Can Signaling Theory Help Agency and Resource Scarcity Theories Explain Franchisee Failure? Predicting SBA-Backed Loan Defaults
2010
This study examines the use of analytic techniques to develop a model that predicts the potential default of Small Business Administration (SBA) backed loans issued to American franchisees. Data collected by World Franchising (WF) in their 2008 survey and by SBA from 2000-2008, covering 271 diverse US franchise chains, on the reported failure rates and charge off percentages of SBA backed loans was used to explore associations between franchisor characteristics and franchisee loan performances. The predictive capability of the derived model was assessed using a data mining technique in which the original data set is split into two different subsets: one for estimation and one for validation…
Financial incentive to prepay in fixed-rate mortgages
2004
The borrower's financial incentive to prepay is a crucial determinant in estimating prepayment in mortgage pools and, consequently, in valuing mortgage-backed securities. In mortgage prepayment literature, this incentive to prepay has been proxied by both the ratio of the loan rate to the refinancing rate and by the arithmetic spread between the two rates; however, the former is considered to be a better proxy of the refinancing incentive than the latter by a section of the literature. In this paper, the authors check the accuracy of that statement and subsequently estimate two prepayment functions using, alternatively, the two proxies. The results indicate that the use of the ratio does no…
Financing successful small business projects
2014
Purpose – The current credit rationing strongly influences the viability of SMEs innovation projects. In this context, the practice of screening borrowers by project success probability has become a paramount consideration for both lenders and firms. The aim of this paper is to test the screening role of loan contracts that consider collateral-interest margins simultaneously. Design/methodology/approach – This paper presents an empirical analysis that uses a unique data set composed of 323 bank loans granted by 28 banks to SMEs backed by a Spanish Mutual Guarantee Institution. Findings – The results show that appropriate combinations of collateral and interest rates can distinguish between…
CLUSTER IMPACT ON COMPANY CREDITWORTHINESS: CASE OF LATVIA
2013
One of the leading driving forces of every state economy is small and medium enterprises (SME). In Latvia, SME accounts for 99.7% of the national industrial system, creating 70% of the national’ value added. The lack of sufficient capital and credit is often a major problem for the development of SME, particularly in their early growth stages. The main criterion and quality indicator of credit risk assessment is the borrower’s creditworthiness. Before issuing a loan, the checking of the borrower’s credibility and solvency is carried out. The assessment of the borrowers’ ability to pay, their creditworthiness at a definite moment must be connected with the ability to meet their liabilities i…
The Housing Cycle: What Role for Mortgage Market Development and Housing Finance?
2019
AbstractWe use duration analysis to assess the impact of securitization, mortgage sector liberalization and government involvement in housing finance on the length of housing booms, busts and normal times in a panel of 20 OECD countries over the period 1970Q1-2015Q4. Our results reveal that a move towards a more liberalized mortgage sector is associated with longer housing booms, while an increase in securitization is linked with shorter housing busts. They also show that the length of housing booms and busts is particularly sensitive to housing finance characteristics, but that does not seem to be the case for normal times. Additionally, government support measures do not necessarily cushi…
Operating lease decision and the impact of capitalization in a bank-oriented country
2016
ABSTRACTThis article explores the reasons why firms engage in operating leases and examines the potential impact of a change in the related accounting rules. We focus on the accounting advantage of off-balance financing, which does not affect the typical accounting-based covenants especially important in bank-oriented countries. However, we also consider other economically based arguments. Using manually collected operating lease data for Spanish listed firms, we use the constructive capitalization method to measure as-if liabilities. The results confirm that not only size and industry affect the decision but that firms closer to breaching their covenants are also more inclined to choose op…
GOVERNANCE-BASED ACQUISITIONS AND RISK TAKING IN BANKING
2008
We examine the market for corporate control in banking when strategic acquisitions are driven by the different governance structures of commercial and savings banks. In contrast to profit-maximizing entities, we show that savings institutions can have acquisition incentives from their peculiar governance and ownership structure. Governance-based acquisition incentives, which interact with the specifics of the loan market in affecting bank risk taking, can arise when acquisitions take place sequentially or simultaneously, and also when financial intermediaries affect risk taking directly through the target return of investments or indirectly through the loan interest rate.
Monitoring and Market Power in Loan Markets
2000
Whether or not banks are engaged in ex ante monitoring of customers may have important consequences for the whole economy. We approach this question via a model in which banks can invest in either information acquisition or market power (product differentiation). The two alternatives generate different predictions, which are tested using panel data on Finnish local banks. We find evidence that banks’ investments in branch networks and human capital (personnel) contribute to information acquisition but not to market power. We also find that managing customers’ money transactions enhances banks ability to control their lending risks.
Financing public higher education in developing countries : the potential role of loan schemes
1986
The financing of education has emerged as a major topic of discussion among policy makers in recent years. There is evidence that in many developing countries, governments can no longer continue to increase spending on education at the high rates characteristic in the 1960s and 1970s. The macroeconomic environment has worsened, and there is keen intersectoral competition for public funds. Thus unless educational development moves away from its present heavy dependence on public funds, the expansion of education would be frustrated. One policy option is to increase the private financing of education. In this paper, we evaluate the potential effectiveness of loans schemes as a cost recovery i…
Notice of Retraction Managing banks' asset and loan portfolios
2011
Given the important role of the banking system in redistributing resources in the economy, a stable banking system is absolutely essential for sustainable development. This paper describes the dynamics of the volume and profitability of assets in Latvian banking system and develops a rating system to evaluate these indicators. After the empirical analysis, it discusses management strategies that Latvian commercial banks can follow to improve their quality of assets in the future.
