Narrating Environmental Citizenship. Norwegian picturebooks and comics in the Anthropocene

2023

In my project, I examine how aspects of “environmental citizenship” are discussed in Norwegian picturebooks and comics. The term “environmental citizenship” encompasses several concepts that originate from political sciences and discuss what it can mean to be a responsible, or “good”, citizen with regard to the environment. The concepts are characterised by various understandings of what citizenship means and which role the environment and its intrinsic value play. Common for the concepts is an argument for the need to change something in our behaviour towards the world we live in. An econarratological perspective: I examine seven multimodal texts in my dissertation, four picturebooks and t…

The effect of ash and needle cover on surface runoff and erosion in the immediate post-fire period

2008

Abstract Hillslopes are thought to be most susceptible to enhanced surface runoff and erosion immediately following wildfire due to removal of protective vegetation and litter cover, and in many cases a fire-induced reduction in soil wettability. This enhanced susceptibility declines as vegetation and litter layer recover. For logistical reasons, however, few studies have been able to examine the responses of burnt terrain immediately following burning and little is therefore known about the effect of the wettable ash layer that often covers the ground until it is redistributed or removed by wind or water erosion. Here we quantify the effects of ash and needle cast ground cover on surface r…

Relationship between Fertility Traits and Kinematics in Clusters of Boar Ejaculates

2021

The aim was to determine the relationship between kinematic parameters of boar spermatozoa and fertility rates of sow, as well as to assess the effect of sperm clusters on the fertility capacity of the ejaculate. Semen samples were collected from 11 sexually mature boars. Samples were analyzed by an ISAS®v1 CASA-Mot system for eight kinematic parameters. Ejaculate clusters were characterized using multivariate procedures, such as principal factors (PFs) analysis and clustering methods (the k-means model). Four different ejaculate clusters were identified from two kinematic PFs which involved linear trajectory and velocity. There were differences (p 0.05) between dam lines and ejaculate clus…

Fedre og farskap i Sigrid Undsets trilogi Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-22)

2020

Master's thesis in Advanced teacher education level 8-13 (NO505) In this thesis, I have examined fathers and fatherhood in Sigrid Undset’s trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-22). The aim of the study has been to make an examination of the extent of the themes of fatherhood in the trilogy. The most central aspect in the survey is the literary analyses of the various fathers. The analytical work is based upon a wide sample of fathers. In addition, the thesis includes four parameters of care and consideration by which the fathers have been analysed. Based on these parameters, the concepts of care and consideration can be operationalized in the literary analyses. This also makes it possible to…

Random bit generation through polarization chaos in nonlinear optical fibers

2017

Nowadays, cryptographic applications are becoming of paramount importance in order to guarantee ultimately secure communications. Performances of classical and quantum key distribution and encryption algorithms are strongly dependent on the used Random Number Generator (RNG). A good RNG must produce unpredictable, unreproducible and unbiased sequences of numbers. For this reason, many true random number generators relying on chaotic physical phenomena, such as chaotic oscillations of high-bandwidth lasers [1, 2] or polarization chaos from a VCSEL diode [3], have been developed. In this work, we propose a RNG implementation based on a different physical mechanism than the ones previously use…

CO2 flux measurements in volcanic areas using the dynamic concentration method: the influence of the soil permeability.

2006

In order to evaluate the influence of soil permeability on soil CO2 flux measurements performed with the dynamic concentration method, several tests were carried out using soils characterized by different permeability values and flow rates. A special device was assembled in the laboratory to create a one-dimensional gas flow through a soil of known permeability. Using the advective-diffusion theory, a physical model to predict soil concentration gradients was also developed. The calculated values of CO2 concentrations at different depths were compared with those measured during the tests and a good agreement was found. Four soils with different gas permeability (3.6 x 10(-2) to 1.23 x 10(2)…

Three-dimensional level-curve scanning based on intersection of laser lines

2005

A dimensional measurement system that also tracks object movements is presented here. The method directly yields the level curves of an object. It is an extension of collimation methods, coupled with the use of structured lighting with features formed from several luminous planes intersecting in a single line. This line defines a set of points of the space at a fixed distance Z 0 from the measuring head. The locus of the points of the object where the lighting is reduced to a single line is the level curve sought. The introduction of an asymmetry into the lighting structure permits one to determine the direction as well as an approximate value of the value of the distance to the level curve…

Quantum repeater based on cavity-QED evolutions and coherent light

2016

In the framework of cavity QED, we propose a quantum repeater scheme that uses coherent light and chains of atoms coupled to optical cavities. In contrast to conventional repeater schemes, we avoid the usage of two-qubit quantum logical gates by exploiting solely the cavity QED evolution. In our previous paper [D. Gonta and P. van Loock: Phys. Rev. A 88, 052308 (2013)], we already proposed a quantum repeater in which the entanglement between two neighboring repeater nodes was distributed using controlled displacements of input coherent light, while the produced low-fidelity entangled pairs were purified using ancillary (four-partite) entangled states. In this paper, the entanglement distrib…
