Controlled Fault-Tolerant Power Converters for Power Quality Enhancement
2013
Power quality depends generally on the interaction of electrical power with electrical equipments. If electrical equipments operate correctly and reliably without being damaged or stressed, a suitable level of power quality is assured. On the other hand, if the electrical equipment malfunctions, is unreliable, or is damaged during normal usage, power quality is poor and probably the economical loss could be important like the technical one. In the scenario of the Distributed Generation, power quality issues will be moreover important because an higher dissemination of power conditioning equipment will be requested and this obviously increases the sources of vulnerability of the electrical s…
Influence of MV distribution networks structure on voltage dips propagation
2003
In this paper, transient behaviour due to voltage dips which occur in electric power MV distribution networks as a consequence of a fault by using an improved ATP circuit-breaker model are reported. The circuit-breaker is simulated by using a tool written in MODELS language and by arranging a time-variable differential arc-conductance based on the combination of Mayr's and Cassie's equations. An accurate analysis of the transient subsequent to circuit-breaker operation, in different fault conditions, are reported in order to show how the amplitude of the dip depends on the fault type, location and network structure.
Influence Of Lateral Load Distributions On Pushover Analysis Effectiveness
2008
The effectiveness of two simple load distributions for pushover analysis recently proposed by the authors is investigated through a comparative study, involving static and dynamic analyses of seismic response of eccentrically braced frames. It is shown that in the upper floors only multimodal pushover procedures provide results close to the dynamic profile, while the proposed load patterns are always conservative in the lower floors. They over-estimate the seismic response less than the uniform distribution, representing a reliable alternative to the uniform or more sophisticated adaptive procedures proposed by seismic codes. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.
Smart grid integrated green data centres as ancillary service providers
2015
In this paper a review of Green Data Centres facilities to support smart grids operation is proposed. The paper describes the ancillary services a Green Data Centre can provide both in terms of spinning reserve provision and different regulation services. In the application section, a real electrical grid hosting a data centre is considered. The infrastructure is owned by Engineering S.p.A. and is installed in northern Italy. The system has been considered as connected to the MV distribution grid in presence of other renewable energy sources. The impact of possible power management operations over the considered data centre has been studied by means of a simulation software and the spinning…
Environmental benefits through new distributed on site control actions inside European apartments
2008
Energy management control actions inside apartments and detached houses have to be carried out in order to reduce CO2 emissions. In this work, new control actions turned to the reduction of both electrical energy losses and electrical energy consumptions inside typical European (Italian, French, German and United Kingdom) apartments are proposed. These actions are of the ldquoLoad Shiftingrdquo type, that makes the apartment daily load profile as flat as possible, and of the ldquoDistributed on Site (DoS)rdquo type consisting in heating the water needed by dishwashers and washing machines inside instantaneous gas water heaters (IGWHs) instead of inside the household appliances themselves. T…
Impact of increasing penetration of photovoltaic (PV) systems on distribution feeders
2015
This paper investigates impact of increasing photovoltaic (PV) penetration on distribution feeders. The main focus of this work is on ‘how PV systems penetration can influence operation of the protective devices in the distribution feeder?’. PV systems' impact, in a distribution feeder, for 3Φ fault has been analyzed. It considers fault location and protective devices (PDs) settings (e.g. time of PDs operation before a fault gets cleared by it). This paper is also emphasizing on ‘how the penetration of PV can affect voltage quality / unbalance in the distribution feeder’. The considered distribution feeders are supplying residential network and therefore loading on different phases are goin…
Ubiquitous Co-Driver System and Its Effects on the Situation Awareness of the Driver
2008
The aim of this paper is to explore the effects of ubiquitous computing in cars on the situation awareness and expectations of the driver. In a driving simulation environment with participants using a co-driver system, we investigated how people took and recovered from misinformation provided by the system. The system presented safety-critical information about the upcoming curves on the road, but in the experiment part of the messages contained false information. The effects of this information on participants’ behavior were investigated. On the grounds of the experiment, we discuss two approaches for investigating drivers’ situational awareness, which are based on either mental workload o…
Load management for voltage security using probabilistic fuzzy decision tree method
2016
During contingency, load management is most important in planning, monitoring and controlling of power system. In transmission system, there is limit for controlling the reactive power in large size power network. In order to manage heavy loading on transmission, load management is necessary to avoid voltage collapse. This paper presents a methodology for load management considering voltage security assessment using probabilistic fuzzy decision tree (PFDT) technique. By using probabilistic fuzzy decision tree method, the load management is calculated in optimal manner in real time and insecure operating conditions are observed. With the help of this method, a real time load management plan …
Battery storage systems for peak load shaving applications: Part 1: Operating strategy and modification of the power diagram
2016
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) are gaining more and more attention in the current global energy landscape, thanks to some peculiar characteristics such as the versatility, modularity, scalability, fast response time, etc. BESSs can advantageously be used in the ancillary services market, in order to provide all the services necessary to ensure the stability and the reliability of the power system. Among other applications, BESS can also be used to shift electricity demand from on-peak to off-peak periods, also contributing to relieve peak demand charges, thus ensuring a saving for the customers. The BESS is charged when the electricity prices are the lowest (during the night) and di…
Risk Based Inspection Planning for Fatigue Damage in Offshore Steel Structures
2015
High fatigue reliability is one of the most important design criteria for welded offshore steel structures. Due to repeated wave loading fatigue cracks may initiate and grow in welded joints that are important for the integrity of these structures. The present paper presents the methodology and the practical calculations for risk based inspection planning for fatigue cracks in welded details. Due to the uncertainty in the variables involved in the problem the planning has to be carried out by stochastic modeling and risk based assessments. Scatter in potential crack growth has to be analyzed by applied probabilistic facture mechanics and the uncertainty in the performance of the actual insp…
