Design and Characterization of a Miniature Hydraulic Power Supply for High-Bandwidth Control of Soft Robotics
2020
Soft robotics holds enormous promise for a wide class of applications. However, system controllability, bandwidth, portability, and energy efficiency of soft robot power supplies are often inadequate. Soft robotics desperately needs improved solutions to drive soft actuators either pneumatically or hydraulically. This research paper offers a contribution to bridge this gap. It deals with small-scale power supplies for hydraulically-driven soft robots based on fluidic elastomer actuators in the power range 5-400 W. A design procedure for such power supplies is developed with an emphasis on high-bandwidth control. The performance requirements are established based on a literature survey, and …
Metal speciation in solid matrices
1994
The literature on metal ion speciation in solid matrices is reviewed, taking into account its applications in the analysis of soil, sediment, biological materials, foodstuff and other solid samples. The pretreatment methods of various solid materials required for carrying out speciation studies have been highlighted. The basis of the methods of separation of different species from matrices, such as sequential extraction, selective extraction, etc. is discussed. The instrumental techniques used for the characterization of different chemical species in solid matrices have been mentioned. The literature survey reveals the analytical details of the developed methodologies, and these have been e…
Supercritical fluid chromatography in drug analysis: A literature survey
1996
The applications of supercritical fluid chromatography to the analysis of drugs have been carefully revised from the literature compiled in the Analytical Abstracts until March 1994. Easy-to-read tables provide useful information about the state-of-the-art and possibilities offered by SFC in pharmaceutical analysis. The tables comprise extensive data about samples analyzed, pharmaceutical principles determined, solvents used and sample quantity injected, supercritical fluids and modifiers employed, injection system, instrumentation, experimental conditions for chromatographic separations (density, pressure, flow, temperature), characteristics of columns employed (type, support, length, diam…
A Survey of Active Learning for Quantifying Vegetation Traits from Terrestrial Earth Observation Data
2021
The current exponential increase of spatiotemporally explicit data streams from satellite-based Earth observation missions offers promising opportunities for global vegetation monitoring. Intelligent sampling through active learning (AL) heuristics provides a pathway for fast inference of essential vegetation variables by means of hybrid retrieval approaches, i.e., machine learning regression algorithms trained by radiative transfer model (RTM) simulations. In this study we summarize AL theory and perform a brief systematic literature survey about AL heuristics used in the context of Earth observation regression problems over terrestrial targets. Across all relevant studies it appeared that…
The Impact of Corporate Board Characteristics on Firm Value: A Literature Survey
2018
This chapter provides a review of theoretical and empirical studies that analyze the effects of board characteristics on firm performance. It serves the purpose of demonstrating different approaches to studying corporate board characteristics as well as the importance of examining these characteristics, namely, board size, board independence, board leadership, gender diversity, board busyness and staggered boards.
Defining an Internet-of-Things Ecosystem
2012
By bringing the Internet connectivity to the things, the Internet-of-Things (IoT) promises a number of benefits to its customers, varying from faster and more accurate sensing of our environment, to more cost-efficient tracking of industrial processes. Likewise, from the business perspective, the wide adoption of IoT is expected to generate significant revenues to the providers of IoT application and services. The IoT adoption depends on whether the ecosystems of the companies focusing on IoT technologies would emerge and succeed in delivering to the market the solutions attractive to the customers. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to understand the essence and constituents of IoT ecos…
ICMM-a maturity model for software inspections
2010
Software inspection is widely acknowledged as an important method in software engineering. However, there is a need to better understand how to implement and improve inspection practices. This paper introduces Inspection Capability Maturity Model (ICMM), which provides support for assessment and improvement of software inspection practices in a software organization. The model has been developed iteratively based on a comprehensive literature survey and experiences from eight case organizations. This paper includes a detailed description of the used followed research process, the structure of ICMM and the rationale for the defined criteria. Additionally, the role of this kind of model in in…
What is socio-ecological research delivering? A literature survey across 25 international LTSER platforms
2018
[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]QUASARE [ADD1_IRSTEA]Systèmes aquatiques soumis à des pressions multiples; International audience; With an overarching goal of addressing global and regional sustainability challenges, Long Term Socio-Ecological Research Platforms (LTSER) aim to conduct place-based research, to collect and synthesize both environmental and socio-economic data, and to involve a broader stakeholder pool to set the research agenda. To date there have been few studies examining the output from LTSER platforms. In this study we enquire if the socio-ecological research from 25 self-selected LTSER platforms of the International Long-Term Ecological Research (ILTER) network has …
Terminology for contrast-enhanced sonography: a practical glossary.
2007
Objective. The purpose of this glossary is to offer an updated guide to the correct terminology for contrast-enhanced sonography. Methods. This report was prepared by a panel of radiologists from the Sonography Section of the Italian Association of Medical Radiology. A leading author prepared a list of terms based on a comprehensive literature survey. The draft was analyzed by 3 experts on the topic of contrast-enhanced sonography. These reviewers reached a consensus and prepared the final version. Results. A list of 137 terms is included. These terms are briefly defined. Their proper application is discussed, with special reference to potential misleading uses. Conclusions. Contrast-enhanc…
Past, present and future of mountain species of the French Massif Central - the case ofSoldanella alpinaL. subsp.alpina(Primulaceae) and a review of …
2012
Aim Our goals were: (1) to investigate patterns of genetic variation in the French Massif Central (MC) of Soldanella alpina (Primulaceae), an alpine plant species that has only one known population in the region; (2) to analyse these patterns in order to deduce the Quaternary history of the population and to predict how current climatic warming may affect it; and (3) to review molecular analyses from the MC to evaluate the importance of the region for the conservation of genetic diversity. Location Europe, with a special focus on the French Massif Central and adjacent regions. Methods Amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) were analysed for 192 individuals (nine populations) of …
