The Transtextuality of Cline’s Ready Player One Comparative Analysis into the Effect of Transtextuality, and the Subsequent Emancipation of its Reade…
2020
Master´s thesis in English (EN500) This analysis looks into the history behind the concept of transtextuality as articulated by Genette, and its implications to the notion of there being a correct way to read. Arguably, Barthes’ Death of the Author gave increased agency on behalf of the reader, but this came at the detriment of authorial intent. Transtextuality often contain significance, which has the potential to destroy any notion of fixed meaning in any given text. In light if this, the following analysis investigated the plural ways in which Cline’s novel can be said to contain meaning. This analysis does not attempt to be exhaustive, and merely aims at demonstrating the ramifications …
Parental Strategies and Embodied Hope of Children in Post-Apocalyptic Works The Road and Bird Box: A study of Literary and Film Adaptation Strategies
2020
Master´s thesis in English (EN500) This thesis investigates alternate parental strategies in Post-Apocalyptic fiction by examining the core family units in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road and Josh Malerman’s Bird Box. Additionally, I will analyse their respective film adaptations directed by John Hillcoat and Susanne Bier, to conduct a comparative analysis of the story’s literary and visual depiction. To aid the literary and adaptation investigation, I will utilize selected concepts of Bowenian theory, developed by Dr.Murray Bowen, to heighten the analysis of family relations. I argue that instilling the embodied hope of children is the result of successful parental strategies. Keywords: family …

The Depiction of Trauma in Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta and Watchmen
2020
Master´s thesis in English (EN500) This thesis will explore the depiction of trauma in Alan Moore’s graphic novels V for Vendetta and Watchmen . It aims to examine how something as unrepresentable as trauma can be portrayed using a balance of art and words in these two narratives. Writer Alan Moore and illustrators David Lloyd and Dave Gibbons have created alternative worlds with recognizable history and realistic characters who endure traumatic experiences that are presented using iconic language. I hope that my readers will gain a greater appreciation for this type of literature after understanding the potential it has in telling stories of importance and sensitivity surrounding trauma. I…
’Someone stole my story’ : Home and Trauma in Two Palestinian Novels
2018
Master's thesis English EN500 This thesis will examine representations of home and trauma in the Palestinian novels Mornings in Jenin (2008) by Susan Abulhawa and Salt Houses (2017) by Hala Alyan. Written by Palestinian refugees now living in the United States, each of the two novels follows a Palestinian family through four generations, and depicts the struggle of creating a sense of belonging away from home. This thesis will focus on the individual experience of home, and examine the ways in which traumatic memories hinder the various characters’ ability to create belonging in exile. Storytelling and the construction of narrative also serve an important function in the novels, and I will …

Narrating Environmental Citizenship. Norwegian picturebooks and comics in the Anthropocene
2023
In my project, I examine how aspects of “environmental citizenship” are discussed in Norwegian picturebooks and comics. The term “environmental citizenship” encompasses several concepts that originate from political sciences and discuss what it can mean to be a responsible, or “good”, citizen with regard to the environment. The concepts are characterised by various understandings of what citizenship means and which role the environment and its intrinsic value play. Common for the concepts is an argument for the need to change something in our behaviour towards the world we live in. An econarratological perspective: I examine seven multimodal texts in my dissertation, four picturebooks and t…
Fanget av fortid : tre traumefortellinger av Jon Fosse
2013
Author's version of an article in the journal: Edda. Nordisk tidsskrift for litteraturforskning. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/edda/2013/03/fanget_i_fortid_-_tre_traumefortellinger_av_jon_fosse Focusing on three narratives by Jon Fosse, Naustet (1989), Det er Ales (2004) and Olavs draumar (2012), I argue that a main theme in his work is a recurring concern with human responses to critical experiences of the past. Fosse’s characters often suffer from intrusive images and traumatic memories of shocking and disastrous events, thus being exposed to frequent re-enactments that impair their ability to live normal lives in the present. However, the narrative form is …
