Purpose of Review Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is often perceived and described as underdiagnosed and undertreated, though effective treatment of FH is available. Heat shock proteins in three relatedDrosophila species belonging to theobscura group

The effect of heat shock on protein synthesis in three related Drosophila species belonging to the obscura group was analyzed on SDS-acrylamide gels. Four major heat shock proteins (hsps) were found in these species, in which synthesis reaches a maximum at 34 degrees C. Although the higher molecular weight proteins are conserved, differences in size were found for the small hsps in these species. By means of in situ hybridization using D. melanogaster probes for the small hsp genes, it was inferred that the small hsp genes of the obscura group species are clustered at the 27A locus in all three species.

The conditions were studied for the glycerophosphate oxidation by homogenate from locust flight muscle, and the O2-consumption was measured. Maximal oxidation rates were found with 0.087m glycerophosphate, 8 × 10−6m cytochromec, 7 × 10−6m DPN and pH 7.5. The production of dihydroxyacetone phosphate is followed by further oxidation steps, as could be shown by estimation of the different fractions of acid-soluble phosphate. Comparative studies were made on different insects and vertebrates. The rate of succinate oxidation by insect muscle was found to be ten times higher than that of vertebrate muscle. Locust: C++ software for simulation of RF detection

The Locust simulation package is a new C++ software tool developed to simulate the measurement of time-varying electromagnetic fields using RF detection techniques. Modularity and flexibility allow for arbitrary input signals, while concurrently supporting tight integration with physics-based simulations as input. External signals driven by the Kassiopeia particle tracking package are discussed, demonstrating conditional feedback between Locust and Kassiopeia during software execution. An application of the simulation to the Project 8 experiment is described. Locust is publicly available at https://github.com/project8/locust_mc.

Analysis of oscillations in discontinuous Lurie systems via LPRS method

We discuss advantages and limitations of the harmonic balance method and the locus of a perturbed relay system (LPRS) method in the problem of finding periodic oscillations. In this paper we present the results of using harmonic balance method and LPRS method while investigating a 3rd order dynamic system in Lurie form. In this system a symmetric periodic oscillation is found, while other two asymmetric periodic motions are not found using both methods.

New insights into black bodies

Planck's law describes the radiation of black bodies. The study of its properties is of special interest, as black bodies are a good description for the behavior of many phenomena. In this work a new mathematical study of Planck's law is performed and new properties of this old acquaintance are obtained. As a result, the exact form for the locus in a color-color diagrams has been deduced, and an analytical formula to determine with precision the black body temperature of an object from any pair of measurements has been developed. Three-dimensional level-curve scanning based on intersection of laser lines

A dimensional measurement system that also tracks object movements is presented here. The method directly yields the level curves of an object. It is an extension of collimation methods, coupled with the use of structured lighting with features formed from several luminous planes intersecting in a single line. This line defines a set of points of the space at a fixed distance Z 0 from the measuring head. Blenders near polynomial product maps of $\mathbb C^2$

In this paper we show that if $p$ is a polynomial which bifurcates then the product map $(z,w)\mapsto(p(z),q(w))$ can be approximated by polynomial skew products possessing special dynamical objets called blenders. Moreover, these objets can be chosen to be of two types : repelling or saddle. As a consequence, such product map belongs to the closure of the interior of two different sets : the bifurcation locus of $H_d(\mathbb P^2)$ and the set of endomorphisms having an attracting set of non-empty interior. In an independent part, we use perturbations of H\'enon maps to obtain examples of attracting sets with repelling points and also of quasi-attractors which are not attracting sets.

Genetic diversity within the R408W phenylketonuria mutation lineages in Europe

The R408W phenylketonuria mutation in Europe has arisen by recurrent mutation in the human phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) locus and is associated with two major PAH haplotypes. R408W-2.3 exhibits a west-to-east cline of relative frequency reaching its maximum in the Balto–Slavic region, while R408W-1.8 exhibits an east-to-west cline peaking in Connacht, the most westerly province of Ireland. Spatial autocorrelation analysis has demonstrated that the R408W-2.3 cline, like that of R408W-1.8, is consistent with a pattern likely to have been established by human dispersal.
