Long-Term Followup of Children with Colon Conduit Urinary Diversion and Ureterosigmoidostomy

1977

Sixty-four children underwent colon conduit urinary diversion because of a neurogenic bladder owing to myelomeningocele and 39 children required a ureterosigmoidostomy because of bladder exstrophy. The average length of followup was 4.6 years after colon conduit and 5.6 years after ureterosigmoidostomy. Colon conduit diversion was secondary in 3 children and ureterosigmoidostomy was secondary in 5. Of the children with a colon conduit 9.4% and of those with ureterosigmoidostomy 12.8% had postoperative surgical complications. Late surgical complications were encountered after colon conduit in 14.5% and after ureterosigmoidostomy in 20%. Of the children with normal renal function preoperative…

Impact of type and severity of postoperative complications on long‐term outcomes after colorectal liver metastases resection

2020

Background and objectives Postoperative complications (POCs) after hepatic resection for colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) adversely affect long-term survival. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of POC etiology and severity on overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Methods A retrospective study of 254 consecutive hepatectomies for CRLM was performed. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the effects of demographic, tumor-related and perioperative variables on OS and DFS. A 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) was then used to compare patients with different POC etiology: infective (Inf-POC), noninfective (Non-inf POC), and no-complicat…

Antibiotic Coating of the Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AMS 800): Is it Worthwhile?

2016

Objective To investigate the impact of the antibiotic coating InhibiZone on the infection and explantation rates of the AMS 800 in comparison to the AMS 800 without InhibiZone. Materials and Methods We retrospectively identified 305 patients with an AMS 800 in a multicenter cohort study. Patients were subsequently divided into InhibiZone and without InhibiZone-coated groups. Infection and explantation rates were analyzed by univariate and consecutively by multivariate logistic regression adjusted to variable risk factors. The infection-free interval was estimated by Kaplan-Meier plot and compared by the log-rank test. A P value below .05 was considered statistically significant. Results We …

A New Model of Skull Base Reconstruction following Expanded Endonasal or Transoral Approaches – Long-Term Results in Primates

2007

Objective: The direct endonasal or transoral transclival approaches to the skull base permit effective minimally invasive surgery along the clivus region. Developing consistently effective techniques to prevent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks and their consequences (infections and healing processes with long and complicated recoveries) remains a major challenge. In this study, we tested over a long period a method of bone reconstruction newly developed by us, which makes use of a specially designed elastic silicone plug that can be employed for bone replacement after minimally invasive skull base surgery without risk of postoperative CSF leaks. After acute testing of plug…

Long-Term Follow-Up of Children with Surgically Treated Vesicorenal Reflux: Renal Growth

1991

Renal growth after successful surgical correction of vesicoureterorenal reflux (VUR) in childhood was observed in 137 female and 22 male patients over a mean follow-up period of 10.5 years. The renal parenchymal area was determined using a compensatory planimeter. For each measured value, the standard deviation score (SDS) was calculated by comparison with a normal population. On average, renal growth after reflux operation nearly paralleled the expected normal growth rate. Scarred kidneys had a worse growth prognosis than refluxing renal units (RU) without renal damage, growth retardation being correlated with the degree of pyelonephritic changes. The diminished growth rate of scarred kidn…

Prognostic Value of White Blood Cell Count in Acute Myocardial Infarction: Long-Term Mortality

2005

Although traditionally an elevated white blood cell count (WBC), an indicator of systemic inflammation, has been accepted as part of the healing response following acute myocardial infarction (AMI), it has frequently been shown to be a predictor of adverse cardiovascular events. The present study was designed to assess the association between WBC and long-term mortality in AMI patients either with ST-segment elevation (STEMI) or without ST-segment elevation (non-STEMI). Patients and method. The study included 1118 consecutive patients who were admitted with the diagnosis of AMI: 569 non-STEMI and 549 STEMI. The WBC was measured in the 24 hours following admission. Patients were divided into…

Mid- to long-term results after bipolar radial head arthroplasty.

2009

Background Radial head arthroplasty is considered the treatment of choice for unreconstructable radial head fractures in the acute fracture situation. Although short-term results in the current literature are promising, replacement of the radial head remains controversial as long-term results are still missing. We report our 8.8-year results after treatment with a bipolar radial head prosthesis by Judet. Materials and methods In our department, 19 patients were treated with bipolar radial head arthroplasty between 1997 and 2001. Seventeen of these patients—14 men and 3 women—were examined retrospectively after 106 months (range, 78-139). Of these, 9 patients were treated primarily, 7 patien…

Ischemic stroke risk during long-term follow up in patients with successful catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation in Korea

2018

The interruption of oral anticoagulation therapy (OAC) after CA of atrial fibrillation (AF) is controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between successful long-term outcomes of catheter resection and SR maintenance and ischemic stroke risk in Korea. We studied 1,548 consecutive patients who were followed up for more than 2 years after CA of AF. We investigated the incidence of ischemic stroke during long-term follow-up. Compared to the AF recurrence group (n = 619), the sinus rhythm (SR) maintenance group (n = 929) had more paroxysmal AF (74.6% versus 44.4%, p<0.001), smaller LA size (39.9±5.7mm versus 42.3±6.0mm, p<0.001), and younger age (54.2±10.9 years v…

Long-Term Response to Cholinesterase Inhibitor Treatment Is Related to Functional MRI Response in Alzheimer's Disease.

2015

Background: Treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) with cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEI) enhances cholinergic activity and alleviates clinical symptoms. However, there is variation in the clinical response as well as system level changes revealed by functional MRI (fMRI) studies. Methods: We investigated 18 newly diagnosed mild AD patients with fMRI using a face recognition task after a single oral dose of rivastigmine, a single dose of placebo and 1-month treatment with rivastigmine. The clinical follow-up took place at 6 and 12 months. Results: MMSE score difference between bas…

Is Food Self-Sufficiency Conducive to Long-Term Growth? An Assessment of Malthus (1803) on the International Corn Trade.

2017

In this article, we have reconstructed Malthus’s views on growth and international corn trade in the second edition of his An Essay on the Principle of Population (1803) and shown their theoretical consistency with Malthus’s food self-sufficiency policy proposal advanced in Grounds of an Opinion on the Policy of Restricting the Importation of Foreign Corn ([1815] 1986b), the protectionist pamphlet that elicited Ricardo’s vehement reaction in “Essay on Profits.” Malthus’s (1803) main thesis was that the contemporary British unbalanced growth pattern was not viable. In order to avoid premature stagnation, he thought that Great Britain should both follow a pattern of balanced growth and pursue…
