Whisky can be described as a complex matrix integrating the chemical history from the fermented cereals, the wooden barrels, the specific distillery processes, aging, and environmental factors. In this study, using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) and liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), we analyzed 150 whisky samples from 49 different distilleries, 7 countries, and ranging from 1 day new make spirit to 43 years of maturation with different types of barrel. Chemometrics revealed the unexpected impact of the wood history on the distillate's composition during barrel aging, regardless of the whisky origin. Flavonols, ol…

18:2Δ 9c,12t and 18:2 Δ9t,12c are present in our diet, as result of heat treatment of vegetable oils. A nutritional study was carried out in order to obtain more precise information on the conversion of these two isomers into long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) by rat tissues. This in vivo study performed using rat fed with small quantities of mono trans linoleic acid isomers (0.6% of total energy) showed that 18:2 Δ9c,12t was converted into 20:4 Δ5c,8c,11c,14t while 18:2 Δ9t,12c was only slightly converted into 20:4 Δ5c,8c,11t,14c. Furthermore 18:2 Δ9t,12c was preferentially elongated into 20:2 Δ11t,14c. Each C20 metabolite of these mono trans 18:2 isomers was isolated as methyl …

Phase Equilibria in the Binary and Ternary Systems Composed of Diethyl Ketone, 2-Pentanone, and 3-Pentanol at 101.3 kPa

2003

New vapor−liquid equilibrium data for the binary systems diethyl ketone + 2-pentanone, diethyl ketone + 3-pentanol and 2-pentanone + 3-pentanol and for the diethyl ketone + 2-pentanone + 3-pentanol ternary system are reported at 101.3 kPa. The data were found to be thermodynamically consistent according to the Van Ness−Byer−Gibbs method for the binary systems and according to the McDermott−Ellis method for the ternary one. The experimental results show that the diethyl ketone + 2-pentanone system is well represented by assuming ideal behavior. The other binary systems exhibit slight positive deviations from ideality, and no azeotrope is present. The VLE data have been correlated with the Wi…

Reversible Digital And Holographic Optical Storafe In Polymeric Liquid Crystals (PLC)

1987

A new reversible optical storage technique based on azo dye containing liquid crystalline polymers and copolymers is described. Monodomain films of the polymers were used as storage medium. Digital and holographic information was stored and reconstructed. The stored information can be erased and the writing process is repeatable. The storage process is explained in terms of a transcis isomerization of the mesogen inducing local director field distortions.

Silanol suppressing potency of alkyl-imidazolium ionic liquids on C18 stationary phases

2011

Residual silanols on C18 columns yield undesirable slow-kinetics ion-exchange interactions with positively charged basic compounds that result in asymmetrical peaks, low efficiencies and long retention times. The purity of the silica employed as supporting material, and the technique used to form the bonded phase, which varies with the brand and manufacturer, give rise to different amounts of residual silanols in the packings, and consequently, different chromatographic performance. One of the most efficient and widespread strategies to reduce or even eliminate the different performance among columns is the addition of a reagent to the mobile phase to block the silanol sites. However, the i…

The ultrasounds-ionic liquids synergy on the copper catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition between phenyl acetylene and 4-azidoquinoline

2015

Abstract The effect of ultrasound irradiation on the copper catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition between phenylacetylene and 4-azidoquinoline has been studied in solution of different ionic liquids. In particular, we used ionic liquids featuring both aliphatic and aromatic mono- and dications, as well as anions differing in size, symmetry and coordination ability. We also examined the influence of the ionic liquids structural features on the reaction outcomes, finding that under magnetic stirring reactivity is favorably affected by the solvent structural organization, while under sonochemical conditions an opposite trend was observed. In all cases examined, sonochemical activation leads to …

Liquid Crystalline Elastomers—Characterization as Networks

1994

Abstract This paper summarises the properties of archiral and chiral liquid crystalline (LC) elastomers, the latter of which have found interest due to their piezoelectric properties. In addition the formation of new LC elastomers by a radical polymerization of acrylate groups covalently linked to LC polymers was investigated. This was done concerning the progress of the crosslinking reaction, concerning the influence of the crosslinking on the LC phases and concerning the network properties (swelling ratio and elastic modulus) of the resulting elastomers. It turns out that the networks prepared in this way are very soft and their crosslinking density is low. This can be explained assuming …

Cyclodextrins in polymer synthesis: Influence of methylated β-cyclodextrin as host on the free radical copolymerization reactivity ratios of hydropho…

2001

Methylated (β-cyclodextrin (me-β-CD) was used to complex the hydrophobic monomers n-butyl acrylate (1), n-hexyl acrylate (2) and cyclohexyl acrylate (3) yielding the corresponding water soluble host/guest complexes 1a–3a. The complexes were copolymerized in water by free radical mechanism and the reactivity ratios were determined by measuring the monomer consumption by HPLC. The following reactivity ratios were found: copolymerization of 1a and 2a: r1= 1.01 ± 0.01; r2= 1.04 ± 0.01; copolymerization of 3a and 2a: r1= 0.74; r2= 1.28; copolymerization of 3a and 1a: r1= 0.75 ± 0.04; r2= 1.13 ± 0.01. In contrast to that, the copolymerization of the uncomplexed monomers 1–3 in organic medium (DMF…
