Gelling and the collective dynamics in ferroelectric liquid crystals
2020
Dielectric spectroscopy has been applied to investigate the dynamic behaviour of a ferroelectric liquid crystal in the smectic C* and smectic A phases confined in gel matrices of a fibre like (1D) or platelet like (2D) structure. These gel matrices were obtained from semicarbazide or bis-acylurea derivatives, which self assemble because of their H-bonding motif. The confinement strongly influences the magnitude of the spontaneous polarization and the collective fluctuations of the director detected as the Goldstone-mode. It is thus possible to detect gelation by dielectric spectroscopy. By this method it was possible to follow the destruction and restoration of the gel structure induced by …
Gelation of smectic liquid crystal phases with photosensitive gel forming agents.
2020
This paper studies the potential of 3 newly synthesized low molecular weight gelling agents (2 of them with azo groups) with the semicarbazide group as a H-bonding motif to gel the smectic phase of a commercial chiral smectic C material. To detect gelation two methods were used: the stabilization of the director pattern, which measures the interaction of the physical gel network with the LC-director, and the suppression of the onset of electrohydrodynamic instabilities, which measures the increase of viscosity. Special emphasis was put on the influence of the photochemical - isomerization of the gelling agents on gelation. From the stabilization of the director pattern an elastic component c…
Development of predictive retention-activity relationship models of tricyclic antidepressants by micellar liquid chromatography.
1999
The distribution of tricyclic antidepressants from plasma to brain, where these drugs exert their main clinical action, and other organs is related to transport events across the cell membranes of the different tissues. It could be expected that all the molecular features that condition the transport processes (mainly hydrophobicity and molar total charge) also control the pharmacokinetic and biochemical behavior. Micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) has been proposed to emulate in vitro the partitioning process in the biomembranes. The use of micellar solutions of Brij35 as mobile phases in reversed-phase liquid chromatography has proven to be valid to predict the biological activities of …
Cloud and Fog Effects and Their Parameterisation in Regional Air Quality Models
1997
For the special purpose of cloud chemistry a tool ASOCC was developed which is able to generate a differential equation system from a given set of chemical kinetics equations. Sensitivity and structure analysis have been performed to evaluate the great number of investigated reactions in the liquid phase and to derive a condensed mechanism for use in regional chemistry-transport models.
Caratterizzazione del pattern lipidico e degli acidi grassi del muscolo dell’ibrido Acipenser naccarii (Bonaparte, 1836) x A. baerii (Brandt, 1869) e…
2002
Muscle phospholipids and tryglicerides were measured in two sturgeon (Acipenseridae) hybrids. Fatty acid composition of the two lipidic fractions showed a strong similarity between the two hybrids.
Extracellular vesicles in cancer pros and cons: The importance of the evidence-based medicine
2021
In this paper we want to introduce a hot topic for clinical and translational research in oncology and all the related medical fields: the "exosomology", i.e., the science that looks at exosomes as nanovesicular tools for theranostics. Exosomes are extracellular vesicles (EVs) of nanometric sizes actively secreted by normal and, above all, tumor cells. Among the EVs, exosomes are surely the most investigated and with the most promising results, mainly for what concerns their potential as representing the future of the so-called "liquid biopsy". Unfortunately, the huge and increasing amount of data coming from preclinical studies was not followed by an adequate number of clinical investigati…
Oxidized graphene in ionic liquids for assembling chemically modified electrodes: a structural and electrochemical characterization study
2012
Dispersions of graphene oxide (GO) nanoribbons in ionic liquids, ILs (either 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIM-Cl-) or 1-butylpyridinium chloride (-Bupy-Cl-)) have been used to assemble modified screen printed electrodes (SPEs). The graphene oxide/ionic liquid dispersions have been morphologically and structurally characterized by the use of several techniques: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, high-resolution-transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The assembled modified SPEs have then been challenged with various compounds and compared to several electro-active targets. In all cases high peak currents were detected, as wel…

LIQUIDI IONICI E FULLERENI: PIATTAFORME PER NUOVI MATERIALI
The synthesis of innovative catalysts based on different carbon nanoforms (CNFs), namely fullerene C60 and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and their application in Suzuki and Heck C-C coupling reactions, constitutes the common thread of the first part (Chapter 1 and 2) of this thesis. C60 and CNTs were functionalized with ionic liquids (ILs) and poly-amidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers, respectively, and used as supports for palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs). Moreover, additional supported catalytic systems based on one of the synthesized C60-IL hybrids were prepared and successfully employed in the title coupling reactions. The final part (Chapter 3) of the thesis deals on the microwave-mediated synthesi…
