Abstract Micellar liquid chromatography of proteic primary amino acids with pre-column derivatization with o-phthalaldehyde (OPA) and N-acetyl-L-cysteine was studied, using mobile phases containing a short-chain alcohol. The modification of pH gave a large variation of the retention as a result of the protonation of the carboxylate group of amino acids. Maximum resolution and adequate retentions were achieved with a 0.05 M sodium dodecyl sulphate/3% propanol mobile phase at pH 3. The reproducibility was lower than 1.0% at a 1 × 10−4 M concentration level and between 0.6 and 2.2% for 1 × 10−6 M. A method using HPLC analysis has been used to compare the level of resveratrol and its derivatives, piceid, pterostilbene and epsilon-viniferin, in grapevine berries of three Vitis vinifera varieties. The concentration of these compounds has been evaluated in healthy and Botrytis cinerea infected grape clusters, both in natural vineyard conditions and in response to UV elicitation.

The fiber patterns of a series of liquid crystalline polymers were analysed. For polymers with smectic phases and for polymers with long spacers and nematic phases, the mesogenic groups orient perpendicularly to the polymer main chains which are parallel to the fiber axis. The fiber pattern indicate a short range order of the mesogenic groups analogous to that in low-molecular weight liquid crystals. For polymers with short spacer groups and nematic phases qualitatively different fiber patterns are found. These fiber patterns are indicative for a special nematic phase formed by ribbon-like molecules.

LC-Polymers with Axial Chirality

Abstract Liquid crystalline polymers with axial chirality are prepared. These polymers are chiral, not due to a single asymmetric carbon atom, but due to a larger molecular fragment, which is chiral as a whole. They exhibit cholesteric and chiral smectic C* phases. Dielectric spectroscopy proves strong ferroelectric properties in the chiral smectic C* phases of these polymers.

Pattern-recognising Polymer Adsorption on Structured Surfaces: Gaussian Polymers vs. Freely Jointed Chains

Abstract Selective adsorption of homopolymers is exploited as a model for pattern recognition. To this end the strong adsorption regime of Gaussian polymers adsorbed on a regularly structured surface is investigated for square and triangular lattices within a discrete Edwards model. The equilibrium behaviour of the specific heat, the gyration tensor and the (nematic) bond order tensor are analysed and compared to the properties for adsorbed freely jointed polymer chains.

Covalently crosslinked liquid crystalline networks with elastic properties were prepared in isotropic solution from linear liquid crystalline polymers. As linear precursors for the networks were used: (i) polymers with the mesogenic groups in the side groups (polyacrylates and polymethacrylates), (ii) polymers with the mesogenic groups in the main chain (polymalonates) and (iii) polymers with the mesogenic groups in main chain and side groups (“combined liquid crystalline polymers”). In all crosslinked polymers the liquid crystalline phases of the linear polymers are retained. For low degrees of crosslinking (≤2 mol-%) the phase transition temperatures remain nearly unchanged. Competition between liquid-crystalline ordering and glassy freezing in melts of semiflexible polymers: A monte carlo simulation

We present results of a Monte Carlo simulation of dense melts of semiflexible polymers using the bond-fluctuation model. The chosen Hamiltonian increases the chain stiffness upon cooling which in turn leads to glass-transition like freezing of the polymer mobility. Employing an efficient simulation algorithm, which is able to equilibrate the simulated systems to lower temperature than the Rouse-type algorithm showing the glassy freezing, we are able to observe an isotropic-nematic phase transition. This transition lies above the glass transition temperature one would extrapolate from the observed freezing behavior.

Adsorption and structure formation of semiflexible polymers on spherical surfaces

Abstract Rigid spheres with a short-range attractive potential are taken as a coarse-grained model of vesicles, which contain a solution of semiflexible polymers in their interior. Assuming good solvent conditions with an implicit description of the solvent, effective monomers experience bond-length and bond-angle potentials as well as excluded-volume interaction. Due to the attractive vesicle surface, phase separation occurs between a thin shell of adsorbed monomers at the surface and a rather dilute, and therefore, disordered polymer solution in the sphere interior.
