Bound by society: Social identity in A Room with a View and The Rainbow

2021

Master´s thesis in English (EN501) The thesis presents a reading of the modernist novels The Rainbow (1915) by D.H. Lawrence and A Room with a View (1908) by E.M. Forster with a view at highlighting the factors that contribute to the formation of characters’ social identity. The analysis is founded on the theoretical background of social identity theory with special focus on aspects such as intergroup vs interpersonal interaction, self-categorization and gender schema theory. The thesis attempts to examine how the influencing factors affect selected characters on their journey towards self-discovery and self-categorization, and whether these forces ultimately lead them into a feeling of bel…

Climate Change Literature in the English Subject Classroom : Discussing how English teachers can use Young Adult Climate Fiction to teach about susta…

2020

Master´s thesis in English (EN501) This thesis explores the Young Adult DystopiaThe Sandcastle Empireby Kayla Olson and the Young Adult Climate FictionsThe Final Six and The Life Belowby Alexandra Monir and their different depictions of a future world affected by climate change. Intending to figure out how an English teacher in a Norwegian classroom may use these novels, the thesis discusses the criticism of capitalism, scientific innovation, and parental responsibilities given to the teenage protagonists. The thesis does this through an ecocritical lens and focuses on the characteristics of Anthropocene and Climate Fiction. Simultaneously, the thesis examines how the novels may affect the …

Recovery of macroinvertebrate communities from stream habitat restoration

1998

1. Many streams channelized for timber floating in Finland are now being restored to their original condition. The most frequently used restoration structures are boulder dams, flow deflectors, excavations and channel enlargements. By increasing substrate heterogeneity and leaf litter retention, restoration may enhance the formation of detritivore-dominated macroinvertebrate assemblages. In this study, macroinvertebrate communities in streams with differing recovery periods (from 0 to 16 years) from restoration, were compared with those in channelized and near-pristine streams. 2. Water depth and current velocity were lower, and relative bed roughness higher in restored than in dredged chan…

Ekfrasen som begivenhet

2021

Multiservice Optical Fibre Local Area Networks For Data Transmission And Telemetry In The Electric Power Industry

1986

The paper contains a review of a few of experimental optical fibre multiservice and multibranch local area networks /LANs/. Systems accomplish transmission, distribution and processing of analog or digital signals from numerous sources or measurement terminals. The authors put stress also on the possibility of combining transmission properties of fiber optic networks with fibre optic sensors. Several construction problems and chosen properties of multiport /multiterminal/ optical buses /networks/ have been considered. All examination systems of optical fibre LANs are discussed in respect of application them as telemetric, transmission, telesignaling and telecontrol systems for the power ele…

<title>Fiber optical intensity-ratio refractometer with digital display</title>

1994

Simplicity, cost efficiency, and higher fidelity compared to the single-channel design are the main advantages stimulating the recent interest on fiber optic intensity-ratio sensors. Optical and electronic designs of refractometric sensors of this kind are discussed here. Two optical schemes of retroreflective probes with one input and two output fibers are proposed. The probe sensitivity to liquid refractivity changes in the interval 1.33 < n < 1.41 is studied by computer simulation. An originally developed one-ADC-based signal processing circuit providing digital display of the intensity-ratio determined n-values is described as well.

Unravelling the importance of forest age stand and forest structure driving microbiological soil properties, enzymatic activities and soil nutrients …

2016

This study aimed to investigate the effects that stand age and forest structure have on microbiological soil properties, enzymatic activities and nutrient content. Thirty forest compartments were randomly selected at the Palancares y Agregados managed forest area (Spain), supporting forest stands of five ages; from 100 to 80years old to compartments with trees that were 19-1years old. Forest area ranging from 80 to 120years old and without forest intervention was selected as the control. We measured different soil enzymatic activities, soil respiration and nutrient content (P, K, Na, Mg, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb and Ca) in the top cm of 10 mineral soils in each compartment. Results sh…

Comparing soil inventory with modelling: Carbon balance in central European forest soils varies among forest types

2018

Abstract Forest soils represent a large carbon pool and already small changes in this pool may have an important effect on the global carbon cycle. To predict the future development of the soil organic carbon (SOC) pool, well-validated models are needed. We applied the litter and soil carbon model Yasso15 to 1838 plots of the German national forest soil inventory (NFSI) for the period between 1985 and 2014 to enables a direct comparison to the NFSI measurements. In addition, to provide data for the German Greenhouse Gas Inventory, we simulated the development of SOC with Yasso15 applying a climate projection based on the RCP8.5 scenario. The initial model-calculated SOC stocks were adjusted…

Chloroanisoles in soils and earthworms

1993

One important group of metabolites of chlorophenols in Finnish soils is their methylation products, i.e. chloroanisoles. Bioaccumulation of chloroanisoles into the biomass of earthworms was studied both in laboratory and by taking earthworm samples from contaminated soils. Concentrations of these compounds in the soils were also analysed. In the laboratory experiment, concentrations of 2,3,4,6-tetrachloroanisole (2346-TeCA) and pentachloroanisole (PeCA) were high in earthworms 1 week after introduction (approx. 50 μ/g fat). Later on, the concentrations decreased to a low level at a considerable rate, bcth in soil and in earthworms. The higher the concentration of chloroanisoles in the soil …
