controls, respectively (P < .01), and the corresponding value for the peripheral utilization of glucose independently of insulin (Sg) was 1.70 ± 1.13 in FCH patients and 2.35 ± 0.60 × 10−2 · min−1 in controls (P < .02). In the FCH group, the S…
Levels of C3 in patients with severe, morbid and extreme obesity: its relationship to insulin resistance and different cardiovascular risk factors.
2007
Increased C3 has been related to body mass index (BMI) and insulin resistance, although there are not sufficient studies in subjects with morbid obesity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the levels of C3 as a function of the BMI in subjects of both sexes, with severe, morbid and extreme obesity, and their possible relationship to insulin resistance or associated diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia. The study included a total of 316 patients (110 men and 206 women) with severe obesity (17.1%), morbid obesity (54.4%) and extreme obesity (28.4%), with an average BMI of 46.70+/-7.37 kg/m2.The glucose and insulin levels were determined baseline, and 2 h after a 75 g …
